I’m Tom from Belgium and I will make sure that your trip to Ecuador or cruise in

a dozen years and have been working in tourism for 8 years now. Before that I
obtained my guides diploma in Ecuador. Traveling and discovering new places is

In South America, Ecuador is one of the smaller countries, but the country is
hugely diverse in terms of geography, climate and population. You can visit the
Andes, the Amazon rainforest as well as the tropical coast without taking
extremely long domestic flights or transfers. And then you have the Galapagos
Islands, a once in a lifetime experience. The diversity of flora and fauna per
square mile is enormous. Ecuador is South America in a nutshell. Moreover, the
country is relatively safe and little visited. The national currency is the USD
and you have a wide choice of direct flights to Quito and Guayaquil from Europe
and the United States.

 * Are you coming to Ecuador only to visit Galapagos? Then it is best to fly
   directly to Guayaquil. You spend the night not far from the airport and fly
   the next day as early as possible to Galapagos, where the guide of the cruise
   ship will meet you and take you to the ship. You can read the rest in our
   chapter on Galapagos.
 * If you want to visit both the mainland and Galapagos, fly into Quito and make
   your overland journey from North to South through the Andes Mountains and
   then fly from Guayaquil to Galapagos. This saves you money and avoids
   duplicate routes.

   the islands and their flora and fauna can be found below.

 * One important road runs through the elongated narrow Andean region: the
   Panamericana. When you arrive in Quito - KLM and IBERIA fly to Quito, make a
   domestic flight to Guayaquil to fly back to Europe from there - you can first
   explore the area of Otavalo and/or the cloud forest of Mindo.
 * On the way south you can visit Cotopaxi (the volcano, the markets and the
   Quilotoa lake) and then travel via Riobamba (the Chimborazo mountain) and/or
   Guamote (the Thursday market and the villages) via Ingapirca (Inca ruins) to
   Cuenca (colonial city and Lake Cajas). You can deviate from that route to
   visit Baños or Chugchilan and Zumbahua with its beautiful indigenous
   villages. From Cuenca you are then quickly in Guayaquil from where you either
   fly home or fly to Galapagos or visit the southern coast

 * There is the Lower Amazon Forest, with some very nice lodges - nature lover's
   paradises - all of which are located in the Natural Parks of Yasuní and
   Cuyabeno and are reachable after a short flight from Quito (to Coca or to
   Lago Agrio) and then sail for a few hours with a motor canoe.
   For several years now, several luxury ships have been sailing along the Rio
   Napo that offer river cruises.
 * And then you have the Upper Amazon Forest, where you can easily reach it by
   car. This area is less interesting for the real nature lover, but is more
   suitable for visiting as a family: the lodges have swimming pools, there are
   excursions of rafting, canyoning, etc. The area around Tena (Archidona,
   Mishualli ) has nice hotels. You then make the following loop: Quito -
   Papallacta - Baeza - Tena - Puyo - Baños. From Baños you travel further south
   through the Andes.

 * Of Ecuador's vast coastal region, only the south is safe to visit. The area
   around Machalilla National Park offers the most opportunities for relaxation
   and wildlife watching. Also in the Park is the island of Isla de la Plata, a
   surrogate for those who do not visit Galapagos.
 * You drive about 3 hours from Guayaquil to Puerto Lopez (the coastal village
   from which the National Park is controlled). But there are also other ways to
   get there, eg from Chimborazo or from Quito and Cotopaxi.

 * We recently put the finishing touches on the design of a totally new trip
   (unique in Ecuador, in our opinion), which will take you around the villages
   and towns of southern Ecuador. The area of Zaruma, Loja and Zamora is very
   beautiful, it is safe to travel there but there are not everywhere good
   hotels and it is not easy to find English-speaking guides. Anyone who feels
   like exploring this "unexplored" region with us is very welcome!
