LONDON — Britain’s Labour Party will return to government for the first time in
14 years after a landslide win in the general election. Speaking at a
celebratory event at the Tate Modern, Labour leader Keir Starmer declared,
“Change begins now.” Outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak acknowledged “a
difficult night” and said, “I take responsibility for the loss.”

HERE'S WHAT TO KNOW:

Labour has already surpassed the majority threshold to form a government. When
the counting is done, Labour is expected to have 405 seats to the Conservatives’
154. Liberal Democrats would be the third-largest party in the 650-seat
Parliament, with 56 seats.
In an election that was more about mood than policy, voters conveyed their
frustration with the Conservative Party and a willingness to give a chance to a
renewed Labour Party, purged of its hard-left elements and socialist rhetoric.
Friday will be a day of transition, with Sunak tending his resignation as prime
minister, and Starmer asking King Charles III for permission to form a
government.
