The Albanese Government has slashed the number of New Zealand visa cancellations
based on character by almost half.

The drastic drop in Kiwis being sent back to New Zealand on character grounds,
which includes having a significant criminal history, has seen Labor accused of
'going soft on criminals, sex offenders and drug traffickers'.

In January, the Albanese government overhauled its approach to deporting NZ
citizens who have spent more than one year in an Australian prison.



Length of time someone has lived in Australia will be taken into account when
considering whether to deport Kiwis.

Department of Home Affairs documents found only 129 'Subclass 444' NZ visas were
cancelled in the 2022-2023 financial year.

It's a dramatic dip compared to the 244 cancellations in 2021-2022 and the 466
who were sent home in 2019-2020.

New data shows the Albanese Government has almost halved the number of New

Opposition immigration spokesman Dan Tehan said the relax on deportations could
be putting Australians in danger.

'Australians always worry that Labor don't have the stomach to take the tough
decisions to keep our country safe,' he told the Telegraph.

'They will now, rightly, be asking why is Labor going soft on criminals, sex
offenders and drug traffickers.

'The Coalition refused or cancelled 10,206 visas under the character provision
of the Migration Act, including 335 who were outlaw motorcycle gang members,
associates, or organised crime figures.

'We did this to keep Australians safe.'

Data showed the Department of Home Affairs eased on visa cancellations across
the board with only 280 made in total this financial year compared to 616 in
2021-22 and 914 in 2020-21.

Immigration Minister Andrew Giles told his department in January to consider how
long Kiwis convicted of serious crimes had lived in Australia before cancelling
their visas.

'The Department of Home Affairs must now consider the length of time someone has
lived in the Australian community as one of the primary considerations when
determining whether to cancel someone's visa,' a spokesperson for Giles said.

'Where individuals pose a risk to the community, the Australian government will
continue to cancel their visas and remove them.'

His announcement followed months of former NZ prime minister Jacinda Ardern
campaigning against the deportation of Kiwis who have no family in NZ.

In 2020, Ardern called out former Australian PM Scott Morrison for 'testing'
ties between the country by '(deporting) your people and your problems'.
