INSIDE A 850-SQUARE-FOOT WEST VILLAGE PAD WHERE WHITE PAINT IS BANNED

Sebastian Zuchowicki brings warmth and charm to his home-office apartment

belongings and collectible items on loan from various vendors.

When Sebastian Zuchowicki launched his own interior design firm in 2020, he
worked remotely from the Manhattan apartment he shared with a roommate,
presenting his ideas over Zoom. But as he hired employees and the world came
back to life, he wanted a place to collaborate with his team and meet with
clients in person. Instead of juggling two leases, he decided to combine his
personal and professional budgets to rent an entire floor of an 1886
Georgian-style West Village town house, which he’s transformed into a warm,
850-square-foot home-office hybrid.

Sebastian’s primary goal was creating an inspiring, productive work environment.
“I wanted it to be a place where my team would be happy to come to every morning
and could feel like it’s their second home,” he says. “I wanted it to be
comfortable and, at the same time, pragmatic for the job we have to do. We need
a lot of storage. We have samples everywhere. It is usually chaos in here.
There’s always something that’s coming in and something going out.”

Sebastian’s go-to wall color is Jute by Benjamin Moore—but 25% lighter. He finds
it’s the ideal midpoint between gray and beige.

A Charlotte Perriand coffee table mingles with a Pierre Paulin armchair and a
Pierre Jeanneret stool, all vintage from Raisonné.

Despite the hubbub, the vibe is relaxed and inviting in the living room, which
comprises a sitting area and a desk zone. Original features like high ceilings
and decorative moldings give the space historical character, while neutral-toned
plaster walls add coziness and texture. “My rule is I don’t like white paint,”
shares Sebastian. “I wanted it to feel warm and charming, and I thought layering
it with matte plaster would really bring that.”

Sebastian also refinished the wood floors with a darker stain. “They were this
super high-gloss cherry kind of wood—horrifying,” he remembers. “I thought the
dark floors give that energy of seriousness. If this is a place I’m bringing
clients to, I want it to feel refined. And also it’s an office. I want it to
feel like there is some sort of order when you walk in. It looks like an
atelier, not an apartment.”

“When we moved in here, the first thing we figured out was our desk,” shares
Sebastian. “That was our biggest priority. We have this woodworker; he’s
absolutely fantastic. His name is Santiago Salgado. And we came up with a custom
drawing of a table—it’s 110 feet long. The top is all one veneer, so there are
no seams going through it. We wanted something simple, easy for us to work on,
and comfortable.”

Once these light-touch yet impactful updates were made, Sebastian furnished the
room with collectible items, many of which are on loan from vendors and
available for his clients to purchase. A 1930s forest green André Arbus rug from
Beauvais, for example, currently sits atop his sisal rug for an upcoming
project; an aluminum Jean Prouvé wall panel that belongs to Raisonné hangs above
his velvet sofa. “Instead of taking our clients to galleries, we show them how
pieces look in a residential space,” he explains.

Other treasures, like the 1950s French armchairs and the midcentury Gino
Sarfatti floor lamp, are Sebastian’s own investments. And when he couldn’t
afford to splurge, he got creative: He framed a limited edition Ed Ruscha silk
scarf from Gagosian and hung it up. “We’re not printing fake art here,” he
explains. “That is super cheesy. It’s not who we are. But there was a series of
a thousand scarves, so I thought that would be special and fun.”

Sebastian custom designed the long, streamlined, oak veneer desk with furniture
maker Santiago Salgado, then paired it with vintage Jean Prouvé chairs and a
playful ceramic light sculpture by French artist Adélie Ducasse. A floating
shelf hangs above for displaying mood boards and samples.

“I don’t cook,” Sebastian reveals. “I can make you the most beautiful kitchen in
the world, but I just don’t like cleaning and I don’t like touching raw chicken.
It isn’t for me. My team makes coffee there in the morning and that’s pretty
much it.”

Since Sebastian doesn’t cook, his compact kitchen is his “Carrie Bradshaw
moment,” in that it’s primarily used for making coffee and storing extra
materials. It still had to look chic, though, so he combined black Roman clay
walls with stainless-steel counters and a charcoal linen undersink skirt. “The
kitchen is right there when you come inside, so you’re walking into this super
dark, moody space,” he describes. “The visibility is really low, which I like.”

The primary bedroom is dramatic too, with deep green plaster walls, a
terra-cotta Ivan Da Silva Bruhns rug, and bamboo blinds. A vintage Jean Prouvé
desk is situated opposite the monastic-style bed, which stands in front of a
folding wood screen crafted by George Vincent, a leftover from Sebastian’s the
James Bradley hotel project. “I make my bed every single morning just because I
want it to feel more like a showroom rather than someone’s home,” he says. It
definitely does.

A Noguchi ceiling lamp hangs in the cozy, moody bedroom.

“When I designed a hotel in New Jersey, I did all these wood screens behind the
beds—very French Deco—and we had an extra one,” Sebastian says. “The client was
really sweet and just gave it to me as a gift.”

Sebastian often works at the vintage Jean Prouvé desk in his bedroom, while his
teammates operate from the living room.
