YORK TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST – SMOOTHWALL FILTER CASE STUDY

WHAT’S THE BACKGROUND?

York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides healthcare facilities to
over half a million people, covering an area of 3,400 square miles. The Trust
manages six hospitals and employs 8,000 staff across its hospitals and in the
community.

In 2012 York Teaching Hospitals acquired the Scarborough and North East
Yorkshire Healthcare NHS Trust to form a single organisation.

Following the merger, the IT function was consolidated, and the task of network
management and internet security was centralised.

THE CHALLENGE

The Head of IT explained how the policy setting on their previous filtering
solution was too generic meaning that they couldn’t filter with accuracy or
granularity.

“Staff were getting frustrated by the constant blocking of legitimate healthcare
resources. The IT department was also dealing with a large number of unblock
requests – this headache was putting pressure on IT resources needed elsewhere.
With thousands of people regularly using the internet this couldn’t continue.”

HOW SMOOTHWALL HELPED

They were recommend Smoothwall Filter to protect the Trust owned devices which
include a combination of desktops and laptops across multiple sites.

Thanks to Smoothwall Filter the IT department has been able to block sites with
unsuitable content, particularly gambling sites, as well as keeping Facebook use
under control.

What’s more they can now set up specialised filtering policies for individuals
and groups. This is particularly valuable for clinicians because they can now
view information that would be considered inappropriate for an average user.

Since installing Smoothwall the IT department has saved a lot of time previously
occupied by unblocking requests and administration.

The Head of IT told us how impressed he is with the accuracy of Smoothwall’s
