I rarely shell out for e-books these days, being on a strict budget, but I'm so
glad I broke the rules on this one! While this book may not be for everyone,
there are so many dimensions from which to appreciate it that I believe a great
many readers will be intrigued. Who among us doesn't have at least a second or
third hand connection to breast cancer? Many of us know people who've had
prophylactic mastectomies because they carried that especially terrible gene for
early, fast-moving breast cancer. On another front, a lot of us live in the
Southwest, and the whole country must surely be aware of the increase in numbers
and influence of the Hispanic peoples on our economy, culture, and politics, to
name only the most obvious, but how many of us non-Hispanics have any idea of
the complexities of Hispanic history and culture?
Many history buffs know that Spain had an ancient Golden Age in which the ruling
Muslims created a society tolerant of Jews and other peoples that allowed the
flowering of philosophy, literature, poetry and other scholarship. After the
passing of that era many Jews remained in Spain, enduring periods of persecution
and forced conversion to Christianity followed eventually by the creation of the
Spanish Inquisition. During this time some families of Conversos, the Jews who
had converted to Christianity and were now known as New Christians, achieved
distinguished rank and were among the Spaniards who went in conquest of the New
World. Then in 1492 all Jews were expelled from Spain, leading to a further
influx of Jewish families to the New World (in addition to many other
destinations). A small portion of these people, quite unbeknownst to themselves,
were carrying that fearsome gene that causes breast cancer most often, but also
cervical and prostate cancer. Long identified as an Ashkenazic gene, scientists
now know that it predates those divisions of the Jewish population and exists in
Jews of Sephardi (Spanish) origin, too.
So now the threads of history, religion, Southwestern American culture,
epidemiology, cancer genetics and some of our present day friends and relatives
all converge into one incredibly fascinating story. Jeff Wheelwright, a
freelance journalist knowledgeable in science, tells the story, leading us from
a touching personal story of a young, cancer-stricken Hispano woman and her
family who've lived in the same place for 400 years(!), moving on to introduce
us to leading researchers, Spanish and Jewish history, and back again to the
poignant story of how a single gene can have such a devastating impact on
individuals, families and communities. I was struck by how seamlessly the author
moved from one scenario to the next, and most remarkably, how beautifully he
kept himself in the background, simply offering facts, background and
observances for the reader to take in without feeling that he was twisting
anything or promoting his own agenda. As a fifth-generation Texan Jew-by-choice
who has degrees in social science and public health I was obviously in heaven!
But even if just one topic mentioned appeals to you, I urge you to read this
book. Beyond the specifics of Wheelwright's story, it can give you a basis for
pondering the world we live in in all it's subjectivities as well as the more
obvious objectivities. How have our own lives been shaped by political or
economic history we are no longer aware of? What unknown stories live in our
family backgrounds that are-right now-shaping who we are and how we think? At
the beginning of this review I said this book might not be for everyone, but
I've changed my mind. It IS for everyone! Read and enjoy!

As a native southern Coloradan and someone who was raised a JW, I was
particularly interested in this book when I learned about it. My ex-husband, the
father of my children, is Hispano, as well; his family is from northern New
Mexico. So there's much for me to find interesting in this book. The Medina
family is like many I've known, including my ex-husband's family, who also
converted from Catholicism to the Witnesses. One of the reviewers here didn't
understand what that had to do with the story about the BRCA gene, but I
understand why Wheelwright focused on it so heavily. Along with the old Hispano
herbal treatments that many people still use, many JWs I've known prefer
homeopathy to traditional medicine. I don't know why, as there are no doctrinal
prohibitions against it (except for blood transfusions). But I knew many JWs
like this, and not just in the Hispano families. I enjoy the book's story of
southern Colorado, of the Hispano people there, and the weaving in of culture
and religion, which is important to this story. I found some of the writing
irritating, but Wheelwright does tell an interesting tale. The book has a lot of
scientific information, which some people might have trouble weeding through.
But that's the whole story, so if you aren't interested in the science, this
book isn't for you.

When I began reading, I did not realize how scientific the book would become in
tracing a genetic mutation from a specific area in the United States inhabited
by American "Indians" to a specific location in Europe known for a specific
Jewish sect. The author was very good at weaving real life stories into his tale
of discovery. It was difficult to set the book aside for very long. I would
definitely recommend this book with the warning that some passages became more
difficult due to the medical/genetic explanations which were vital to
understanding how the discoveries were made in the genetic field.

This is a well-written, surprisingly page turning book that reads life a
mystery. First, why does breast cancer and other cancers run so rampant in one
particular family in a small part of the Southwest, who consider themselves
Meixican-American? The wandering gene is Jewish, and how it came into this
family, the history of Jewish genes and unusual genetic disorders that result
are very insightful and fascinating.

Not sure. Am still reading this but the point where I am in the book feels like
it has left the realm of real science to enter and emphasize a former view of a
race of people. But, perhaps I have not read enough. However, what the size of a
nose has to do with BRCA1 is beyond my comprehension.

I enjoyed the information provided in the book. The writing is very stilted, and
needs editing! Most times did not realize someone was speaking because of a
total lack of quotation marks. Lots of rereading paragraphs because without
proper punctuation, did not make sense the first time around.

I am about three-fourths done but so far it hasn't fulfilled my curiosity.
Primarily because the book focuses primarily on the social-biology of the main
character. My interest was to obtain insight into the biology of her
tumorigenesis -- maybe it will appear at the very conclusion.
This lack of focus has slowed down my reading and may preclude my completing the
book.
