SHOPPERS ARE BOYCOTTING KROGER AFTER ‘ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS’ SELF-CHECKOUT LINE
CLAIMING THEY DON’T WORK FOR FREE

Self-checkout has ruffled the features of many shoppers

AS we move into the digital age, consumers across the nation are forced to
follow.

Technology has wormed its way into nearly every sector with grocery stores now
getting in the game.

Some of the biggest retailers across the country have started implementing
self-checkout: Walmart, Target, Aldi, and more.

While the move was supposed to be speedier, not all shoppers would agree.

In fact, one Kroger shopper took to X complaining of long lines as employees
just stood to the side.

“This self-checkout line is absolutely ridiculous and they only have 2 registers
with cashiers opened. All the lines are to the back of the store," they said.

Another commented on the post agreeing with the sentiment but adding: “I didn’t

CHECKING OUT

The two shoppers are hitting on an issue many retailers and grocery stores have
been seeing over the past couple of months.

Customers have been calling out stores for what they feel is forced, free labor.

Many times, shoppers will be waiting in long lines for a self-checkout machine
while they notice employees facilitating the lines or doing other things.

While the employees may actually be busy with other things, to the customer, it
looks as if they aren’t.

The shoppers see multiple employees seemingly standing around the store as there
are traditional checkout lines empty.

Additionally, shoppers have complained that the convenience factor is disrupted
as they still need employees' help.

For example, one Redditor said: “Self-checkouts are almost never
self-checkouts.”

“They’re glitchy … the scales in them often cause disruptions in the process,
[and] if you buy alcohol, OTC meds, etc., you need someone to help you," they
added.

Others have noticed that shoppers ringing up a larger number of items are more
likely to experience the glitches.

This will also mean an employee will need to override the machine or ask for an
ID check, slowing down the process.

NUMBERS MAY LIE

Despite the customers who complain of inconvenience, a study by VideoMining
found that grocery shoppers in the US are more likely to use a self-checkout
machine than a cashier.

It also showed that transactions on self-checkout machines were recorded at 55%
for all grocery sales.

This was up from the 48% that was recorded back in 2021.

Kroger isn't the only store to make the self-checkout switch.

Retailers like Lowe's, The Home Depot, and more have also added multiple lanes
to stores across the country.

Shoppers are also blasting Kroger’s "pointless" delivery process saying it has
none of their requests or "any substitutions."

Plus, Walmart customers are outraged over the store’s new coupon crackdown.
