KODI HAS BEEN HACKED AND YOUR DATA HAS BEEN STOLEN, WHAT TO DO NOW?

This bridge has not brought good news for Kodi users. A few hours ago, those
responsible for the multimedia center announced unauthorized access in the
software used to manage their community forums, MyBB, which has resulted in an
unauthorized dump of the entire database of users registered in these forums.

The computer attack in question took place last February. The hackers used the
account of a former administrator, currently inactive, to connect to the update
console up to two times: on the 16th and 21st of that month. This account was
used to create a copy of the forum’s database, which they downloaded and later
deleted so as not to leave a trace.

After confirming that the owner of the account had not connected, the worst was
confirmed: have been hacked.

WHAT DATA HAS BEEN STOLEN FROM KODI

The backup copy of the database that the hackers have stolen includes all the
information that can be extracted from a forum. For example, it contains all
forum threads public and the hidden forums of the administrators and moderators
themselves. Private messages sent between users are also included. But this is
not the worst.

The database also included all kinds of user data, such as their Names (nicks),
the mail address used for registration and notifications, and even the password
(encrypted, yes) using the MyBB algorithms. The most important of this hacking
are the emails that have been stolen, and that will be used to carry out SPAM or
phishing attacks, and the theft of passwords that, although they were encrypted,
it is likely that the hackers can decrypt them if they know MyBB algorithms.

The good news is that there are no indications that they have accessed the
servers where the MyBB software is hosted, nor the Kodi development server or
downloads, so both the forum and the program itself are safe.


WHAT TO DO NOW

As users, we can do little else. The only thing that, knowing that this computer
attack has taken place, it is recommended change the password as soon as
possible to prevent them from connecting to our account. And, since the password
is linked to an email address, in case of using bad practices and reusing the
password on different sites, then we should change it as soon as possible on the
other sites where we used it.

For the rest, if we were not users of the Kodi forum we have nothing to worry
about, since the computer attack has not gone any further.
