THE BEST COMPACT LUXURY SUVS YOU CAN BUY IN 2024: SMALL AND FANCY

These compact luxury crossover SUVs strike at the heart of the market.

MuirIllustratorJan 07, 2022

What do you get when you mix the most popular SUV size class—compact—with the
luxury segment? The compact luxury crossover SUV, which is easily one of the
most popular vehicle segments in the market. These upscale family haulers live
at an appealing intersection of affordability, city-friendly sizing, and style
in the crossover and SUV realm. This is a competitive space, with established
players such as the BMW X3 and Acura RDX mixing it up with newer entrants
including the Lincoln Corsair and Alfa Romeo Stelvio. These small luxury SUV
choices run the gamut from sporty and sophisticated to soft and luxurious—and
everything in between. Read on for a look at the best compact luxury crossover
SUVs as MotorTrend sees them, ranked from last to first via our Ultimate Car
Rankings.

15. 2024 CADILLAC XT5 | MT SCORE: 7.3/10

We recently rediscovered the XT5 when researching this story—this aging
crossover has been around largely unchanged since 2017, so you could understand
how we nearly forgot it existed. Luckily, our MotorTrend Buyer’s Guide team did
remember and rated the 2024 Cadillac XT5 dead last in the category. It’s nestled
in between the entry-level XT4 and the three-row (and much newer) XT6, all of
which are nearly invisible compared to Cadillac’s flashier Lyriq EV and famous
Escalade. The cabin presents as so-so; the onboard tech is old and driver
assists are lacking, yet the XT5 is quiet, offers non-turbocharged V-6 power (a
rarity in this category), and drives decently. [Read more on the Cadillac XT5]

15. 2024 CADILLAC XT5 PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Quiet, comfortable cabin
 * Unexpectedly agile
 * Spacious interior

CONS

 * Underwhelming interior quality
 * Dated tech
 * Needs more driver assists

 * Price: $45,290
 * Engine: 2.0L 235-hp/258-lb-ft turbo I-4; 3.6L 310-hp/271-lb-ft V-6
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 18–22/26–29/21–24 mpg
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 30/63 cu ft

14. 2024 INFINITI QX50 | MT SCORE: 7.3/10

At first blush, the Infiniti QX50 might appear to be a rather average, albeit
attractive entry in the compact luxury SUV segment. Under its curvy hood,
however, lives a remarkable variable-compression engine. This cutting-edge
VC-Turbo turbocharged I-4 marks one of the greatest steps forward for the
internal combustion engine in decades. It can change its compression ratio on
the fly to prioritize fuel economy or power. It's too bad this engine's
relationship with the QX50's continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT)
results in wonky surges, laggy response to inputs, and a general rubbery feeling
to the powertrain. Perhaps there are a few too many variables in play—pun
intended. The rest of the Infiniti is likable enough, but maybe wait for the
next-gen VC-Turbo and the kinks to be worked out. Oh, and for those who can deal
with the peaky VC powertrain but wish it were packaged in a sexier package, the
QX55—a sort of QX50 coupe—arrived for 2022. [ Read more on the Infiniti QX50 ]

14. 2024 INFINITI QX50 PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Relatively quick
 * Generous feature count
 * Roomy in back

CONS

 * Lackluster CVT performance
 * Poor fuel economy
 * Weird infotainment setup

 * Price: $42,350
 * Engine: 2.0L 268-hp/280-lb-ft turbo I-4
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 22–23/28–29/25–26 mpg
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 31/64 cu ft

13. 2024 PORSCHE MACAN | MT SCORE: 7.5/10

Porsche’s Macan At a crossroads, the lineup split between the existing
gas-powered models and the new all-electric Macan Electric that’s mechanically
unique. The traditional versions—the Macan, Macan T, Macan S, and Macan GTS—use
turbocharged four- and six-cylinder powerplants making up to 434 hp, while the
new Macan Electric gets a single rear motor with 335 hp, though dual-motor
all-wheel-drive versions—Macan 4, Macan Turbo—are coming soon. Regardless of
what powers a Macan, you can look forward to its Porsche-appropriate athleticism
blended somewhat unexpectedly with comfortable ride quality in most variants.
Price is a low point, and every Macan is somewhat small, with a tight cabin and
cargo area to match, but if you have the means… [Read more on the Porsche Macan]

13. 2024 PORSCHE MACAN PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Sharp handling
 * Up to 603 hp
 * Quick-charging EV

CONS

 * Base-model output
 * Prices climb rapidly
 * No one-pedal drive on EV

 * Price: $64,895
 * Engine: 2.0L 261-hp/295-lb-ft turbo I-4; 2.9L 375–434-hp/383–405-lb-ft turbo
   V-6; 1 335-hp/415-lb-ft rear elec motor
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 17–19/22–25/19–21 mpg; TBD mpg-e (EV)
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 17–19/48–53 cu ft

12. 2024 ALFA ROMEO STELVIO | MT SCORE: 7.6/10

Do you wish you could buy a sport sedan (or sport wagon) instead of a family
SUV? In the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, you can have both. This is the only Italian SUV
on this list, and it was bred with the same enthusiasm for sporty driving as the
related Giulia sport sedan. There are essentially two flavors: the 280-hp
turbocharged I-4 Stelvio, and the 505-hp twin-turbo V-6 Stelvio Quadrifoglio.
Both come well equipped and deliver satisfying performance. Although the
Stelvio's interior is plain to the point of seeming basic, it’s at least
improved with some tech updates, like a fully digital gauge display now as
standard. [ Read more on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio ]

12. 2024 ALFA ROMEO STELVIO PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Genuinely beautiful SUV
 * Sporty demeanor
 * Improved interior tech

CONS

 * Smallish second-row seats
 * Interior less stylish than exterior
 * Touchy brakes

 * Price: $47,545
 * Engine: 2.0L 280-hp/306-lb-ft turbo I-4; 2.9L 505-hp/443-lb-ft twin-turbo V-6
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 17–22/23–29/19–25 mpg
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 19/57 cu ft

11. 2024 JAGUAR F-PACE | MT SCORE: 7.8/10

Almost an in-betweener, the Jaguar F-Pace straddles the compact and midsize
classes, meaning the F-Pace is physically on the large end of this group. While
that doesn't translate directly into a roomier interior for passengers, the
cargo area is massive, whether the rear seats are folded or not. The Jag's
dimensions are perhaps its least interesting stats. Focus instead on the
F-Pace's sporty dynamics, sport-wagon-on-stilts styling, and impressive
upper-end engine choices. Those powerplant options include a turbocharged and
supercharged mild hybrid inline-six and the SVR model's 542-hp blown V-8. If you
can look past its minimalist interior and can swing an engine beyond the
entry-level four-cylinder option, the F-Pace is worth a look. [ Read more on the
Jaguar F-Pace ]

11. 2024 JAGUAR F-PACE PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Striking looks
 * Luxurious interior,
 * Fun to drive

CONS

 * Desirable engines cost more
 * Pricey options
 * Expensive entry point

 * Price: $58,375
 * Engine: 2.0L 247-hp/269-lb-ft turbo I-4, 3.0L 395-hp/406-lb-ft turbo and
   supercharged I-6; 5.0L 542-hp/516-lb-ft supercharged V-8
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 15–22/21–27/17–24 mpg
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 32/72 cu ft

10. 2024 BUICK ENVISION | MT SCORE: 7.9/10

The Buick Envision was all-new for 2021, and it receives a sleek restyling this
year that brings its look in line with newer Buick SUV models. In both forms, it
marks a serious upgrade over the rather dowdy-looking original that arrived in
U.S. dealerships in 2016. Before you ask, yes, the Envision is made in China and
sent here. An altogether more premium-looking piece, the 2022 Envision comes
with only one engine, a 228-hp turbo-four that punches above its weight, and
either front- or all-wheel drive. Underneath its Buick-y exterior sits the same
platform used by the Cadillac XT4. A high-class Avenir trim is new and marks the
summit of the Envision lineup at a still-affordable mid-$40,000 price point.
[ Read more on the Buick Envision ]

10. 2024 BUICK ENVISION PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Fresh new exterior
 * Lots of standard features
 * Huge display

CONS

 * Is it truly a luxury player?
 * Clattery engine
 * Fussy AWD system

 * Price: $34,745
 * Engine: 2.0L 228-hp/258-lb-ft turbo I-4
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 23/31/26 mpg
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 25/53 cu ft

9. 2024 AUDI Q5 | MT SCORE: 8/10

The Audi Q5 does plenty of crossover things really well, but it doesn't stand
out in any particular way. Perhaps this is because its styling is so familiar
and brand-standard. It is, after all, Audi's bestselling vehicle in the U.S., so
ubiquity is included. The standard four-cylinder engine is more than enough for
most buyers, and if you want sportiness in your compact luxe SUV, competitors
offer more compelling options than the 349-hp turbocharged V-6 SQ5. Every Q5 is
quiet, refined, and otherwise unexciting, though none more so than the plug-in
hybrid model. Audi hasn’t given the Q5 even a minor update in years, having last
adjusted the styling for a little more edge in 2021, and added a Q5 Sportback
model with a swoopier roofline. [ Read more on the Audi Q5 ]

9. 2024 AUDI Q5 PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Strong powertrains
 * Modern interior design
 * Appealing tech

CONS

 * Non-engaging to drive
 * Small cargo volume
 * Tight back seat

 * Price: $46,495
 * Engine: 2.0L 201–261-hp/236–273-lb-ft turbo I-4; 2.0L turbo hybrid I-4, 362
   hp comb; 3.0L 349-hp/369-lb-ft turbo V-6
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 19–23/24–29/21–26 mpg; 50 mpg-e (PHEV)
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 26/54 cu ft

8. 2024 MERCEDES-BENZ GLC-CLASS | MT SCORE: 8.3/10

There's something about the three-pointed star that signals luxury. The
redesigned-for-2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class wears that star proudly, yet it's
the sportier AMG-badged Mercedes-AMG GLC43 with its slick inline-six that really
impresses. Base GLC300s combine a fairly typical-for-the-segment mild hybrid
turbo-four engine with a wagonlike body that’s sleeker than before and a
stylish, posh interior. Although the mechanical package isn't anything special,
the GLC300 is generally refined and Mercedes-like. [Read more on the
Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class]

8. 2024 MERCEDES-BENZ GLC-CLASS PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Great build quality
 * Fun and comfortable
 * Efficient and powerful engine

CONS

 * Too many screens
 * Some driver assists could use work
 * Pinched cargo area

 * Price: $48,600
 * Engine: 2.0L 255-hp/295-lb-ft turbo I-4; 2.0L 416-hp/369-lb-ft turbo I-4
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 19–26/25–33/21–29 mpg
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 22/56 cu ft

7. 2024 VOLVO XC60 | MT SCORE: 8.3/10

Meet the Volvo XC60, the only Swede on this list and the No. 7 ranked compact
luxury crossover in our Ultimate Car Rankings. Think of the Volvo as an
appealing blend of its key competitors, with Swedish minimalism to rival the
Audi Q5's modernist cabin vibe, luxury to go toe to toe with the Mercedes-Benz
GLC-Class, and boxy style on par with the BMW X3. With supremely comfortable
seats, a range of four-cylinder engines topped by a turbocharged, supercharged,
and electrified options (making up to 455 hp), and a nifty vertically oriented
touchscreen, the XC60 does just enough uniquely to stand out without skewing
weird. It is one of the most well-rounded compact luxury SUVs and therefore an
excellent choice. [ Read more on the Volvo XC60 ]

7. 2024 VOLVO XC60 PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Upscale appearance
 * PHEV’s power and range
 * Cargo capacity

CONS

 * Obtuse infotainment
 * Aging design
 * Prices climb fast

 * Price: $48,195
 * Engine: 2.0L 247-hp/258-lb-ft turbo I-4; 2.0L turbo + supercharged hybrid
   I-4, 455 hp comb
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 22/28/25 mpg; 63 mpg-e (PHEV)
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 22/63 cu ft

6. 2024 ACURA RDX | MT SCORE: 8.4/10

The previous Acura RDX was one of the most invisible yet popular vehicles in the
compact luxury SUV segment, which is what makes it so surprising that the newer
one pivots in a much sportier, expressive direction. This isn't entirely new
territory for the RDX ; the original RDX was a wild turbocharged,
torque-vectoring anomaly, but it's much better executed this time around. Every
RDX gets a spunky turbocharged I-4 engine, and Acura's torque-vectoring Super
Handling All-Wheel Drive is available, along with a sporty A-Spec package and
the latest active safety tech. The result is a fun-to-drive, stylish SUV whose
only real black mark is a strange, touchpad-operated infotainment setup. [ Read
more on the Acura RDX ]

6. 2024 ACURA RDX PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Great handling
 * Strong standard features
 * Upscale interior

CONS

 * Finicky infotainment
 * Limited rear visibility
 * Could be quieter

 * Price: $45,700
 * Engine: 2.0L 272-hp/280-lb-ft turbo I-4
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 21/26–27/23 mpg
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 30/59 cu ft

5. 2024 LEXUS NX | MT SCORE: 8.4/10

The Lexus NX is as quiet, refined, and comfy as you'd expect a Lexus to be. This
small SUV's extroverted styling might be its loudest aspect. Otherwise, it
pleases with standard active safety equipment, excellent build quality, a very
efficient NX350h hybrid model and NX450h+ plug-in hybrid, as well. Don't expect
the NX to be overly sporty; with either the standard turbocharged I-4 engine,
optional I-4, or the available hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, it isn't
designed to be exceptionally quick or handle on rails. But it has addressed the
main complaint we had about its infotainment with a new touchscreen interface.
It's also a good value—both at the dealer and for your bank account long-term.
[ Read more on the Lexus NX ]

5. 2024 LEXUS NX PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Myriad powertrain options
 * Excellent cost of ownership
 * Strong safety ratings

CONS

 * Not as sporty as it looks
 * Coarse base engine
 * Basic cabin

 * Price: $41,765
 * Engine: 2.5L 203-hp/184-lb-ft I-4, 2.4L 275-hp/317-lb-ft turbo I-4, 2.5L
   hybrid I-4 240–304 hp comb
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 21–41/28–37/24–39 mpg; 84 mpg-e (PHEV)
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 23/47 cu ft

4. 2024 BMW X3 | MT SCORE: 8.5/10

The clearest indication of how far BMW has strayed from its car-based "ultimate
driving machine" roots is the German company’s SUV lineup. BMW's "Sport Activity
Vehicles," the X3 included, until recently seemed to drive better than its
once-revered sedans and coupes (which have since made solid comebacks—look at
the 2 Series, M2, M3, and M4). That's good news, at least for BMW X3 intenders
who can look forward to the brand's classic ride and handling balance hitched to
one of three excellent turbocharged engine options. Entry-level I-4 X3s are
strong performers, but the I-6 M40i variant is downright quick and incorporates
a sportier suspension and steering setup. (There’s also the high-performance
503-hp X3 M, which is the M40i on steroids.) This capability is wrapped in a
usefully squared-off body that's roomy and benefits from an approachable,
straightforward interior design. For 2025, BMW is introducing an all-new,
totally redesigned X3, which takes on a less traditional appearance. [ Read more
on the BMW X3 ]

4. 2024 BMW X3 PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Blends fun and comfort well
 * Low-key attractive
 * Quick M models

CONS

 * Competition has better value
 * Regular models slow
 * Stiff M suspension

 * Price: $47,895
 * Engine: 2.0L 248-hp/258-lb-ft turbo I-4, 3.0L 382–503-hp/369–457-lb-ft turbo
   I-6
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 15–23/20–29/17–25 mpg
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 29/63 cu ft

3. 2024 LINCOLN CORSAIR | MT SCORE: 8.7/10

Wait, a Lincoln—in third place, among this group of blue-chip luxury SUV
offerings? Ford's upscale brand has made great strides in recent years,
particularly with its latest crop of SUVs, the Corsair included. This
replacement for the MKC remains mechanically similar to the mainstream Ford
Escape, but Lincoln has so thoroughly differentiated the two that you might
never have realized the connection had we not mentioned it here. The Corsair is
100 percent Lincoln, from its luxurious and quiet interior to its handsome
exterior to its Lincoln-exclusive materials and colorways. It also offers a
plug-in hybrid variant with a 32-mile electric-only range. Although not the
sportiest in its class, the Corsair is among the most comfortable—just as a
Lincoln should be. [ Read more on the Lincoln Corsair ].

3. 2024 LINCOLN CORSAIR PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Segment-best hands-free driving
 * Quiet ride
 * Torquey engine

CONS

 * Mixed interior quality
 * Laggy infotainment
 * Unimpressive rear seat

 * Price: $40,385
 * Engine: 2.0L 250-hp/275-lb-ft turbo I-4; 2.5L hybrid I-4 266 hp comb
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 21–22/28–30/24–25 mpg; 80 mpg-e
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 28/58 cu ft

2. 2024 TESLA MODEL Y | MT SCORE: 9.1/10

By now, you shouldn't be surprised to see an electric SUV mixed in with regular,
gas-fed models in our rankings. The time has long since passed for sorting EVs
into their own buckets, apart from mainstream vehicles—because the Tesla Model Y
is a mainstream compact luxury SUV. It simply can be charged up at home or at
one of Tesla's thousands of Superchargers, rather than being filled up at a gas
station. Tesla sells Long Range and Performance versions of the Model Y, with
the former available in 295-hp single-motor, rear-drive guise (320 miles of
range) and the latter laying down 308 miles (and 384 hp!); the Performance
delivers 279 miles (but 456 hp!). [ Read more on the Tesla Model Y ]

2. 2024 TESLA MODEL Y PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Rapid acceleration
 * Supercharger network access
 * Spacious cabin

CONS

 * Mediocre build quality
 * Dubious safety systems
 * No CarPlay

 * Price: $46,380
 * Motors: Induction front + permanent magnet rear; 294–456-hp/310–497-lb-ft
   comb
 * EPA Fuel Econ (city/hwy/comb): 111–122/98–112/105–117 mpg-e
 * Cargo Space (seats up/down): 27–30/68–72 cu ft

1. 2024 GENESIS GV70 | MT SCORE: 9.2/10

What is a Genesis GV70? Why, it was the 2022 MotorTrend SUV of the Year! Should
that reasoning not be enough to convince you the GV70 is the real deal—and our
obvious pick for top of the compact luxury SUV class—allow us to elaborate.
Genesis is the luxury spinoff of Hyundai, and it's been coming into its own in
recent years, first with the G70 sport sedan and then with (finally) an SUV, the
midsize GV80. This GV70 is smaller than the GV80 and even better executed, with
a stylish interior that can be had in unexpected colorways, a strong available
twin-turbo V-6 engine, and solid handling. There’s even an all-electric version.

1. 2024 GENESIS GV70 PROS, CONS, AND SPECS

PROS

 * Gorgeous styling
 * Lots of standard features
 * Luxury at mainstream prices

CONS

 * Not very efficient
 * Optional V-6 not much quicker
 * Confusing shift dial

 * Price: $46,500
 * Engine: 2.5L 300-hp/311-lb-ft I-4; 3.5L 375-hp/391-lb-ft twin-turbo V-6
