BETTER FUTURE We are enjoying a great start back at DPS! I always love the first days of a term…children running in, keen to reconnect with teachers and their mates…the sounds of laughter in the playground, and the creativity being unleashed in the classrooms. I’m looking forward to the mihi whakatau tomorrow…welcoming our new whānau, students and staff into the school. INTERESTING ARTICLE This article popped into my Twitter feed the other day…a good (short) read about the science around how children learn to persevere. In particular…it was the idea that what we do as adults has a big impact on how children acquire this type of resilience. The article features cognitive scientist Julia Leonard, who explores how children learn persistence and effort by observing adults. Her research suggests that when adults step in and complete tasks for children, it reduces their persistence. Instead, allowing children to struggle and praising effort can enhance their motivation. Economic and social factors also influence motivation. To sum up… For parents: * Encourage children by praising effort, not just results. * Allow children to solve problems independently…don’t leap in to help right away, and let children experience struggle For teachers: * Focus on intrinsic motivation over ‘grades’ (we don’t really do grades here…but this could be taken as test scores, or marked work) * Let students persist through challenges without taking over tasks. These points line up well with some of our decisions here at school where we try to put the ownership for learning onto the children. Think about the children in their Play or Maker times…they largely choose what they would like to do, and often work through things that ‘didn’t go right’. Our maths programme is based around the idea of providing a challenge, and empowering the children to work through it, and work with each other through it. The current changes in education are wanting a shift to more teacher-led instruction…and we do that well here also. We get great academic results, our structured literacy program is making a difference…and even in things like the Play and Maths…teachers are explicitly teaching the skills children need in order to progress. Some might frame it as a choice…do we want to develop ‘learners’ who are able to push through challenges, or do we want to develop children who ‘know stuff’? The answer is…we want both, and learning should be designed to develop both, and I’m proud that as a school we have that mentality. TERM 4 - A BUSY TIME AND A GOOD TIME Term 4 promises to be a great one for the children, they have lots of opportunities both inside and outside the school this term…summer sports, class trips, Tararua Challenge exchange, Disco (tonight!), photos, athletics, Grandparents Day, Beach Ed, visiting MIS…and lots more! HERO is our prime form of communication…some reminders go onto our Facebook page, but EVERYTHING is on HERO. On the app (or on the web) the ‘Community Feed’ is the place where the info goes…and at the top is a search bar. Search the name of the trip, the sport, the event…and the details will show! REMINDER: TEACHER ONLY DAY FRIDAY 25TH OCTOBER We are having a Teacher Only Day next week, Friday 25th October…so the school is closed for the day. Most of the local primary schools are also closing that day. Teachers have some online mahi to do around the new English and Maths Curriculums that are to be in place next year. There are webinars to introduce each area, and staff will be looking into what the new documents are like compared with our own progressions of learning we currently have. We will also be completing a webinar looking at the ‘Science of Learning’ as described by Dr Nina Hood from the Education Hub, and contrasting that with work by Professor Guy Claxton from the UK. These current changes are pretty massive, and as I’ve written about before…we want to take the good from them, but without giving up the things that make this school a special place. This means we need to have a deep understanding of the new curriculum, and the expectations in there, so we can weave these expectations into the great teaching that happens in classrooms daily at school. OUT OF ZONE APPLICATIONS - FOR TERMS 1 & 2 2025 Just a reminder…applications close this Friday (tomorrow). If you have a child turning 5 next year, and live out of zone…reach out to the office. Even if a sibling already attends DPS…you still need to do the paperwork! Feel free to pass the message on to whānau and friends that don’t attend DPS, but spaces are pretty limited. Flick a message to office@douglaspark.school.nz SCHOOL PHOTOS These will be taken on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd October. Order envelopes went home with the children on Tuesday, please check their bag if you haven’t seen it yet. Your order needs to be returned to school by Thursday 17th October, any late orders can be dropped in at Nikolaison’s at 117 Perry Street. Please ask/send any questions you may have directly to Pete Nikolaison at 06 370 3222 or email pete@pete.co.nz WRITING - COUNCILLORS HOCKEY WAIRARAPA NEEDS YOUR HELP!
