The advancement in the field of medicine has made available the assisted reproductive technology (ART). But how can one determine as to which one is the best for them? IVF, ZIFT, and GIFT- all have their pros and cons. This article will help you know more about GIFT and will guide you on how it fares in comparison to the other fertility treatments. What is Gamete Intra-fallopian Transfer and how does it help? Gamete Intra-fallopian Transfer or GIFT combines modern medicine with the natural process. Many people feel that the union of the sperm and the egg is the beginning of life and should begin in the body and not in a petri-dish. GIFT works by collecting the sperms and eggs of the donors, mixing them and then re-introducing this mixture into the fallopian tube. This form of ART is beneficial for men who have a low sperm count. It has also been known to produce successful results for women suffering from endometriosis. However, it is advised that women who have issues with the fallopian tube should not apply for this treatment. Who can be treated with GIFT? The people who can benefit from this procedure include: Couples who are unable to conceive due to unknown causes. Couples who are not comfortable with IVF. Those who have tried IVF but have failed to get pregnant. Women who have a healthy fallopian tube. Men who have issues with a low sperm count Women who have cervical problems that prevent the sperm from entering the uterus Couples whose personal belief system does not agree with IVF Procedure of Gamete Intra-fallopian Transfer Below is the step by step process of what transpires before, during and after the surgery: An X-ray is done to do a thorough investigation of the fallopian tube and to check for scarring or the existence of blockages. You will be provided with certain drugs that will help stimulate your ovaries to produce eggs. Upon maturation, the eggs will be located using ultrasound. Two weeks after the hormone treatment, the doctor will extract the egg from the ovaries. This is done with the help of a small catheter. The entire process can take about half an hour. As a precaution, not more than two-three eggs are used. This is mainly to avoid complications like multiple pregnancies. The sperms (provided by your partner) in the meantime are collected and washed, ready to get mixed with the egg. A thin tubular instrument will be used to insert this mixture into your fallopian tube through the cervix via a catheter. In some instances, an incision (laparoscopy) will be made on your tummy to do the same. Progesterone hormones will be injected into the bloodstream or administered in gel form to help prepare the uterus. After fertilization, the blastocyst will implant itself into the uterus initiating the beginning of the pregnancy process. A pregnancy test should be taken after half a month from the date of the surgery to find out if the procedure was a success. How long does GIFT take? A gamete intra-fallopian transfer can be fully completed in one and a half months. This includes the entire process beginning from the initiation of the hormonal therapy and right until implantation. The surgical procedure alone would take a little more than eight hours, and you can go back home on the same day as the operation. Success Rate of Gamete Intra-fallopian Transfer The success rate of this procedure is dependent on age and health conditions. On an average, twenty-five to thirty percent of the couples succeed in conceiving using this method. Women who are young and in good health, stand a better chance of achieving success. Even if the procedure is not successful the first time, the process can be repeated, and the chances of success would not diminish. It is to be noted that if an older woman manages to produce a satisfactory amount of eggs, she stands the same chance as a younger woman. Difference between GIFT and IVF In IVF, the fertilization of the egg happens in a lab, and this egg is then placed inside the uterus. On the other hand, GIFT ensures that the fertilization takes place inside the body. After fertilization, the egg travels to the uterus where it implants itself. In IVF, the egg is artificially placed into the uterus. One significant advantage that IVF has over GIFT is that it does not require a functional fallopian tube. Difference between GIFT and ZIFT In ZIFT, a fertilized egg is placed into the fallopian tube rather than a mixture of the egg and sperm. On the other hand, GIFT allows a natural environment for the fertilization to take place whereas ZIFT does the fertilization artificially. Advantages of GIFT The procedure takes only about a day. Fertilisation takes place in its natural environment. Disadvantages of GIFT There is no validation method to know if fertilization has taken place. There is a chance of multiple pregnancies if more than one egg is used. This can lead to a miscarriage or financial/emotional burden of raising more kids than initially intended. It is invasive due to the use of a laparoscopy which increases the chance of complications. There is a risk of ectopic pregnancy where the egg gets implanted outside the uterus. Babies born using this method have a higher susceptibility to congenital disabilities. There is a chance that the treatment does not work. The entire process is time-consuming and expensive. The procedure relies on the same methods used for IVF in ovary simulation. If you have experienced ovarian hyperstimulation during IVF, there is a chance that you will experience the same with GIFT. While rare, there is a small chance of infection that can develop during this surgery. Cost of GIFT GIFT is an expensive method and costs between Rs 10.5 lakhs to 14 lakhs. This may or may not include the cost of medications. While this may seem to be an exorbitant amount, a study has shown that GIFT is more cost-effective than other fertility treatments. GIFT is one of the latest technologies that help couples conceive a child. There are a lot of controversies around assisted reproduction due to ethical considerations. Many believe that humans should not interfere with the creation process. Treatments, especially IVF, are an affront to God and nature. GIFT offers itself as a solution to those individuals who have such a belief system. After encountering nine months of body changes and various up and downs of hormonal levels, you now have a lively bundle of joy in your life. But for some of you, this happiness is still a far-fetched dream owing to the eczema attack post-delivery. Due to hormonal changes and skin changes during pregnancy, eczema can make a comeback at the time of pregnancy and after delivery. We will share some tips on how you can manage your eczema condition after your delivery and beyond it as well. What Causes Eczema After Child Birth? Pregnancy is the most beautiful time in a woman’s life, but it can also be a tough time for those who has already faced a bout of eczema earlier in their lives. The physical stress of having a baby and the hormonal changes associated with it can contribute to unexpected conditions like eczema to flare up. 1. Changes in Immune system Pregnancy brings a lot of change in the body and the immune system. The immune system generally becomes weaker to accommodate the baby and not to reject it as a foreign object. After the delivery, your immune system will start recovering and can at times overreact leading to inflammation of the body and the skin causing the eczema condition. 2. Changes in the hormone After your delivery, your body will start figuring out the correct balance of your hormones again. Hormonal eczema after pregnancy can cause your skin to get dry making them itchy and flaky. 3. Stress Post-pregnancy stress is also one of the major reasons to get an eczema attack after delivery. Sleep deprivation can increase your anxiety levels which in turn can lead to eczema condition. 4. New Allergies During and after pregnancy many of you can experience that you have developed new allergies. A quick allergy test can help you know the triggers to it so that you can avoid them and get relief from eczema. How to Deal with Post Pregnancy Eczema? Some of you experience eczema worst after delivery while others develop eczema after c-section. The most important thing to avoid or contain eczema is to know the possible causes of getting it after delivery. 1. Environmental Factors Most of the time it is the environment that acts as a trigger to developing eczema. Apply Aloe Vera Gel An application of aloe vera gel or calendula provides relief to the skin affected with eczema. 4. Black Currant Oil Include black currant oil in your diet 500 mg twice daily. It is rich in gamma-linolenic acid that is known to promote healthy growth of hair, skin and nails. 5. Avoid Dairy Products Try to avoid dairy and dairy products and products that have hydrogenated oils and trans-fatty acids. 6. Tepid Baths To alleviate your symptoms you can use warm tepid baths, followed by an application of emollients and topical steroids. 7. Take utmost care to wash off the medicines thoroughly before nursing the baby. Avoid wearing tight-fitting bras and wash off any moisture around your breasts with breast pads. Read this article to know how you can create a stimulating, challenging environment for your little one, so that he is never short of confidence. Environment plays a crucial role in shaping your child’s perceptions. A nurturing environment not only broadens his horizons, but also keeps his curiosity quotient high. In a positive environment, a child is not inhibited to ask questions or form opinions. He surges ahead in life with cheer and spirit. But, what exactly is environment? If viewed from your preschooler’s perspective, it is the combination of many factors or components such as –the visual, the auditory, the emotional and the social. A positive environment consists of all these factors in the right proportion. As a parent or caregiver, creating the right sort of environment is a challenge; you need to learn new things constantly. Creating a Cheerful Environment for Your Little One 1. Visual Environment Right since the time he is born, your little one watches the world with eyes wide open. As a preschooler, he begins assimilating these facts. Hence, look at your child’s nursery with his eyes. Are the walls too bleak? Or too cluttered? Is your child overwhelmed with too many brightly-colored shelves? If yes, then now is the time to re-define and un-clutter. A place where your child spends most of his time would have to be visually stimulating for his little developing brain. Don’t overwhelm with too many bright visual props. Instead, opt for a cleaner approach. Designate a space on the nursery wall to showcase his little creations; for example, the drawings which he has completed or his latest origami craft. You could also put washable paint in your child’s room, so that he can give vent to his creativity. Let your child’s nursery be the place of his pride - his own little personal nook. 2. Auditory Environment A stimulating auditory environment can enliven your kid’s environment. It also helps him to discern patterns and rhythms. Sing as you play with your child. Designate one day in a week, where all the members in the family could sit in a circle and sing their favourite songs. Also, encourage your child to form opinions. Encourage him to participate in group activities like choir, etc. Play soft music before putting him to sleep. 3. Integrated Environment Do you find yourself often complaining that your child is messy? There could be two reasons for this: Either he is too young to realise the importance of staying organised or he is unable to keep it organised. Ask yourself if the closet racks are too high? Are his favourite books always out of reach? Does he keep searching for all his favourite puzzles just because you hid them away for the fear of losing? Are your child’s favorite toys always invisible? If that is the case, you need to re-think about many things. Help your child feel that he’s in control of his life. Simplify the environment around him. Buy clothes which he can easily put on himself. Buy boxes or stools so that he can reach out for bathroom shelves and faucets. Teach him the importance of safety. Keep sharp objects out of his reach. 4. Emotional Environment The positive emotional environment at home is very important for normal child development. If a child feels safe and secured at home, then he will feel free to express himself and explore new things. Parent-child interaction must be emotionally nurturing. Generally, kids who grow up in such environment are sensitive and responsive to their needs. Encourage your child to try new things and express his ideas. A caring and responsive parent can provide a positive climate for kids, and this will help in cognitive development of kids. Finally, remember the right kind of environment makes the task of parenting much easier. Create the right environment and bring positivity into your preschooler’s life. Here are 21 Things You Should Start Doing Today! If there’s one day couples look forward to to celebrate their love, apart from their anniversaries, it’s Valentine’s Day! Come February, almost everything looks like it’s been adorned in something red or lacy - be it store windows or even websites you visit! As a couple with kids, you may not get much ‘we-time’ but V-Day makes for a good excuse to get some quiet time together to rekindle the romance between you and your partner. And we’re sure you want to look positively fabulous when the 14th of February rolls around. Well, start doing these things from today to make sure you’re glowing and ready for Valentine’s Day! 21 Things You Can Do to Look Drop-dead Gorgeous on Valentine’s Day Flawless skin, shiny hair, and the body for your dream outfit - these are pretty much the only three things that you need to get in order. Why? Well, beautiful skin sets the foundation for your makeup; if your hair is cooperative, you can style it just the way you like it; and of course you want to show off that lovely outfit you’ve been dying to wear ever since you set eyes on it! But there’s some work that needs to happen in the background to get these things in order! Follow these tips to look your best when you step out for a date night with your beloved! 1. Skin Health It’s probably just a couple of days in a year where you might want to take the extra effort to doll up instead of sporting an ashen face, panda eyes, and cracked lips! Make V-day an occasion to deck up for your partner by caring for your skin a few days in advance. Start with hydration. If you don’t drink enough water in a day, your skin quality starts to decrease. It becomes dry, leads to more breakouts because toxins are not getting flushed out, and also is a cause for chapped lips. Drinking water isn’t the only thing you need to do to hydrate your skin - invest in a good moisturiser and use it twice a day to nourish your skin. The results of proper hydration start showing in very little time, so start immediately. Before leaving the house during the day, check off a few things - keys, your phone, your child’s things, and also, whether or not you’ve applied sunscreen! We know we don’t need to harp on the benefits of using sunscreen but here’s a note - makeup products with SPF don’t count as substitutes for the real thing! Also, use a scarf or a shawl to protect your skin (and hair) from harsh sunlight. Don’t try out any new makeup/skincare products on the days leading up to V-Day. While it may not be as big a risk as we’re making it out to be, there’s still a good chance that your skin may react to unfamiliar ingredients...and NOT very favourably! Cleansing and toning your skin should be a part of your daily skincare routine. Once in a few days, exfoliate your skin well with a gentle scrub (don’t over-exfoliate to the point that your skin feels too raw either!). Indulge in an at-home steam facial too, using a vapouriser available at any pharmacy; 5 sessions of 2 minutes each, with breaks in between for your skin to breathe, is perfect. Apply a homemade face mask afterwards, to seal the deal. Exfoliation clears your skin of dead skin cells, steam opens up your pores, and a good face mask hydrates the skin and gives it that rosy glow! Nourish your skin from within by paying attention to your diet. Certain foods can do wonders for your skin health, while some, not so much. Cut back (don’t quit instantly though!) on sugar and spicy foods for a couple of days. Fill your diet with almonds, broccoli, strawberries, citrus fruits, leafy greens, and even dark chocolate (less than 20 grams a day). 2. Hair Health Lustrous locks call for daily care as well! Strengthen and nourish your hair in a short span with these handy tips. As much as you may find the need to constantly wash your hair, your hair would do better without it. Washing your hair every alternate day, as opposed to daily will give it a breather from drying out. And when you do wash your hair, never skip using the conditioner - a good conditioner helps detangle and smoothen your hair. Shampoo simply cleanses and removes impurities from your hair, while a conditioner locks in the moisture you need for healthy, shiny hair! Pull back your hair into a loose bun when you go to bed, such that it’s not flying about all over the place and getting entangled and knotted. The subsequent brushing process the next day will be nothing short of a battle - in which neither you or your hair will win! Also, before going to bed, massage your scalp gently with your fingertips for a little while. This promotes healthy blood circulation which will nourish the roots of your hair, making it healthier from within. Get your hair trimmed or try out a flattering haircut, so that by the time Valentine’s Day rolls around, your split ends will no longer will a woe to deal with, frizzy hair won’t bother you, and you’ll also feel amazing! Keep away from heat stylers till the 14th, whether it’s your handy hairdryer or straightener or curler. Instead, towel-dry your hair very gently with a microfibre towel, then leave it to dry naturally. You can use a leave-in conditioner if your hair is prone to too many flyaways. As with your skincare routine, depend on natural elements such as eggs, aloe vera, bananas, strawberries, yoghurt, argan or coconut oil, to pamper your hair. Use hair masks with these ingredients to give your hair the strength it deserves and the shine it’s capable of! Don’t just apply food items on your hair, include them in your diet too. Eggs, spinach, nuts and seeds, sweet potatoes, beans and so on can promote healthy hair growth. 3. Overall Health! With your skin and your crowning glory in place, the only other thing left to take care of is your overall health. It’s not just about becoming slim enough to fit into a dress; it’s also about promoting your confidence that’s going to add to your glamour! Now, losing weight in a few days can be achieved in a couple of ways – starvation or crash-dieting shouldn’t be one of them! Eat your fill to ensure that your body isn’t deprived of any nutrients and makes you feel all tired and haggard on the big day. The only thing you need to ensure is that you eat right! Cut back on carbs and sugar-laden foods. A low-carb diet typically includes sources of protein (meat, fish, etc.) and non-starchy vegetables. Grains, nuts and seeds, bread, sweets and so on are considered to be high-carb sources, which is what you’ll need to reduce in your diet in the days leading up to V-Day. Now, don’t stop eating all these all at once, because that won’t do your body any good either. Instead, phase them out slowly, and replace them with non-starchy vegetables and rich sources of protein. The results of cutting back on carb-heavy foods can be seen pretty quickly on the body. Watch your calorie intake. A lot of times, you may think you’re eating healthy but calories may be finding methods to work their way into your body. When you have a healthy green salad but dunk all those veggies in salad dressing, for example, that’s a way for your calorie count to increase. Also, watch out for liquid calories such as milk and sweetened beverages! Drink up! Chug down some water at least half an hour before every meal. This helps cut down your appetite and prevents you from reaching out for those second helpings. Stock up on soluble fibre sources such as oats, apples, figs, pears, carrots, strawberries, and so on. Most of these make for healthy snacks that will fill you up quickly and aid in digestion. Eat at home during all the days leading up to Valentine’s Day. Food served in restaurants, although yummy, will contain plenty of ingredients that you’re probably trying to avoid. At home, you can cook and eat consciously, as per your preference. Get active! Exercise is obviously important but one hour of aerobics or Zumba is not all that you need. Make conscious decisions such as using the staircase instead of the elevator or walking a couple of rounds around your building before you run up home. The best part is that these little things, if carried on for a while, will become an ingrained habit for you, benefitting your health in the long run as well! Another thing you can indulge in is facial exercises to get rid of facial fat. Simple things like head-and-neck rotations, sticking out a pout for at least 10 to 15 seconds, making the ‘smiling fish face’ expression (suck in your cheeks and lips while maintaining a normal posture with your head and shoulders, try to smile, and hold that pose for a couple of seconds), mimicking the act of blowing balloons, chewing gum and so on are great ways to get your facial muscles to move about. And the best exercise of them all? A constant smile! Get some shut-eye. Your body needs time to process everything that’s gone into it during the day, and lack of sleep can mess up the levels of your ‘hunger’ hormones, causing you to feel excessively hungry. The above tips, if followed to the T, are sure to bring about a difference to the way you look and feel in just a couple of days. And come Valentine’s Day, with your glowing skin, healthy hair, and a spring in your step from feeling fit, you’re going to look like a delight! A baby born at 36 weeks is considered "late preterm" and is typically safe to deliver, though there may be some risks compared to full-term births. At 36 weeks, most babies have developed most of their organs, but they may still face challenges such as difficulty feeding, regulating body temperature, or breathing. It’s important to monitor the baby's health closely after birth, and delivery at this stage is usually only recommended if there are medical reasons or complications. Consulting with your healthcare provider can help assess the risks and make an informed decision.
