There has been a "large-scale" data breach on a private national health
provider, Sky News Australia can reveal.

Sky News Chief News Anchor Kieran Gilbert on Thursday said he has been told by
government sources that a "medium-sized" health provider had been impacted by a
data breach.

"Sky News can reveal there's been another nationally significant data breach,"
he said.

"Government sources have told me this breach has impacted a medium-sized health
provider.

"Now it's not the public health system or public hospitals we're taking about,
but a provider within the health system."

It is understood the scope and severity of the breach was not to the extent of
attacks which have previously impacted Optus or Medibank.

National Cyber Security Coordinator Lieutenant General Michelle McGuinness has
described the attack on the organisation as a "large-scale ransomware data
breach".

"Yesterday afternoon I was advised by a commercial health information
organisation that it was the victim of a large-scale ransomware data breach
incident," Lieutenant McGuinness said in a statement to Sky News.

"I am working with agencies across the Australian government, states and
territories to coordinate a whole-of-government response to this incident."

Lieutenant McGuinness said the Australian Signals Directorate's Australian Cyber
Security Centre is aware of the breach, and Australian Federal Police are
investigating.

"We are in the very preliminary stages of our response and there is limited
detail to share at this stage," she said.

"I will continue to provide updates as we progress."

Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil said she had been briefed about incident in
recent days and the government convened a National Coordination Mechanism on
Thursday.

"The @AUCyberSecCoord, Michelle McGuinness, is leading work across the
Australian government to support the company in managing this large-scale
ransomware incident," Ms O'Neil wrote on X.

"Updates will be provided in due course. Speculation at this stage risks
undermining significant work underway to support the company’s response."

Speaking to Sky News on Wednesday, shadow home affairs and cyber security
minister James Paterson said the data breach is "yet another reminder of the
very dangerous cyber threat environment that we live in".

"The health sector is a major target for both criminal and state-backed actors,"
the Senator said.

"Criminal actors like to use it for ransomware because the health sector is
often vulnerable to those targets and sometimes they do pay, and nation
state-backed actors use it as an opportunity to gather intelligence and
information about us.

"But also, as we've seen reported in the media in recent weeks, they are seeking
to establish dormant presences on significant networks, critical infrastructure
networks, and the health system is included in that."

Senator Paterson stressed breaches of health-related data can be concerning for
people given the sensitivity of the information.

"It's some of the most personally and privately significant information that
exists about a person, the medical treatment that you're receiving, the medicine
that you might be using, your private health insurance details," he said.

"This is very distressing for Australians when it is released publicly."

In late 2022, about 9.7 million customers were impacted by a major cyber attack
on Medibank, which saw people's names, dates of birth and other sensitive
private health information leaked online.

Optus was hit by a separate data hack that same year which exposed the personal
information of millions of customers, including passport and driver's licences
numbers, and Medicare cards.
