MARS EXPLORATION ROVER

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Mission (MER) is an ongoing robotic space mission
involving two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, exploring the planet Mars. It
began in 2003 with the sending of the two rovers—MER-A Spirit and MER-B
Opportunity—to explore the Martian surface and geology.

The mission's scientific objective was to search for and characterize a wide
range of rocks and soils that hold clues to past water activity on Mars. The
mission is part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, which includes three
previous successful landers: the two Viking program landers in 1976 and Mars
Pathfinder probe in 1997.

The total cost of building, launching, landing and operating the rovers on the
surface for the initial 90-sol primary mission was US$820 million. Since the
rovers have continued to function beyond their initial 90 sol primary mission,
they have each received five mission extensions. The fifth mission extension was
granted in October 2007, and ran to the end of 2009. The total cost of the first
four mission extensions was $104 million, and the fifth mission extension is
expected to cost at least $20 million.

EXPLORATION OF MARS

The exploration of Mars is the study of Mars by spacecraft. Probes sent from
Earth, beginning in the late 20th century, have yielded a dramatic increase in
knowledge about the Martian system, focused primarily on understanding its
geology and habitability potential.

CURRENT STATUS

Engineering interplanetary journeys is very complicated, so the exploration of
Mars has experienced a high failure rate, especially in earlier attempts.
Roughly two-thirds of all spacecraft destined for Mars failed before completing
their missions, and there are some that failed before their observations could
begin. However, missions have also met with unexpected levels of success, such
as the twin Mars Exploration Rovers operating for years beyond their original
mission specifications.

As of 24 September 2014, two scientific rovers were on the surface of Mars
beaming signals back to Earth (Opportunity of the Mars Exploration Rover
mission, and Curiosity of the Mars Science Laboratory mission), with five
orbiters currently surveying the planet: Mars Odyssey; Mars Express; Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter; Mars Orbiter Mission; and MAVEN.

Mars, active from 2004 to 2010. It was one of two rovers of NASA's ongoing Mars
Exploration Rover Mission. It landed successfully on Mars at 04:35 Ground UTC on
January 4, 2004, three weeks before its twin, Opportunity (MER-B), landed on the
other side of the planet. Its name was chosen through a NASA-sponsored student
essay competition. The rover became stuck in late 2009, and its last
communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010. The rover completed its
planned 90-sol mission. Aided by cleaning events that resulted in higher power
from its solar panels, Spirit went on to function effectively over twenty times
longer than NASA planners expected following mission completion. Spirit also
logged 7.73 km (4.8 mi) of driving instead of the planned 600 m (0.4 mi),
allowing more extensive geological analysis of Martian rocks and planetary
surface features. Initial scientific results from the first phase of the mission
(the 90-sol prime mission) were published in a special issue of the journal
Science. On May 1, 2009 (5 years, 3 months, 27 Earth days after landing; 21.6
times the planned mission duration), Spirit became stuck in soft soil. This was
not the first of the mission's "embedding events" and for the following eight
months NASA carefully analyzed the situation, running Earth-based theoretical
and practical simulations, and finally programming the rover to make extrication
drives in an attempt to free itself. These efforts continued until January 26,
2010 when NASA officials announced that the rover was likely irrecoverably
obstructed by its location in soft soil, though it continued to perform
scientific research from its current location. The rover continued in a
stationary science platform role until communication with Spirit stopped on sol
2210 (March 22, 2010). JPL continued to attempt to regain contact until May 24,
2011, when NASA announced that efforts to communicate with the unresponsive
rover had ended. A formal farewell was planned at NASA headquarters after the
Memorial Day holiday and was televised on NASA TV. Hope you enjoyed it!

Mars in 4K - The Ultimate Edition. The best images of Mars in stunning 4k 60fps.
"Mars in 4K: The Ultimate Edition" presents an unprecedented visual exploration
of Mars, enriched by the groundbreaking missions of NASA's Mars rovers. This
video, with its stunning 4K resolution, offers a journey across the Martian
landscape, revealing the planet's beauty and scientific wonders.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few years ago I threw together some Mars images and rendered them in 4k. Back
then, I had little editing knowledge. The video went on to get over 60 Million
views. It was something that hadn't been done before, and was a case of the
right place at the right time. I'm not expecting this video to come close to the
view count of the original, but I just wanted to do it justice and give you all
something nice to watch. Thank you all so much for your support over the years,
and thanks to our patrons for your contributions to the channel. - ElderFox
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The footage, captured directly by NASA's Mars rovers - Spirit, Opportunity,
Curiosity, and Perseverance - unveils the red planet's intricate details. These
rovers, acting as robotic geologists, have traversed varied terrains, from
ancient lake beds to towering mountains, uncovering Mars' complex geological
history. As viewers enjoy these images, they will notice informal place names
assigned by NASA's team, providing context to the Martian features observed.
Each rover's unique journey is highlighted, showcasing their contributions to
Martian exploration. Spirit and Opportunity, the trailblazers, revealed the
first conclusive evidence of water on Mars, forever changing our understanding
of the planet. The Curiosity rover, a mobile laboratory, has been climbing Mount
Sharp for over a decade, unveiling layers of Martian history and providing
insights into the planet's climatic changes. Perseverance, the latest rover,
accompanied by the Ingenuity helicopter, explores Jezero Crater, an ancient
lakebed. This duo represents the pinnacle of Mars exploration technology, with
Ingenuity serving as the first aircraft to fly on another planet, scouting and
capturing breathtaking aerial images. The video also delves into the scientific
achievements of these missions. Discoveries of past water systems on Mars lead
to the tantalizing question of past life on the planet. Each rover's journey,
such as Opportunity's 28-mile trek, is a testament to human ingenuity and the
relentless pursuit of knowledge. As viewers immerse themselves in this Martian
experience, they are reminded of the significance of these moments in cosmic
history. The video encourages viewers to appreciate the monumental strides made
in understanding our celestial neighbor and to share this awe-inspiring journey
with others. Finally, the video invites viewers to delve deeper into the ongoing
saga of the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity helicopter, encouraging exploration
of the full journey these incredible machines have embarked upon on the Martian
surface.

Exploration of the Red Planet @ amazon.com
   http://www.amazon.com/Roving-Mars-Spirit-Opportunity-Exploration/dp/B003XU7W0A
From Wiki : Spirit, MER-A (Mars Exploration Rover -- A), is a robotic rover
on Mars, active from 2004 to 2010. It was one of two rovers of NASA's ongoing
Mars Exploration Rover Mission. It landed successfully on Mars at 04:35
Ground UTC on January 4, 2004, three weeks before its twin, Opportunity
(MER-B), landed on the other side of the planet. Its name was chosen through
a NASA-sponsored student essay competition. The rover became stuck in late
2009, and its last communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010. The
rover completed its planned 90-sol mission. Aided by cleaning events that
resulted in higher power from its solar panels, Spirit went on to function
effectively over twenty times longer than NASA planners expected following
mission completion. Spirit also logged 7.73 km (4.8 mi) of driving instead of
the planned 600 m (0.4 mi), allowing more extensive geological analysis of
Martian rocks and planetary surface features. Initial scientific results from
the first phase of the mission (the 90-sol prime mission) were published in a
special issue of the journal Science. On May 1, 2009 (5 years, 3 months, 27
Earth days after landing; 21.6 times the planned mission duration), Spirit
became stuck in soft soil. This was not the first of the mission's "embedding
events" and for the following eight months NASA carefully analyzed the
situation, running Earth-based theoretical and practical simulations, and
finally programming the rover to make extrication drives in an attempt to
free itself. These efforts continued until January 26, 2010 when NASA
officials announced that the rover was likely irrecoverably obstructed by its
location in soft soil, though it continued to perform scientific research
from its current location. The rover continued in a stationary science
platform role until communication with Spirit stopped on sol 2210 (March 22,
2010). JPL continued to attempt to regain contact until May 24, 2011, when
NASA announced that efforts to communicate with the unresponsive rover had
ended. A formal farewell was planned at NASA headquarters after the Memorial
Day holiday and was televised on NASA TV. Hope you enjoyed it!

Summary: The Mars2020 Perseverance Rover took about 8 years to complete here
on Earth. Built at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena,
California. Then it was shipped to Kennedy Space Center in Florida where it
was launched. It took 7 months to get to Mars. Parts of the spacecraft
include Cruise Stage, Backshell, Descent Stage, Perseverance, and the Heat
Shield. Getting to the Surface of Mars is called EDL - Entry, Descent, and
Landing. This must happen autonomously. The main purpose of the rover is to
search for signs of life. Scientific instruments include SuperCam, MastCam-Z,
MEDA, SHERLOC, WATSON, PIXL, MOXIE, and RIMFAX. The rover also brought along
a helicopter called Ingenuity. This is the first helicopter to fly on another
   planet! ⌚Timestamps: 00:00-Intro 00:56-Previous Mars Rovers 01:34-Built on

Mars in 4K - The Ultimate Edition. The best images of Mars in stunning 4k
60fps. "Mars in 4K: The Ultimate Edition" presents an unprecedented visual
exploration of Mars, enriched by the groundbreaking missions of NASA's Mars
rovers. This video, with its stunning 4K resolution, offers a journey across
the Martian landscape, revealing the planet's beauty and scientific wonders.
   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few years ago I threw together some Mars images and rendered them in 4k.
Back then, I had little editing knowledge. The video went on to get over 60
Million views. It was something that hadn't been done before, and was a case
of the right place at the right time. I'm not expecting this video to come
close to the view count of the original, but I just wanted to do it justice
and give you all something nice to watch. Thank you all so much for your
support over the years, and thanks to our patrons for your contributions to
   the channel. - ElderFox
   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The footage, captured directly by NASA's Mars rovers - Spirit, Opportunity,
Curiosity, and Perseverance - unveils the red planet's intricate details.
These rovers, acting as robotic geologists, have traversed varied terrains,
from ancient lake beds to towering mountains, uncovering Mars' complex
geological history. As viewers enjoy these images, they will notice informal
place names assigned by NASA's team, providing context to the Martian
features observed. Each rover's unique journey is highlighted, showcasing
their contributions to Martian exploration. Spirit and Opportunity, the
trailblazers, revealed the first conclusive evidence of water on Mars,
forever changing our understanding of the planet. The Curiosity rover, a
mobile laboratory, has been climbing Mount Sharp for over a decade, unveiling
layers of Martian history and providing insights into the planet's climatic
changes. Perseverance, the latest rover, accompanied by the Ingenuity
helicopter, explores Jezero Crater, an ancient lakebed. This duo represents
the pinnacle of Mars exploration technology, with Ingenuity serving as the
first aircraft to fly on another planet, scouting and capturing breathtaking
aerial images. The video also delves into the scientific achievements of
these missions. Discoveries of past water systems on Mars lead to the
tantalizing question of past life on the planet. Each rover's journey, such
as Opportunity's 28-mile trek, is a testament to human ingenuity and the
relentless pursuit of knowledge. As viewers immerse themselves in this
Martian experience, they are reminded of the significance of these moments in
cosmic history. The video encourages viewers to appreciate the monumental
strides made in understanding our celestial neighbor and to share this
awe-inspiring journey with others. Finally, the video invites viewers to
delve deeper into the ongoing saga of the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity
helicopter, encouraging exploration of the full journey these incredible
machines have embarked upon on the Martian surface.

Roving-Mars-Spirit-Opportunity-Exploration/ dp/ B003XU7W0A From Wiki : Spirit,
MER-A (Mars Exploration Rover -- A), is a robotic rover on Mars, active from
2004 to 2010. It was one of two rovers of NASA's ongoing Mars Exploration
Rover Mission. It landed successfully on Mars at 04:35 Ground UTC on
January 4, 2004, three weeks before its twin, Opportunity (MER-B), landed
on the other side of the planet. Its name was chosen through a NASA-sponsored
student essay competition. The rover became stuck in late 2009, and its
last communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010. The rover
completed its planned 90-sol mission. Aided by cleaning events that
resulted in higher power from its solar panels, Spirit went on to function
effectively over twenty times longer than NASA planners expected
following mission completion. Spirit also logged 7.73 km (4.8 mi) of
driving instead of the planned 600 m (0.4 mi), allowing more extensive
geological analysis of Martian rocks and planetary surface features.
Initial scientific results from the first phase of the mission (the 90-sol
prime mission) were published in a special issue of the journal Science. On
May 1, 2009 (5 years, 3 months, 27 Earth days after landing; 21.6 times the
planned mission duration), Spirit became stuck in soft soil. This was not
the first of the mission's "embedding events" and for the following eight
months NASA carefully analyzed the situation, running Earth-based
theoretical and practical simulations, and finally programming the
rover to make extrication drives in an attempt to free itself. These
efforts continued until January 26, 2010 when NASA officials announced
that the rover was likely irrecoverably obstructed by its location in
soft soil, though it continued to perform scientific research from its
current location. The rover continued in a stationary science platform
role until communication with Spirit stopped on sol 2210 (March 22, 2010).
JPL continued to attempt to regain contact until May 24, 2011, when NASA
announced that efforts to communicate with the unresponsive rover had
ended. A formal farewell was planned at NASA headquarters after the
Memorial Day holiday and was televised on NASA TV. Hope you enjoyed it!

Perseverance Rover took about 8 years to complete here on Earth. Built at
the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. Then it
was shipped to Kennedy Space Center in Florida where it was launched. It took
7 months to get to Mars. Parts of the spacecraft include Cruise Stage,
Backshell, Descent Stage, Perseverance, and the Heat Shield. Getting to
the Surface of Mars is called EDL - Entry, Descent, and Landing. This must
happen autonomously. The main purpose of the rover is to search for signs of
life. Scientific instruments include SuperCam, MastCam-Z, MEDA,
SHERLOC, WATSON, PIXL, MOXIE, and RIMFAX. The rover also brought along a
helicopter called Ingenuity. This is the first helicopter to fly on
another planet! ⌚Timestamps: 00:00-Intro 00:56-Previous Mars Rovers

Mars in 4K - The Ultimate Edition. The best images of Mars in stunning 4k
60fps. "Mars in 4K: The Ultimate Edition" presents an unprecedented
visual exploration of Mars, enriched by the groundbreaking missions of
NASA's Mars rovers. This video, with its stunning 4K resolution, offers a
journey across the Martian landscape, revealing the planet's beauty and
scientific wonders.
- ElderFox
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The footage, captured directly by NASA's Mars rovers - Spirit,
Opportunity, Curiosity, and Perseverance - unveils the red planet's
intricate details. These rovers, acting as robotic geologists, have
traversed varied terrains, from ancient lake beds to towering mountains,
uncovering Mars' complex geological history. As viewers enjoy these
images, they will notice informal place names assigned by NASA's team,
providing context to the Martian features observed. Each rover's unique
journey is highlighted, showcasing their contributions to Martian
exploration. Spirit and Opportunity, the trailblazers, revealed the
first conclusive evidence of water on Mars, forever changing our
understanding of the planet. The Curiosity rover, a mobile
laboratory, has been climbing Mount Sharp for over a decade, unveiling
layers of Martian history and providing insights into the planet's
climatic changes. Perseverance, the latest rover, accompanied by the
Ingenuity helicopter, explores Jezero Crater, an ancient lakebed. This
duo represents the pinnacle of Mars exploration technology, with
Ingenuity serving as the first aircraft to fly on another planet,
scouting and capturing breathtaking aerial images. The video also delves
into the scientific achievements of these missions. Discoveries of past
water systems on Mars lead to the tantalizing question of past life on the
planet. Each rover's journey, such as Opportunity's 28-mile trek, is a
testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.
As viewers immerse themselves in this Martian experience, they are
reminded of the significance of these moments in cosmic history. The
video encourages viewers to appreciate the monumental strides made in
understanding our celestial neighbor and to share this awe-inspiring
journey with others. Finally, the video invites viewers to delve deeper
into the ongoing saga of the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity
helicopter, encouraging exploration of the full journey these
incredible machines have embarked upon on the Martian surface.
