   A Reuters article from 15 days ago confirmed rumors that the Chinese military
   and specialized research institutions have been purchasing advanced
   semiconductors whose export to China is expressly prohibited by the US
   government. For the US and its allies, it is practically impossible to ensure
   that these advanced semiconductors are controlled under the prohibitions, as
   they are already arriving. However, the data we have suggests that they are
   landing with difficulty in quantities that presumably China needs to sustain
   the development of scientific research in the field of artificial
   intelligence (AI) and to guarantee innovation in the military sector. The US
   sanctions are effective in controlling the export of these goods and their
   distribution, but the Chinese giants of the Asian country can resort to
   parallel importation channels to obtain them. Singapore is one of the
   countries where NVIDIA has multiplied the number of products it has delivered
   to its clients in the last quarter of 2023 compared to 2022. The increase in
   sales is difficult to justify under the current situation, but, as we have
   seen, Singaporean companies are selling chips for AI applications that NVIDIA
   buys in China. Singapore is one of the countries exempted from US sanctions,
   differentiating it from South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. However, the
   organization led by Gina Raimondo has yet to take action against difficult
   Singaporean companies. Jensen Huang, NVIDIA's CEO, has pledged to respect US
   trading rules and negotiate minimally with the US Administration regarding
   the products that can be sold in China, which cannot be delivered to Chinese
   clients. Presumably, the US Department of Commerce will test whether NVIDIA
   and other companies can sell their products to countries that facilitate the
   entry of prohibited chips into China, as Singapore does, for a long time.


 * ALARM SOUNDS IN REDMOND: MICROSOFT CONFIRMS BREACH OF ITS SYSTEMS BY NOBELIUM
   
   Microsoft confirmed a breach of its systems by Nobelium (also known as
   Midnight Blizzard) on some corporate networks, including those belonging to
   senior leadership and legal teams, starting in late November 2023. The
   attackers gained access using compromised credentials and were able to access
   a small percentage of corporate email accounts, some documents, and emails.
   Microsoft stated that the attackers also exfiltrated some emails and
   documents. The attackers gained entry to Microsoft's systems after they had
   already gained access to a test account, but it is unclear whether other
   emails or documents were stolen during the process. Microsoft discovered the
   attack around January 12, 2024, but did not reveal how long the attackers had
   access to the systems. Curiously, the attack occurred only a few days after
   Microsoft announced its plans to review the security of its software
   following several major attacks on Azure. Microsoft's statements leave
   clients uncertain if there was another vulnerability, besides the SolarWinds
   breach. Microsoft has been focusing on security in software design,
   construction, testing, and operation with its Secure Future Initiative. This
   shift in focus on security in software design is unprecedented in the
   industry and goes back to 2004 when Microsoft announced its Security
   Development Lifecycle (SDL) in response to major security falls in Windows
   XP.


 * JAXA'S SUCCESSFUL LUNAR MISSION: SLIM LANDING ON THE MOON
   
   Japan's space agency, JAXA, announced successful landing of the SLIM
   (SmartLanderInvestigatingMoon) spacecraft on the Moon. However, the
   spacecraft, which cost 121 million dollars and was launched with the XRISM
   observatory in September, is not generating electricity yet due to its
   orientation. The Japanese have officially become the fifth country in the
   world to reach the Moon. Before the lunar landing, the spacecraft released
   two small robots, named Lunar Excursion Vehicles (LEV), to capture images of
   the lunar surface. SLIM was designed to function in low power mode and is
   expected to operate in the area near a 270-meter crater called Shioli, in the
   Mare Nectaris region of the Moon.


 * THE FUTURE OF SPACE FOOD: GRILLS AND INSECTS
   
   In space travel, survival is a challenge. Astronauts have faced numerous
   complications, from radiation in microgravity to the lack of fresh produce.
   To ensure a sustainable future in space, researchers from the University of
   Australia and the French Space Agency are exploring unconventional food
   sources like grills and insects. In 2021, NASA and the CSA announced the Deep
   Space Food Challenge, a public competition to develop technologies for
   producing food in space as efficiently as on Earth. The challenge, dubbed
