HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN PEOPLE ARE LEFT OUT? THE DISCARDED is a photographic odyssey through tossed, discarded, and lost face masks. These are remnants of the COVID-19 pandemic – paired with captions and quotes from people in prison. This is a project of empathy to humanize people left in the margins with the masks as a metaphor to cast light on the landscape of “The Discarded” — the people left as outsiders and not remembered. As the founder of the unPrison Project, I have stood face-to-face with more than 30,000 people in prisons across the United States. This includes incarcerated women, men, and youth. Furthermore, my work places me in sync with voices of people who society discards – the unremembered. In conclusion, THE DISCARDED is a collection of hundreds of pages of writing submitted from people in prisons around the country, and more than 1800 images of discarded face masks. These photos were taken across the U.S. — Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Texas, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Washington DC, Florida, and even a few from the Equator. The full collection will populate this site over time. The intention is to help raise voices that haven’t been heard. To help us all remember the unremembered. What do you feel about who is left out and left behind? Read Why The Discarded: A photo essay and collection created and compiled by Deborah Jiang-Stein. All writing is used with permissions. “We must wake up from the nightmare this world has scripted us in.” #quotefromprison #voices _ discarded My attitude and my addiction brought so much against myself and others?
