GREEN BOATS

Read More

Do you want to learn about Kingman Lake, our Green Boats program, and the trash
that ends up in the lake? Join us at the Green Boats station to meet Living
Classrooms staff and learn with us! As the water temperature is too cold, we'll
be staying on shore and running land activities including a trash toss and an
opportunity to try out our boats on shore.

exciting ecosystem using nets and hand lenses to observe some of the smaller
inhabitants up close. Living Classrooms guides will be available to help you

FRESHWATER MUSSEL

Meet the mussels! You will have the opportunity to meet some of the native
freshwater mussels who call the Anacostia River home. See the power mussels have
to clean our environment through a water filtration demonstration and join us in
making your own clay mussel-model.

Did you know there are many benefits to our ecosystem when we keep our dogs
on-leash while exploring the islands? Stop by to sign the Paw Pledge and have
your dog become a Kingman Bark Ranger! Dogs will receive an official Bark Ranger
bandana and will help ensure all people and creatures are kept safe and happy on
the islands.

CLEANUP

Read More

Join members of the DC Surfrider Chapter starting at 1:00 pm in a cleanup around
Kingman Island! The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and
enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, for all people, through a
powerful activist network and cleanups like this one. Make sure to bring your
reusable water bottle and sunscreen. Cleanup supplies will be provided!

 
 

SENSORY OBSERVATION EXPLORATION

Want to learn how to make observations in nature by using almost all of your
senses? Join us in the meadow to find out what you can observe with your eyes,
hears, nose, and hands! Participants will be able to use these observations
skills for future explorations anywhere you go.

SCAVENGER HUNT

Want to learn why trees are so important in the District? Join Casey Trees, who
will have activities for all ages including a Tree Bingo Game and a scavenger
hunt using their Kingman & Heritage Islands specific tree guide. You can also
learn basic tips for tree ID using the Casey Trees Species Guide! Talk to us
about what we do in the city and how you can get free trees for your yard or
community.

SIMULATION MODEL

Are you curious about what causes storm water runoff and flooding in the city?
Join us to use a large-scale model to create, test, and visualize how this
happens within the District. Work as a team to find and test solutions to a
variety of watershed and floodplain problems simulated by the model.

Do you love books and music? Gather in one of our favorite story time spots to
hear stories and sing songs that celebrate nature. Free Forest School hosts
weekly free play dates on the islands focusing on child-led exploration, which
usually close out with a story time just like this one. Come for the
fingerplays, stay for the fun boulder-clambering opportunities!

Have you ever wondered about the life hiding just below the surface of the
Anacostia River? Come meet our special guests, some of the fascinating native
and invasive aquatic species living here in the District. Participants will also

Be Extra-Oar-Dinary and learn how to row like a pro while staying dry on land!
Expert rowers from the Anacostia Community Boathouse will teach participants how
to row using ergs, a machine used to simulate rowing on the water.

WALK

Read More

Ever want to explore the walking trails of Heritage Island? Interested in
learning the difference between native and invasive trees? Join Casey Trees and
the Kingman Island Rangers for a guided walking tour of the islands!
Participants will learn about island restoration projects and tree
identification skills. The 30 minute guided walk will start at 12:30pm at the
picnic tables on Heritage Island by the foot bridge. All ages welcome!

are being maintained and restored? Kingman Island Rangers are here to help and
happy to answer any of your questions. Rangers will be wearing Kingman and
Heritage Island blue Ranger shirts.

Did you know more than 100 bird species were spotted on the islands last year?
How many birds can you find?! Join the DC Audubon Society to learn how to find
and identify the island birds using different types of binoculars.

Read More

Take a moment to stop and reflect while you explore the islands by learning to
make a field guide with Urban Adventure Squad! Use a field guide to write and
draw your observations, questions, and the memories you make on the island, in
your neighborhood, or on any adventure.

 


FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)




HOW DO I GET TO KINGMAN AND HERITAGE ISLANDS?

For directs by metro, bus, streetcar, foot or bike, and car visit:
www.kingmanisland.com/visit. Parking will be limited. We highly recommend you
bike, walk, or take public transit.


WILL THERE BE FOOD AND DRINKS FOR SALE?

There will not be food or drink for sale during the event. We welcome you to
pack a picnic! Bonus points if it is a zero waste lunch. There will be water
jugs available to refill water bottles.


ARE THERE BATHROOMS ON THE ISLANDS?

Portable bathrooms will be available during the event.


IS THIS A KID FRIENDLY EVENT?

Yes! All activities are designed for kids and adults.


WHAT ARE THE COVID SAFETY PRECAUTIONS?

All COVID health and safety guidelines will be strictly followed. Activities and
tables will be spread out throughout the islands to prevent crowds and give
everyone an opportunity to explore different areas. All shared items (paddles,
nets, art supplies, etc.) will be cleaned in-between each use.


CAN I BRING MY DOG?

Dogs on a leash are welcome on the islands. Please keep in mind that there will
be children and activities which might create a stressful environment for your
dog. Be sure to stop by the Bark Ranger table to sign a Paw Pledge and receive a
Bark Ranger dog bandana!


WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

We recommend you wear comfortable clothes and shoes appropriate for outdoor
activities including paddling, yoga, and nature walk. All activities will be
outside.
