DR. ANA OLIVEIRASPECIALIST IN ENDOCRINOLOGY IN PORTO

Completed a degree in Medicine at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical
Sciences (University of Porto) in 2002.
In 2003 and 2004, she attended the General Internship at the Centro Hospitalar
de Vila Nova de Gaia.
She completed the Complementary Internship in the specialty of Endocrinology in
February 2010.
She is a Hospital Endocrinology Assistant at Centro Hospitalar São João-EPE

WHAT IS ENDOCRINOLOGY?

Endocrinology is a medical specialty dedicated to the study and treatment of
diseases related to hormonal problems.

Hormones are substances produced in one organ of the human body that act on
other organs.

SINTOMAS

The thyroid may not show symptoms and have changes in its structure such as
nodules or goiter detected on ultrasound. Goiter is defined as enlargement of
the thyroid gland.

A GOITER IS DEFINED AS AN ENLARGED THYROID GLAND.
IT MAY OR MAY NOT BE ASSOCIATED WITH CHANGES IN THYROID FUNCTION (HYPOTHYROIDISM
OR HYPERTHYROIDISM). HYPOTHYROIDISM IS A FREQUENT ENDOCRINE DISORDER AND IS
MANIFESTED BY WEIGHT GAIN, COLD INTOLERANCE, EASY FATIGUE, AMONG OTHER SYMPTOMS.


Hormonal changes can also be responsible for body hair changes. Polycystic ovary
syndrome is a frequent pathology in young women and can cause hirsutism
(increase in body hair), menstrual irregularities and even changes in glucose
metabolism.
