Russia-Ukraine War
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is planning an India trip in near future,
eyeing to maintain momentum in ties with India that has taken a neutral and
balanced approach on the Ukraine crisis.

Lavrov who has made few trips abroad since Russia invaded Ukraine or what they
describe as special military operations in Ukraine on February 24 could travel
to India in near future, ET has learnt.

If the trip materialises, Lavrov is expected to debrief India on Russia's
Ukraine operations and peace talks with Ukraine, India will call for early
cessation of hostilities and push for dialogue and diplomacy to end the impasse,
ET has further learnt. While India has been abstaining from all West sponsored
resolutions in the UN on the Ukraine conflict, it has highlighted the need for
upholding UN charter and matters of territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The agenda of Lavrov's proposed visit could also include proposals on banking
mechanisms and trading arrangements that have been hit by sweeping Western
sanctions. India is seeking to revive the Rupee-Rouble arrangement and the
Indian banking sector is in talks for alternative mechanisms for trade with
Russia.

Indian oil companies have also purchased Russian oil at discounted prices to
meet domestic demands amid rising global crude prices. The Modi government has
expressed its displeasure over double standards displayed by the West which has
pressurised India to stop purchasing Russian crude while making huge energy
imports from Moscow themselves.

Lavrov could also call on NSA besides his scheduled meeting with Foreign
Minister S Jaishankar during the proposed visit. In 2021, Lavrov travelled twice
to India and met Jaishankar four times altogether across various capitals
including in Moscow. The two last spoke on February 24.

It may be recalled that PM Narendra Modi is among the very few world leaders who
have been in touch with Russian President Vladimir Putin and spoke to him thrice
since February 24 with suggestions for dialogue and diplomacy at the earliest to
end the conflict.

India has been hosting a series of Foreign Ministers over the last two weeks and
this includes the recently concluded trip of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Besides Foreign Ministers from Greece and Austria too visited New Delhi and UK
Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss is expected here on March 30-31.
