Scientists are now teaming up with charter fishing boat operators in the summer
of 2021 to collect certain parts of the salmon caught by the anglers aboard. The
heads, stomachs, and eggs of Chinook salmon that have been feeding in the ocean
off the California Coast can help researchers understand what is causing
thiamine deficiency, and what might help remedy or mitigate its effects.

A tool for natural resource managers, BLOBTRACKER is a program that
automatically analyzes sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTa) from
1984-present, looking for the presence of significant BLOB-class events. Sea
surface temperature (SST) data were obtained from a variety of different
platforms (satellites, ships, buoys) on a regular global grid at a resolution of
1°.

Data from ocean color satellites has led to the discovery that chlorophyll
blooms consistently develop in the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre
(NPSG) in late summer. Both the timing and location of these blooms are
enigmatic. There is on-going research at ERD to try to understand what causes
these blooms.
