Springfield Falcons player Ben Guite was named the captain of the team on
November 10, 2010 for the 2010-2011 season.
SPRINGFIELD – It’s been quite a week for Springfield center Ben Guite, and the
week is barely half over.
Monday, Guite became a first-time father, welcoming son Patrick into the world.
Wednesday, the cagey veteran was named as the Falcons’ team captain. As
developments go, this one was no surprise.
In fact, it could have been seen from here to Montreal, where Guite happens to
hail from.
It was certainly one of the easiest choices Springfield coach Rob Riley has made
in his two months on the job.
Balloting among the players confirmed Guite’s selection.
“I think we had a clear vote,” Riley said. “It was unanimous. (Assistant coach)
Brad (Larsen) and I were in total agreement. He’s the best. He really is an
awesome person.”
Indeed. More than any other sport, a hockey sweater sporting a “C” is a
treasured item.
The captaincy carries with it many responsibilities, most of them unwritten, but
vital, nonetheless.
Riley said Guite embodies everything a Falcons’ captain should be.
“He’s a leader,” Riley said. “A mentor to young guys. He’s a good story. We’re
very pleased.”
What the sweater letter should not necessarily be is a one-way ticket to the
American Hockey League.
Guite, has had big league stints in Boston, Colorado and Nashville, and harbors
hopes of getting back to the National Hockey League with the parent Columbus
Blue Jackets.
Riley would love nothing better than for that to happen.
“Maybe he gets that opportunity,” he said. “He’s the type of guy that doesn’t
make many mistakes. He’s very, very smart. You just hope for the best for him.”
To top off everything, Wednesday’s tilt was the 500th of Guite’s AHL career.
Veterans Nate Guenin and Michael Blunden were named assistant captains.
There was good news for another Falcon, veteran winger Steven Goertzen.
Goertzen, who had been playing under a professional tryout contract, had that
ripped up by management, and was signed instead for the rest of the year.
“We liked what we saw in him a lot,” Riley said. “He brings tremendous
leadership and size. He’s a great person. You can’t go wrong with guys like
that.”
Not a gifted scorer, Goertzen has just a goal and assist to show for his first
seven games.
But to Riley, the point total is a moot. point.
“He doesn’t have to be a numbers guy,” he said.
