working at building mutually beneficial research partnerships. For example, have co-authored one paper with Fergus Caskey of the UK Renal Registry, and we are currently applying for UK NIHR funding to develop a Global

  NATIONAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION Application Review
Applicant: Prof MR Davids: Stellenbosch University
Reviewer: Dr J Wetmore

In order to complete this review we require you to agree to a confidentialy
statement as well as indicate your willingness to do the review within the
requested timeframe, or within another timeframe if you are unable to meet the
deadline.

To assist you in deciding whether or not you should continue, find a synopsis of
the applicant below:

Applicant Prof MR Davids Institution Stellenbosch University Department Division
of Nephrology, Department of Medicine Specialisations Nephrology
Personal profile
I am Head of the Division of Nephrology at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg
Hospital. My research interests within the discipline of nephrology focus on
electrolyte and acid-base disorders, and chronic kidney disease (including
end-stage renal disease). In terms of research outputs, my Scopus h-index is 14,
Google Scholar h-index is 17 and i10-index is 23. I have published 45 peer
reviewed articles, co-authored 4 book chapters, published a peer-reviewed
multimedia educational resource and 5 scientific reports. I spent a year
(2000-1) at the University of Toronto as an International Society of Nephrology
Fellow with world expert, Professor Mitch Halperin, studying electrolyte and
acid-base disorders. The ongoing collaboration with Prof Halperin yielded a
number of publications as well as a textbook chapter in the leading nephrology
textbook, Brenner’s The Kidney. I am regularly consulted on difficult cases by
colleagues around the country and abroad and have taught, by invitation, at many
institutions within South Africa and also in Kenya, Ghana, Nepal and the UK. My
expertise in this area, and in the area of renal registries (below), led to an
appointment as an Educational Ambassador of the International Society of
Nephrology and I conducted the visits to Ghana and Nepal in this capacity. Most
recently I was invited to St George’s Hospital, University of London, as the
Kathleeen Valles Visiting Professor for 2016. My interest in programming and
information technology (I obtained formal certification as a ColdFusion®
developer and instructor in 2001) led to the development of a multimedia
e-learning platform to help students and clinicians learn about electrolyte and
acid-base disorders. I subsequently conducted educational research around this
initiative, which led to several publications. I see my scholarly approach to
teaching as complementing my main nephrology research focus areas. I have a keen
appreciation of the power of good epidemiological data. This, and my interest in
IT, led me to establishing a web-based national renal registry for South Africa.
Our early successes were marked by an invitation to present our first data to
Minister of Health, Dr Motsoaledi, and by a request from the African Association
of Nephrology to lead the establishment of an African Renal Registry. This
continental registry has now been launched. It has the potential to make a huge
impact on the health of African patients with kidney disease and will provide a
data-rich platform for publications and for the training of African researchers
in nephrology, public health, epidemiology and biostatistics. My roles include:
Co-chairperson of the SA Renal Registry, Chairperson of the African Renal
Registry, Associate Editor of the African Journal of Nephrology, Secretary of
the SA Renal Society, and Educational Ambassador of the International Society of
Nephrology. My role as an examiner includes the College of Physicians (FCP) Part
I, FCP Certificate in Nephrology (twice as convenor), College of
Anaesthesiology, University of Pretoria (MMed final exams), Stellenbosch
University Department of Anaesthesiology (MMed final exams), Stellenbosch
University Department of Physiology, University of Cape Town (undergraduate
exams). Postgraduate supervision includes 8 completed Masters, 6 ongoing Masters
and 1 ongoing PhD study (as co-supervisor). I have reviewed papers for the
following journals: Advances in Physiology Education, African Journal of
Nephrology, BMJ Case Reports, Cardiovascular Journal of Southern Africa, Case
Reports in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Clinical Journal of the American Society
of Nephrology (CJASN), Clinical Transplantation, Journal of Medical Case
Reports, Nephrology, Physiotherapy Research International, QJM (Quarterly
Journal of Medicine), South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition. As Associate
Editor of the African Journal of Nephrology, I managed the migration of the
Journal from a traditional publication to an online, open access journal with a
new editorial board and the intention of establishing it as an effective vehicle
for nephrology research in Africa. I served as guest editor of a “renal” issue
of the journal, SA Heart (volume 4(3), 2007) and I established the online
version of SA Heart using the Open Journal Systems platform. I see the study of
CKD/ESRD and research around the SA and African registries as my main focus for
the next number of years. In 2015, I organised a very successful workshop in
Cape Town on establishing renal registries for delegates from 11 African
countries, the UK and Brazil. The teaching faculty included Dr Kitty Jager
(Director, European Renal Registry), Dr Fergus Caskey (Director, UK Renal
Registry) and Dr Cecile Couchoud (French registry). Thereafter, I led the
publication of a paper on the new African Renal Registry (A renal registry for
Africa: first steps, Clinical Kidney Journal, 2016) and have just completed an
invited review on ESRD research in developing countries (Strengthening renal
registries and ESRD research in Africa, Seminars in Nephrology, submitted). I am
actively working at building mutually beneficial research partnerships. For
example, have co-authored one paper with Fergus Caskey of the UK Renal Registry,
and we are currently applying for UK NIHR funding to develop a Global Health
Research Group focused on the registry initiatives. I foresee this developing
into a strong, productive collaboration over the coming years.
