Big Brother 21: Year of the Red Witch We’re back! Big Brother 21 wrapped up on
Friday, and it’s time for another installment of Big Brother Look Backs, where I
dive headfirst into the chaos, drama, and unforgettable moments that defined
each season. Sorry this one took a bit longer—I initially filmed it at 27
minutes and that’s just not okay The Highlights
This season gave us: * The Red
Witch vs. The Core Group drama 🧙‍♀️ * Arguments over bagels and sausages 🌭 *
Lily’s over-the-top tantrums 🎭 * Hanah struggling with the Oliver Twist
lifestyle 🥖 * ITV editing controversy 👕 * A relationship that had the nation
scratching its head 🤔 At 41 days, this was the shortest Big Brother ever, but
it didn’t skimp on new twists like the American Head of House concept. Sadly, no
talent show this year—so Noky Minaj remains undefeated as the best Big Brother
rapper. Meet the Housemates * Ali Bromley (Winner) 🏆 – Survived the most
evictions and took the crown with 51.9% of the public vote. * Marcello Spooks *
Emma Morgan * Hanah * Nathan * Segun * Thomas * Sarah * Rosie aka Baked Potato *
Khaled * Lily * Dean * Martha * Izaaz * Daze * Ryan Ali Bromley: The Polarising
Winner Ali became one of the most divisive housemates. A neurodivergent forensic
psychologist, her analytical and direct personality led to fiery clashes and
conspiracies labeling her as the "Red Witch." * Ali vs. Marcello:
Marcello’s
crude humor—like calling himself a “human ejaculator” and comments on Sarah’s PH
levels—landed him in hot water. Ali consistently called him out, but instead of
reflecting, Marcello played the victim. Their tension peaked when Big Brother
revealed footage of Marcello falsely claiming Ali tried to “vape kiss” him. *
Ali vs. Khaled:
Their “feud” felt like playground drama. Ali accused Khaled of
being fake, but they later reconciled, with Ali defending him behind his back. *
Ali vs. Segun:
Ali didn’t buy Segun’s Mr. Nice Guy act, especially after the
“Red Witch” situation. Segun’s hypocrisy showed when he voted for Daze to be
evicted, only to act devastated afterward. Segun & Hanah: Flirtation Fallout
Their flirtation hit the rocks when Hanah’s friends sent her a message in the
house. She confronted Segun with Ali by her side, proving Hanah didn’t entirely
buy into the anti-Ali narrative. Nathan & Baked Potato: A Love Story? Nathan and
Rosie (Baked Potato) became an unlikely couple, revealed after a fire alarm
incident. Unfortunately, Rosie faded into the background post-romance, leaving
viewers (and housemates) unconvinced by their connection. Controversial Comments
Nathan pressured Khaled to speak more about the P@lestine conflict, despite
Khaled sharing his family’s personal trauma. A low point for Nathan. Sarah’s
"stop the gloats" remark received 700+ Ofcom complaints, highlighting her
ignorance. Scream Queen Lily Lily was a whirlwind—loud, larger-than-life, and
unfiltered. While her antics (nose-picking, screaming) annoyed housemates, her
bond with Ali exemplified Big Brother’s magic: unlikely friendships. ITV Editing
Drama ITV faced backlash for editing Ali’s pro-Palestine t-shirt into a plain
black one when uploading episodes to ITVX. Viewing Figures * Averaging 1.5–1.8
million, significantly down from last year’s 2.8 million. * Despite lower
ratings, ITVX reported 96 million streaming hours, leading to a renewal.

The YouTube BRIT Crew In the early 2010s, a group of British YouTubers became
pioneers of modern influencer culture, gaining fame alongside the rise of
British pop culture globally. Their early success and controversies paved the
way for today’s influencers. Key Members: * Zoe & Alfie (Zoella & Alfie Deyes) *
Became the most famous of the group with Zoella’s beauty content and Alfie’s
vlogs. Both expanded into businesses, partnerships, and had several
controversies (Zoella’s ghostwritten book, £50 calendar; Alfie’s tone-deaf
£1/day challenge). Now engaged with two children, they continue vlogging. * Jim
Chapman & Tanya Burr * Known for fashion, grooming, and make-up content, they
transitioned into writing books and launching brands. Married in 2015, divorced
in 2019. Jim now focuses on business ventures, and Tanya has pursued acting
roles. * Joe Sugg & Caspar Lee * Famous for pranks and challenges, Joe also
competed on Strictly Come Dancing. Caspar quit social media to launch
businesses, including MVE Talent, a digital creator agency. They collaborated on
travel shows and other projects. * Louise Pentland (Sprinkle of Glitter) *
Started with DIY/crafts, now a popular vlogger known for her unboxing videos and
motherhood content. She’s written books, hosted live podcasts, and even
interviewed politicians. Her warm, relatable style continues to resonate. *
Marcus Butler & Niomi Smart * Marcus created music/sports content, while Niomi
focused on fitness, beauty, and fashion. After breaking up, Marcus now runs
music and fashion businesses in Berlin, and Niomi continues her YouTube fitness
and travel content. Legacy: The BRIT Crew’s influence declined as their audience
grew older, and their 2017 Hello World event disaster didn’t help. However, they
laid the groundwork for influencer culture, teaching the next generation of
creators how to share their lives online. #JoesAlternativeHistory #YouTube

Babe… are you Facebook Famous? In the early 2010s, a group of teens/young adults
became Facebook Famous by posting viral content, fueled by angsty
Tumblr-inspired fashion and ideals, think Obey, Boy London, edgy photos, The
rise of Facebook's Subscribe/Follow button in 2011 led to meet-ups, viral posts,
and local celebrity status, but not really any chance to monetise As newer
platforms emerged, the Facebook Famous era faded, showing early lessons in
influencer culture and the need for content tailored to each platform. Though
it’s over, it paved the way for modern social media fame This video is not done
to incite any pile ons on any of these people, I just find it interesting this
was almost a blueprint of what we see so regularly now and comparing the
reactions to this to the new ways social media is governed and protected today

2016 Clown Sightings: What Was Going On? Welcome back to Alternative History,
where I cover bizarre moments that should be in textbooks but aren’t. Today,
we’re diving into the 2016 clown phenomenon—something so strange it led
McDonald’s to temporarily phase out Ronald McDonald, caused a fatality, and even
got the World Clown Association to ask people to stop Origins: * Clown sightings
actually date back to 1991 in Chicago during a "clown moral panic." Similar
events popped up in 2008 and 2014, linked to "Stranger Danger." * Clowns,
especially Ronald McDonald (the second most recognizable face to children after
Santa), became an eerie, sinister figure—a perfect horror trope brought to life.
* In the UK, a 2013 "Creepy Clown" sighting in Northampton turned out to be a
student film project. A similar sighting in 2015 added fuel to the fire. The
2016 Phenomenon: * The craze started in the US, sparked by viral test footage
for the movie Gags The Clown. This led to real-life copycat clowns, some even
luring children into the woods. Though no harm occurred initially, it caused
massive panic and police involvement. * Clown communities formed online, staging
stunts to go viral, with sightings spreading globally. * In 2016 alone, over 12
arrests were made in the US, and a fatality occurred in Wisconsin when a
16-year-old was unalived. In the UK, sightings in Essex and Newcastle included
clowns allegedly carrying weapons, prompting official warnings. Impact: * The
World Clown Association pleaded with people to stop dressing as clowns to scare
others. * Clown-related businesses like circuses saw economic downturns due to
heightened fear. * McDonald’s pulled Ronald McDonald from their marketing, which
many felt was long overdue. * Even the Russian Embassy in London warned citizens
about clowns, while Glasgow reported a surge in clown costume sales. * A "Clown
Purge," inspired by The Purge movie, occurred in Florida, with a family attacked
by 20 people dressed as clowns. Legacy: * Though some thought it was tied to the
promotion of IT, Stephen King himself denied involvement. * By late 2016, the
sightings fizzled out as the trend became cliché, achieving viral fame but
lacking staying power. The clown craze was wild, but like most viral trends, it
quickly burned out. #JoesAlternativeHistory #IT #Pennywise #2016Clowns

2012: The Year of Gangnam Style Welcome back to Alternative History, where I
explore pop culture moments that should be in textbooks but aren’t. In 2012,
Gangnam Style was that song. Whether you loved it or hated it, it transcended
demographics, broke records, and became a global pop culture phenomenon. Release
and Impact: * Released in July 2012, Gangnam Style became the first video to hit
1 billion views by December 2012. * YouTube called it an unprecedented hit, and
it dominated charts in 30 countries, peaking at #2 in the US, the highest
position for any Korean act at the time. * The song’s catchy beat and the viral
dance were key to its success. It parodied the flashy "new money" lifestyle of
Seoul’s Gangnam district. * While some critics praised it as the cultural
highlight of 2012, others dismissed it as monotonous. Pop Culture Influence: *
Gangnam Style appeared on major shows like Saturday Night Live, Dancing with the
Stars, Glee, and even involved the British Royal Family. * Flash mobs and
parodies exploded across the globe, even causing disturbances like in Thailand
where a flash mob at a ghost festival offended spiritual leaders. * Celebrities
and politicians joined in. Barack Obama’s 2012 election win was celebrated with
a Gangnam Style dance, and even David Cameron and Boris Johnson awkwardly danced
to it. * Notably, a gang fight in Thailand was sparked by rival groups doing the
dance, resulting in 50 shots fired. Why It Was So Successful: * The dance was
simple and easy to replicate, while social media helped spread its virality. The
song’s foreignness made it feel fresh and fun. * Gangnam Style paved the way for
K-pop’s global breakout, with artists like BTS and BlackPink finding mainstream
success. It also spurred a rise in interest in Korean culture, from language
learning to global K-dramas. * Psy was awarded a medal for promoting Korean
culture internationally. Though it might have gotten a bit annoying by the end,
there's no denying that Gangnam Style captured a moment in time, and it was a
genuinely happy, unifying craze. #JoesAlternativeHistory #GangnamStyle #Psy

CALL ME MAYBE? The story of one of the 21st century's biggest songs. Welcome
back to Alternative History, where I cover moments that should be in history
books but likely won’t. If you were online in the early 2010s, you remember
Justin Bieber and friends lip-syncing to Call Me Maybe. Even now, it’s a party
anthem that never fails. So, how did it blow up? Origins: * Released in
September 2011 on Canadian radio, Call Me Maybe was originally a folk song and
Carly Rae Jepsen’s international debut. * The song gained traction through
social media, especially after Justin Bieber heard it and helped Carly sign with
Schoolboy Records, leading to its global breakout. Why Was It So Successful? 1.
Lyrics: * The easy, visual lyrics—"I threw a wish in the well," "ripped jeans,
skin was showing"—paired with its sugary take on teen love made the song
irresistible. The iconic "Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy" became a pop
culture staple. 2. Promotion: * The viral lip-sync video featuring Justin
Bieber, Selena Gomez, and more captured the carefree spirit of the early 2010s.
Celebs and fans alike hopped on the trend, fueling its rise. 3. Critical
Reviews: * Unusually for bubblegum pop, the song received universal acclaim.
Critics praised its perfect, catchy simplicity. Records Broken: * The song is
the best-selling single by a female artist in the 21st century, with 18 million
copies sold worldwide, topping charts in 20 countries. * It’s certified Diamond
in the US and sold 2 million copies in the UK, ranking as the 8th best pop song
ever by Billboard. While Carly Rae has other great songs (Run Away With Me
deserves love too), Call Me Maybe made growing up in the 2010s feel so much fun.

The Backrooms: From Internet Horror to American Horror Story The Backrooms, one
of the most famous Creepypastas, is now the subject of American Horror Story.
But what are they, and why are they so creepy? Origins
The Backrooms started
gaining traction between 2011-2018, but they really blew up in 2019 on 4chan
when people began sharing eerie photos of locations that felt off. This became
the pinnacle of the "liminal space" aesthetic. The idea is simple: imagine
you're in an endless, empty maze of yellow rooms with the faint hum of
fluorescent lights and the scent of damp carpet. It's a place that should be
full of activity, but instead, there's just a sense of wrongness. It’s almost
like a video game glitch—where you “no-clip” through walls and end up in this
bizarre, unsettling place. If you’re unlucky enough to hear something in The
Backrooms, just pray it doesn’t hear you. Evolution
As more people joined in,
The Backrooms lore expanded. Now there are hundreds of levels and stories about
terrifying entities lurking in the endless maze. There's even a split between
those who want to keep the mystery alive versus those who expand it into more
detailed stories. Interestingly, the original Backrooms photo—only found in 2024
via the Wayback Machine—was taken at a furniture store in America during
renovation. That’s what makes this legend so spooky: it blends reality with
fiction. People are even hunting on Google Earth for entrances, believing The
Backrooms could be real! Media Impact
Of course, when the internet catches on,
the media follows. In 2022, a 16-year-old YouTuber named Kane Pixels made what
was called "the scariest Backrooms video" based on nostalgic memories from the
1990s and 2000s. It went viral and has since been picked up by A24 for
production. What makes The Backrooms so eerie is that they tap into our
collective nostalgia and discomfort with familiar places presented in an
unsettling way. That’s why things like 90s décor, old-school carpet, and even
pop songs re-imagined in horror movies can make us so uneasy—it’s something we
know, but warped into something terrifying. #JoesAlternativeHistory
