With Android N, Google is giving one of the strongest parts of Android - the
notification shade - a major revamp. However, with the final release of Android
N still more than a few months away, there is always a possibility that Google
has a change of heart and brings this feature to Android smartphones and tablets
as well. And if the way Google has worded things on the Android N developer
preview page, it looks like this feature will only be making its way to Android
TVs. Picture-in-picture brings that same functionality to a system level, though
this feature is currently missing from the first developer preview of Android N.
Think of this feature as how you can minimise a video to a corner in the YouTube
app, while you can continue to browse within it. Taking a cue out of Apple’s
book, Google has also introduced a new picture-in-picture mode in Android N.
Google’s implementation, in my opinion, is faster and will make switching
between apps a breeze.Īdditionally, the Recent Apps UI now features larger app
cards that makes it easier to tap on them.

This feature is very common in custom ROMs, though they require a long press to
toggle between your two most recent apps. You can also switch between two apps
that you are using by quickly double pressing the recent apps button. On Android
N, pressing the recent apps button while in the recent apps UI will toggle
between the applications that you have opened, instead of taking you back to the
foreground app or your home screen. Google has also greatly improved the
functionality of the recent apps button in Android N that will make it a boon
for heavy multi-taskers. Recent Apps buttonĭon’t worry if you think that
split-view is not going to be useful for you. You can read more about
split-screen multitasking in Android Nougat here. Even better, you can drag ‘n’
drop text from one app to another in this mode, which can come in incredibly
handy in some situations. Google’s implementation is similar to how the
multi-window feature works on Samsung’s TouchWiz: you put an app in split view
mode by long pressing the recent apps button, which then also brings up the
recent apps switcher at the bottom of the screen to allow you to select the
second app you want in split view.īy default, the split-screen mode gives both
apps 50% of the usable screen area, but this can be changed to one’s liking by
dragging the handlebar between the apps up or down. Split-screen was among the
most requested features from seasoned Android users, and Google is finally
adding it to the OS. This is the probably the biggest new feature of Android N.

lending a much heavier emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving. It's worth
observing that Uncharted 3 is much less a shooter than previous entries in the
series. You'll also spend a fair amount of time crouching behind cover,
engrossed in hectic third-person shootouts. One such platforming sequence -
aboard a rundown harbour construction - takes props from Sony Santa Monica's God
Of War series, panning the camera out until Drake is nothing but a pixel on an
intricate construction. Platforming is still something of an automatic pleasure,
as excellent animation and level design allows you to scale more ambitious
locations than ever before. Moment to moment you'll be engaged in the same kind
of activities as previous Uncharted titles. The game builds its plot on top of a
period of history in which Sir Francis Drake went unaccounted for, and claims
that the legendary explorer went in search of Ubar - or the Atlantis Of The
Sands - by direction of Queen Elizabeth. Like past entries, it is loosely
grounded in some aspects of reality. Uncharted 3 easily has the best plot of the
series. That such an exploration of a video game character's background can
provide such a shock-and-awe moment is testament to Naughty Dog's strength as a
story teller. One mid-game conversation between Drake and the game's main
antagonist - Katherine Marlowe - manages to flesh out huge parts of the
character's backstory, and it really adds context to the actions and motives of
the character. We learn about the origins of their relationship, and also the
history of Drake. While favourites such as Elena and Chloe make fleeting
appearances during the campaign, Uncharted 3 is really all about Drake's
relationship with Sully.

You'll have an even greater connection to some of these familiar faces by the
end. What Naughty Dog's built over the past two Uncharted titles is a
relationship with its characters. That Naughty Dog managed to craft a game laced
with so many speculative scenarios is a real testament to its ambition. It has
several - far too many to count on one hand. But Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
doesn't stop at having one memorable moment. BioShock had the famous "would you
kindly" twist. Red Dead Redemption had the horse ride into Mexico. Call Of Duty
4: Modern Warfare had the nuclear bomb. Most great games have one or two
memorable moments. It's a culmination of everything Naughty Dog has been
striving to achieve, and it comes together so effortlessly that it's rather
startling. It may sound hyperbolic - and some will disagree - but Uncharted 3
emphasises the very reason we play video games.įor us, Uncharted 3 is the
strongest series. Each of our experiences in the interim have felt like stepping
stones on the path to Uncharted 3. For 20 years we longed for a cinematic
interactive experience capable of rivalling those we watch on the silver screen.
Lawrence's poignant phrase as the curtain raises on Uncharted 3: Drake's
Deception. "All men dream: but not equally." Nathan Drake utters T.E. Uncharted
3: Drake's Deception realises what we dreamed video games would one day become.
