VIDEO: BEING A BETTER ALLY VIDEO: BEING A BETTER ALLY Print Inclusivity and diversity are important in the workplace, not only because companies with higher rates of diversity have been found to have increased profitability and productivity, but because fostering a work environment that encourages empathy and acceptance means creating a workplace in which people feel comfortable to be themselves. Pride Month is the perfect reminder that being an ally is an important part of creating a work environment that values inclusion. Be an ally and celebrate Pride, at work and beyond: Be visible. One of the most important first steps in becoming an ally for the LGBTQ+ community is visibility. Be open about your allyship! Doing so not only shows your support but can encourage others to become allies as well. From jewelry to buttons to other dress-code-appropriate attire, adding some rainbow additions to your wardrobe, inside or outside of work, during the month of June can be a fun and easy way to join in the festivities and show your support. Participate. From walking in a parade to attending a movie screening, there are all sorts of ways to participate in Pride Month. Members of the community should feel encouraged to invite coworkers to Pride events, and the company can join by offering sponsorships and accommodating schedules when possible. Take an active approach to incorporating inclusion into your company’s culture. Set a foundation of inclusivity by putting specific policies in your company’s introduction processes, which will help solidify acceptance and inclusivity as significant tenets of your organization in the future. Continue by hosting a seminar to increase sensitivity and offer an opportunity for education. If your company doesn’t already have one, you could also create a diversity and inclusion committee, which can help promote a culture of inclusion, assess hiring processes, organize events, and adjust policies to ensure inclusivity. Don’t make assumptions. It’s easy to make assumptions about others based on our own version of normal. But before you start assuming things about others—from their likes and dislikes to their identities—remember that each person’s experiences and circumstances are different. Be prepared to offer support. It’s an uncomfortable fact that members of the LGBTQ+ community experience higher levels of harassment than their cisgendered, heterosexual counterparts. As an ally, you should be prepared to speak up on someone’s behalf or address questionable comments. Allyship is active. Give back. Whether by organizing a donation or volunteering and encouraging others to join you, giving back to the LGBTQ+ organizations in your area is a fabulous way to celebrate Pride Month in the workplace. Companies can encourage team members to give back by planning fundraisers or giving employees an afternoon off to volunteer. Look beyond labels. People are layered. From hobbies to interests to opinions, no one is defined by a single aspect of their identity. Even when people seem different on the surface, the closer you look, the more likely you are to find similarities. We’ve all heard of “coming out,” that moment when a member of the LGBTQ+ community shares their orientation with family and friends. But what heterosexual people often overlook is that the process of “coming out” isn’t a single event but one someone will repeat in various situations—such as the workplace—many times throughout their life. A vital aspect of being an ally is helping to create social and work environments in which members of the LGBTQ+ community feel comfortable sharing their identity rather than being compelled to keep it secret. Watch: In this video from The Social, hear from members of the LGBTQ+ community on more ways you can put allyship into practice. They offer various tips on what to do and what not to do in order to achieve diversity and inclusivity in the workplace. Need help with this video? Click Here Next Steps: Educating yourself is a good first step in most situations and becoming an ally to the LGBTQ+ community is no different. There are many resources for education and opportunities to be an active ally, a prominent one being PFLAG, the first and largest organization for allyship in the United States. Remember that Pride isn’t confined to the month of June, and the focus on creating an inclusive workplace shouldn’t be either. SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW True or False.
