OUR CURRENT NEEDS

Here is up to date info on what our animals are currently in need of.

Pocahontas aka "Pokie"

Pocahontas, aka "Pokie" is our 20 year old sweetheart Donkey. She was
surrendered to a fellow rescue that reached out to us about taking in
Pokie. They didn't have the resources or knowledge on how to care for
donkeys. We didn't either, but were eager to learn. We immediately said yes, but
she wasn’t safe to transport. As you can see in the pictures, her hooves were
more than 2 feet overgrown. Our incredible farrier, Steve and his brother, Scott
so graciously agreed to make several trips 2 hours away to get her feet on the
way to recovery  When she arrived, we quickly realized she was malnourished
with ulcers. We started her on specialty feeds and supplements specifically for
donkeys to help with her ulcers, weight, hooves, muscles and arthritis. We had
our amazing vet, Dr. Cobb take X-rays of her hooves. They showed she suffered
from laminitis, but with X-ray guided trims, she is doing better each day.Pokie
was a severe neglect case, but not in the way one might immediately think. There
was no malice or deliberate neglect. She was owned by an adult with medical and
learning disabilities. After learning more about Pokie's story, she wasn't
deprived of love. She was in fact very loved. Her family was never shown how to
care for donkeys. Had we been the ones that were first to rescue Pokie, we would
have handled things differently. Education is a beautiful thing. It quite
possibly could have been a situation where if proper care was taught, funded by
us and supervised by us to guarantee proper care continued, she could have
stayed with a family that loved her so much. Having children
with learning disabilities ourselves, we believe wholeheartedly, they too should
be able to feel the love and companionship of animals. Animal companionship for
someone with special needs in the very hard and cruel world they live in is
needed beyond measure. Their unique ability to make you feel in a safe place to
feel loved with an innate ability to heal hearts. At some point, we were all
beginners and had someone who taught us how to care for them. I just wish that
someone had taken the time to teach them how to care for their donkey. Pokies
journey inspired us to start our mission of educating people about our rescues
and how to care for them. She also sparked the vision so close to our hearts, to
open our doors to those with disabilities, those that have been at the hands of
neglect and abuse or other traumas themselves. Their ability to capture our
hearts teaches us so much with their willingness to trust and love even when
they have every right not to. We are better people because of them. Our dream is
to educate people about animals and the healing effects they have on us. To grow
awareness through events at the ranch where abused, neglected, victums of
domestic violence or child abuse, veterans and all those seeking compassion,
healing and uncoditional love that only an animal can offer.

OUR MISSION

At Rusty's Rescue, our mission is to save one heart at a time.

We rescue horses from the most horrific cases of abuse and neglect that animal
control seizes and save horses that are about to be shipped to slaughter in
Mexico.

With kind hearts, patience and lots of groceries, the horses begin to feel safe
and learn to trust again. Our team of veterinarians, farriers and volunteers
provide the most loving and genuine care. To ensure they can live out the rest
of their lives worry free, we evaluate them for soundness, temperament and
training.

Our goal is to get them healthy to find their forever homes. If for medical or
behavioral issues prevent them from being adoptable, our rescues become
permanent residents where they can live out their lives in retirement and
leisure at our ranch.
