WHAT JUST HAPPENED? This is an authorized Entergy phishing simulation. This simulation helps Entergy Corporation understand the effectiveness of security measures and improves the ability of staff to spot and correctly handle phishing emails. Phishing is the MOST successful means bad actors use to impact a company's operations or to steal confidential, sensitive or personal information. Tricking users via phishing has caused the most data losses and has impacted numerous companies. Phishing is the name given to a type of scam, usually conducted via email, social networks or instant messaging in which the attacker attempts to get the victim to click on a malicious link, open a file attachment, or trick the user into entering their password into a fake web site. Phishing emails often use official logos, colors and even correct phone numbers in order to appear legitimate. COAST GUARD REPORTED RYUK RANSOMWARE HIT SYSTEMS THAT MONITOR CARGO TRANSFERS AT MARITIME FACILITY Hackers used Ryuk ransomware(A type of crypto-ransomware that uses encryption to block access to a system, device, or file until a ransom is paid.) to infiltrate computer networks at a marine transportation facility, causing an outage of roughly 30 hours, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a recent security advisory. The incident resulted in the disruption of “the entire corporate IT network,” and difficulties for cameras and physical access controls, among other tasks, according to the advisory. The facility shut down its primary operations for 30 hours while incident responders reacted to the situation. “Once the embedded malicious link in the email was clicked by an employee, the ransomware allowed for a threat actor to access significant enterprise Information Technology (IT) network files, and encrypt them, preventing the facility’s access to critical files,” the bulletin stated. “The virus burrowed into the industrial control systems that monitor and control cargo transfer and encrypted files critical to process operations.” TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE: * Do not trust any email that urgently requests your personal information, username or password. * Look for the Entergy external sender banner! This is placed at the top of all incoming emails if they originate outside of Entergy. EXTERNAL SENDER. DO NOT click links, or open attachments, if the sender is unknown, or the message seems suspicious in any way. DO NOT provide your user ID or password. * Never click on links in emails until you confirm the sender is authentic. * Check the "From:" field closely but know that the "From:" field can be spoofed. * Phishing websites may look real, by using company logos, and domain names that might be close mis-spellings or lookalikes. * Be suspicious of attachments with a generic or impersonal message. * Think about the information you are being asked to provide. Legitimate companies will not ask you to provide personal or sensitive information over email. * Legitimate companies will never ask you to confirm your personal information or username/password in an email. If you ever receive a message that doesn't look quite right or you have any questions about suspicious emails, please contact the help desk.
