Mr Whippy, one of the resident whipbirds at O’Reilly’s, in the middle of one of
his whipping calls. Normally these birds are so hard to spot as they forage in
the undergrowth in dark places. The ones here are very used to people and it’s a
huge treat to be able to see them going about their lives at such close range.

Last weekend we finally went hiking in Lamington National Park in the Gold Coast
Hinterland. I have wanted to come here for so long and no doubt I completely and
utterly loved it!!

As part of the Gondwana Rainforest which is believed to be over 500 million
years old, you totally feel like you’re stepping into the dinosaur era.

It’s funny to think before we ended up moving to Queensland, I always thought
Gold Coast was just about surfers paradise. How little did I know the hinterland
is mind blowing here!

The image is of the fantastic O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat which has
campgrounds, an epic spa, accom, tours, bird feeding and so much more. So many
kids were saying how it was the best day ever, and I was thinking the same too!
Can’t wait to go back here, I think lamington is my favourite national park at
the moment!

As always we filmed our hike, but this time we filmed it on my new iPhone 13 pro
max (apart from the drone shots at the beginning). I think I have to say goodbye
to my GoPro, iphone has won me over for filming . Watch the full video in the

The recent rain filled lightning creek, these cascades were flowing very nicely
and made for a beautiful image.

I can only imagine how amazing thunder and lightning falls are looking down in
the canyon below.

After a long walk the day before we explored the short walks around our room.

Mick's Tower gives a great view of the other trees in the forrest and a nice
look down at the forrest floor. People look so small.

I'd not ventured here before and it's really close to where Tooloona Circuit
rejoins the main track so that will be a good little detour next time we do that

Rainforests, Birdlife, ancient trees, walking tracks, caves, stunning mountain
view and amazing natural environment.

Didn't find the waterfall (which means I'll be going back + I'll be prepared
mentally for a long walk), but loved doing the wobbly canopy walk that reminded
me of lekkiconservationcentre

My friend Jo and I were meant to be on Christmas Island last week, but instead
we went to Killarney, Girraween and O'Reilly's. Christmas Island will have to
wait until next year, but in the meantime I was pretty happy to hang out with
the granite boulders at Girraween and the rainforest birds at O'Reilly's. Those
birds really put on a show for us. Here is Mr Satin Bowerbird peeking out from
behind a tree... one of the best eyes in the bird world, I reckon.

Follow the path.
Amongst the sea of green the browning leaf litter shows the well worn path along
the border track.

Even though we set out with a bus full of people we've only seen a handful of
people the whole day.

All up, with stops for snacks, photos and to admire the view we signed back in
at OReillys after 6 hours of walking, 7.5 hours after leaving that day.

Elabana Falls on the Box Forest Circuit, Lamington National Park (Green
Mountains Section), Scenic Rim / Gold Coast Hinterland.⁠

Distance: 10.1 kms⁠
Time: Allow 4 hrs⁠
Elevation: 275 m⁠
Difficulty: Moderate⁠
.⁠
For the next two weeks I'll be revisiting a few of my favourite shots or
locations around south-east Queensland.⁠
.⁠
First up, its the ever-photogenic Elabana Falls, located on the Box Forest
Circuit in the Green Mountains section of Lamington National Park.⁠
.⁠
Despite being one of the most frequented and photographed waterfalls in the
park, this one never ceases to impress.⁠
.⁠
The multi-tiered falls are especially gorgeous after some recent rain, however
you do need to be very mindful of flooding.⁠
.⁠
The circuit is also packed with a number of other beautiful waterfalls and
classic lush Lamington rainforest.⁠
.⁠

As someone who suffers from motion sickness, the long, windy road up to the
O’Reilly’s can be a nauseating (and harrowing!) experience. But leaving the city

HOW TO GET TO O’REILLY’S

Please Note: Some iPhone Maps will take you towards Binna Burra. This is
incorrect. Instead please type in Kidston Street, Canungra. Once you reach The
Canungra Hotel, Turn on Kidston Street off the main Road in Canungra (Nerang
Beaudesert Road) as it turns into Lamington National Park Road. You will need to
stay on this road as it takes you up the mountain, through the rainforest to
O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. Hint: If you pass O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley
Vineyards you’re heading the right way. Also, please be advised that Duck Creek
Road, which is an alternate road to O'Reilly's - is completely closed. Do not
try and use this road to get to the Retreat.
