Your weekly round-up of the latest manufacturing news, insight and intelligence Having trouble viewing this email? Weekly News Tuesday July 11th, 2023 From the Editor Some big commitments in this week’s news, starting with Stellantis upping the ante signing an agreement with the Italian government that will see it increasing its production in the country, rise to 1m vehicles. Also making a big commitment are Renault and Geely who have formally signed a joint venture agreement to establish a new powertrain technology company that will focus on developing and producing next generation hybrid and ICE powertrains. It’s interesting for a few reasons, not the least of which is that the business model is to provide end-to-end powertrain solutions to the global market, not just the partner’s own brands. It also offers a solution as to what to do with your existing ICE production operations. In addition, the two OEMs are interested in attracting other OEM partners to join the venture. It will be interesting to see if this becomes a template for further merging of development and production assets within other parts of the automotive sector, as companies look to reduce costs and optimise manufacturing. The weekly news wouldn’t be complete without some mention of AI. In this case it’s Mercedes-Benz taking another step in the digitalisation of its production operations by integrating ChatGPT into its MO360 production system. The aim is to increase the accessibility of the digital production systems, allowing the operators to improve the efficiency of operations and reduce downtime far more effectively. Very interesting stuff and one to follow. You can read these and many more in-depth stories, and view on-demand videos on our website.
