Regarding NFTs, there's nothing that stops another business from starting a
blockchain and 'sell' their NFTs of the same stars the other business already
'sold'. Until there is legal recourse it's just paying for storing a bit of data
that doesn't actually mean anything. Nice vid Ziz

I can definitely understand the excuse, "I work so much! I just want to be able
to enjoy the game." But the thing is, having been in that exact situation where
I had more money in time, I still had fun playing when I could. The solution
there is to work to making it so people can work for a living without having to
work themselves to death, not ruin what little free time we all have and stretch
what little money we have even more.

Honestly hate pay to win. This is probably one fo the best videos i've ever seen
on the topic. I'm in the same boat as you; cosmetic only MTX in a completely f2P
game is ideal, but greed typically wins out in those. I play games with some p2w
features, but my favorites have always been the farer ones.

To be honest for me the path of exile way of monetising works. I was happy to
pay for stash tabs after my first 40 hours of gameplay as I felt I wanted to pay
to the Devs for my experience. Later as I kept falling for the game more I was
happy to support the devs while I enjoyed the game. I still really love POE and
am always on a lookout for some nice MTX but I never feel like I have to.

Thank you for calling out the dangers of gambling!! It's so, so easy to spend
$10-$25 at a time and then after a year or two you've spent hundreds or
thousands of dollars, mostly for crap. On top of that, your comment of "making a
problem and then selling the solution" is such an easy metric for bad quality of
life. No game needs to use that system to make money.

So the part at 14:16, the problem is that the people that work long hours end up
comparing their progress to that of someone that plays the game for a living.
You watch people get a Headhunter in the first week of a new PoE league, but you
could never even hope to accomplish that. That actually creates a weird
situation for the developer. And it's also stigmatized as the "hardcore" VS the
"casuals."

Game development used to come from a place of passion. It now comes from a place
of revenue and maximizing profits. The CEO's of alot of new gaming companies
doesnt even care about the product, just numbers go up brrrr.

I totally agree with you. Everyone should have the same chances and pay to win
is a horrible idea that destroys many multiplayer games. And the whole NFT
concept has nothing to do with gaming. There is and should not be a place for
that in games.

Good video, I agree with you on all points. PoE is monetized in perhaps the best
way as cosmetics are the least predatory way of doing free to play games. Even
the things that aren't cosmetic, you rightfully pointed out that there's only so
many stash tabs and the difference between $0 in stash tabs and $40 in stash
tabs is like game transformational in importance and there's no ongoing
commitment to buy stash tabs. The worst games are the ones that not only sell a
way to get ahead but are set up such that it becomes a contest to see who can
spend the most real money. Worse even, some games are structured such that if
you quit you lose everything (e.g. sandbox style games where nowhere is safe).
This evokes feelings of sunk cost and traps people in a really terrible
situation.

Appreciate your take on this, Ziz. For the most part, I agree with you, that I
don't want to play a game that is designed to be bad. More importantly, I don't
want to play a game where other people have an advantage that I don't know
about. I haven't seen a game where there is enough transparency in what
advantages other people have paid for to help me appreciate whether that fact
alone bothers me. But as of right now, I can only chalk it up to a lack of
transparency. What I perceive as a skill gap for myself is actually just them
spending $10 and I don't know about it? Screw that mechanic. The other thing I
would emphasize, which I feel like you touched on but deserves more
highlighting, is that these mechanics are easy to think up and probably easy to
develop, so studios are left with complacency and no need to innovate. I look
forward to the studio who reinvigorates innovation in gaming, and we get a bunch
of new mechanics that were really hard to think up but that people love and will
gladly pay for.

you could just buy a finished product instead of a license to a half-finished
game with additional (necessary) purchases down the road.

Thnaks for the honest rant Ziz. I've been playing EVE online as my main game
that I spend USD on. It is heavily monetized- monthly subscriptions, the
developer essentially sells in game currency and you can buy skill progression
from the market. Yet, there is no way to win the game, and so the perception of
wealth is tempered by realistic self-set goals. To be sure there is never
enough, but that is because there is no end. not because you are trying to get
there quicker.

I started playing poe like 4 years ago when I first moved to france for uni, up
until then I was an avid twitch/yt watcher, but these recent years ziz and
mathil just skyrocketed in my book not only because of poe but also because of
their personnalities, great take ziz we would love to see more of this content
