WHAT IS PLANETARY HEALTH?

“Our definition of planetary health is the achievement of the highest attainable
standard of health, well-being, and equity worldwide through judicious attention
to the human systems—political, economic, and social—that shape the future of
humanity and the Earth’s natural systems that define the safe environmental
limits within which humanity can flourish.”

Report of The Rockefeller Foundation-Lancet Commission on planetary health, 2015

WHAT WE DO

IDE works to create change through advocacy, science, and education.

CHANGE

IDE is committed to being an agent for change. We work to make the Irish
healthcare system more green.

ADVOCACY

IDE is committed to use our position of privilege to speak out on issues related
to health and the environment. We do this through Direct Action and political
engagement.

SCIENCE

IDE aims to be involved in the promotion of planetary health science in Ireland.
We have published papers and spoke at academic conferences.

EDUCATION

IDE is committed to educating doctors and the public on the climate crisis and
its health effects. We aim to be a conduit through which those interested can
learn more about the issues facing us and how healthcare and climate interact.

It's great to see some progress, but the schematic used has several issues!

Some strange design decisions and compromises made. It looks overly complicated
and confusing so perhaps no wonder why so many 'cyclists' are going the wrong
direction.

We need to do better than this.

A Sunday used for washing up and laundry had us thinking about water.

Do you know how much water you use per day?

The average Irish person uses about 130 litres of water per day!

By fixing leaks and faulty taps and changing our habits, we can all reduce our
water use.

Probably one of the coolest cycle paths in the world!

Any ideas for where we could build something similar in Ireland?

In this episode IDE member and GP, David O’Connell, talks to Dingle GP, Dr.
Peadar O’Fionnain about his path into local climate activism and his current
campaign to be elected as Kerry’s first Green member of the county council.

They discuss a range of issues – how the process of seeking election has led to
a richer engagement with local community; the unique potential of the local
doctor to promote change;  the sometimes conflicted role of medicine in relation
to a green agenda; the importance of community and interdependence; and some of
the successes achieved on the Dingle peninsula.
