New Yorkers will be paying 15 cents more more to ride the subway or the bus later in August, and residents are set to spend nearly another $15 a month on average on electricity. That’s on top of rents near a record high, consistently keeping the Big Apple among the world’s most expensive cities. INFLATION CONTINUES TO BITE IN NEW YORK CITY Prices rose at 2.5% from a year ago in the New York metro area in June Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics Note: New York metro data encompass New York, Newark and Jersey City While the increases are minimal compared to much-too-high rents and other costs, they add to the long list of items that are already putting a strain on New Yorkers’ wallets. The cost of dining out was up roughly 7% in June from a year ago, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and even a classic slice of pizza costs more than in past years. And once the latest price increases are enacted, the cost of living will continue to rise. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s base-fare increase is its first since 2015; monthly passes and tolls on MTA bridges and tunnels will go up as well. Residents will also see electricity bills rise by rise by 9.1% this month after energy provider Consolidated Edison Inc. got the green light to raise prices to meet higher costs and improve operations. Rates will go up again in early 2024 and 2025.
