Neil VigdorReporting on national politics With about five weeks to go, several candidates still have work to do to meet the party’s criteria for securing a spot onstage. Here’s who could be in the mix → Eric Thayer for The New York Times Former President Donald J. Trump, the G.O.P.’s clear front-runner, has repeatedly indicated that he could skip the party’s debates and said that he has little to gain from them. He also has not said whether he would sign a pledge to support the eventual nominee — one of the requirements to qualify for the debate. But he signed the same pledge in 2015 and reneged on it before becoming the nominee. Doug Mills/The New York Times Candidates must have at least 40,000 unique donors to get onstage. Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, Trump’s main Republican rival, appeared to check that box at the end of May. He has also consistently polled in the double digits, comfortably above the party’s 1 percent threshold for the debate. Jason Henry for The New York Times Vivek Ramaswamy, the multimillionaire entrepreneur, appears to be on solid footing for the debate, too. He had 8 percent support in a recent Morning Consult national poll. And as of early June, his campaign spokeswoman said he had more than 43,000 individual donors. Jon Cherry for The New York Times In an appeal to his followers on Twitter, Mike Pence, Trump’s former vice president, urged people last week to give to his campaign so that he could hit the magic number of 40,000 donors. He was at 7 percent support in the most recent Morning Consult poll. Jordan Gale for The New York Times Nikki Haley, Chris Christie and Tim Scott, who were lodged in a three-way tie at 3 percent in the same poll, have all indicated that they have enough donors to make the cut. These candidates have name recognition, but will need the debates to create memorable moments for their campaigns. Christie in particular may use the platform to attack Trump. Commenting on the prospect of Trump’s skipping the debate, Christie called him a “coward.” Haiyun Jiang and Pete Marovich for The New York Times Securing a spot could be a heavy lift for a group of long-shot candidates, for whom getting onstage or not will be a make-or-break moment. Asa Hutchinson, the former Arkansas governor, acknowledged that he had a fraction of the 40,000 donors, though he had 1 percent in last week’s poll. Doug Burgum, North Dakota’s wealthy governor, is offering $20 gift cards to anyone who gives at least $1 to his campaign — a strategy that could raise legal concerns.
