CHAPTER 14 – FIRE AND WATER

1. Why does Smaug decide to destroy Lake-town? Whose “fault” is it that he
decides to seek revenge on the lake-men?

Smauge decides to destroy Lake-town because he knew that the dwarves must have
went past the Lake-men and have gotten help from them. It was Bilbo’s fault
because in the riddle he was saying to Smaug he talks about the barrels.

2. Who is the guard “with a grim voice”(p247)?

The guard was Bard.

3. Why do the men of Esgaroth destroy the bridges?

So that it is more difficult for Smaug to go and destroy the town.

4. Why can bard understand the thrush (pp. 250-51)?

He can’t understand because he is a part of the Dale race.

5. Why are the people of Esgaroth angry with Thorin? Do you think they have a
right to be angry? Do you think Thorin owes them anything?

They are angry with him because he woke up Smaug. I think that they have the
right to be angry because since Thorin woke up Smaug, he destroys their town. I
don’t think he owes them anything because even he didn’t know that Smaug will
attack their town and his only repayment could be to help them rebuild the town.
