In Japan, the 60th year of life is celebrated as a rebirth or re-entry into
childhood. Sixty years is the full cycle of the Chinese zodiac calendar, which
was adopted for use in Japan starting in the year 604.

CULCON is established through discussions between President Kennedy and Prime
Minister Ikeda.

1970s

PLENARY SESSIONS

CULCON convenes five plenary sessions to focus on education, media, Japanese
studies, American studies and libraries.

1980s

CULCON GRASSROOTS

CULCON emphasizes grassroots and regional exchanges as vital to the U.S.-Japan
relationship.

1990s

CULCON SECRETARIATS

CULCON establishes permanent secretariats in Washington, DC and Tokyo to
actively implement recommendations.

2000s

TECHNOLOGY

CULCON focuses on ways technology can enhance people-to-people exchange.

2010s

STUDENT MOBILITY AND ARTS EXCHANGE

CULCON makes significant impact on U.S.-Japan student mobility and arts exchange

U.S. CULCON has had 12 chairs, only one of whom has been female (Dr. Sheila
Smith, currently serving).
