MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

A five-step action plan to offer initial help to anyone showing signs of mental
health distress.

 * Would you know how to respond if someone confided in you that they were
living with a mental health condition?
 * Do you know how to recognize the signs and symptoms of a mental illness?
 * Perhaps they are having an episode of depression or in the midst of a panic
   attack?
 * Would you know how to guide or support your loved one or friend if he or she
   was heavily misusing substances?
 * Do you have the tools to assist yourself or someone in need?

Individuals trained in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) grow their knowledge of
the signs, symptoms and risk factors of behavioral and mental health conditions
and addictions. Peer-reviewed studies show that the program reduces the social
distance created by negative attitudes and perceptions of individuals with
mental illnesses.

We envision a community in which MHFA is as common as CPR. Just as CPR training
helps a person with no clinical training assist an individual following a heart
attack, MHFA training allows helping someone experiencing a mental health crisis
such as contemplating suicide. In both situations, the goal is to support an
individual until appropriate professional help arrives.

Sign up for MHFA training today. Upon completion of the training, participants
receive a certificate valid for three years.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

What types of topics are covered?

The program discusses depression, mood, anxiety and substance abuse disorders,
as well as trauma and psychosis. Trainees are taught how to apply the 5-step
action plan in a variety of situations such as helping someone through a panic
attack, engaging with someone who may be suicidal or assisting an individual who
has overdosed. An important component of the MHFA course is the opportunity to
practice the intervention strategy rather than just learning about it. This
simple experience can make it easier to apply the knowledge in a real-life
situation.

Where did MHFA start?

Mental Health First Aid was created in Australia in 2001 by Betty Kitchener, a
nurse specializing in health education, and Tony Jorm, a respected mental health
literacy professor.

Is there evidence to support the effectiveness of the program?

Yes. Peer reviewed studies from Australia and across the globe show that the
program saves lives, improves the mental health of the individual administering
care and the one receiving it, expands knowledge of mental illnesses and their
treatments, increases the services provided and reduces overall social distance
toward individuals with mental illnesses by improving mental health literacy.
One trial of 301 randomized participants found that those who trained in MHFA
have greater confidence in providing help to others, increased likelihood of
advising people to seek professional help, improved concordance with health
professionals about treatments and decreased stigmatizing attitudes. For further
evidence supporting MHFA, please see the Evaluation section of Mental Health
First Aid™ Australia’s website.
