Topping in Local Government — Oct 28, 2024 CYBERATTACK DISRUPTS COPPELL, TEXAS, AS CITY REMAINS SILENT ON CAUSE The Texas Attorney General’s Office has confirmed that the City of Coppell, Texas, fell victim to a cyberattack on October 23, 2024, at approximately 8 a.m. CST. This attack has severely impacted Coppell’s citywide operations, disabling access to essential systems, documents, and records management across city departments. As of October 28, city staff remain unable to access critical files, and public-facing services—including internet access, phone lines, utility billing, court operations, and digital library resources—are still significantly limited. Despite the widespread impact on services, 911 emergency services remain fully operational. The City’s online bulletin board has been designated as the official site for ongoing updates as the team works cautiously to restore systems. The city expects the disruption to continue until at least October 29, as IT and cybersecurity teams work through a cautious, step-by-step recovery process to ensure network security. City Manager Mike Land has expressed appreciation for the community’s patience, emphasizing the city’s commitment to meeting essential needs despite the outage. The fact that the cyberattack was confirmed by an external source rather than the city itself highlights a concerning trend of authorities withholding information about attacks that impact critical services.
