HOW MUCH MONEY CAN I MAKE? Money and Lifestyle are probably the two biggest
factors that draw people to the yacht brokerage industry. The lifestyle is very
easy to achieve once you are on the inside, since cocktail parties and yacht
hops are a regular part of the brokerage agenda. The money is far harder to come
by though, and this chapter will explain how brokers are paid, and just how much
you should expect to make. The world’s most successful yacht brokers are multi
millionaires, a limited few even owning their own yacht. The potential to make
money as a yacht broker is very great indeed, but once again it is important to
set your expectations from the very beginning to understand what you need to do
to achieve that kind of success. The standard commissions charged by a brokerage
for a pre-owned yacht are: 10% for the first $10,000,000 5% for the second
$10,000,000 2.5% for every $10,000,000 thereafter. So a $30,000,000 yacht could
potentially return a commission of $1,000,000 + $500,000 + $250,000 A total of
$1,750,000 For new build yachts the standard commission varies from 5% - 10%
depending on the size and value of the yacht. The more the yacht costs, the more
likely that a 5% commission will apply. Many large brokerage companies will
offer a junior broker the possibility of receiving a small wage + controlled
expenses and in return they will offer a small percentage of the commission
payment on a sale back to the broker. The amount that they offer varies
massively according to the part of the world that you live in, your experience,
and your contact base. For that reason I can’t give a realistic level that you
should expect for the basic wage, but I would most certainly advise you to
insist upon expenses being covered for Boat Shows and travelling to view yachts
and meet clients. It is also reasonable to expect some sort of office space,
access to a computer, and your telephone bill being covered. Don’t expect a
corner office overlooking the port of Monaco just yet though, you may be
surprised by the cramped conditions that even large brokerage houses offer to
their brokers. The percentage that the brokerage company will pay you from a
sale varies too, but is easier to give you a guideline on. Somewhere between 10%
and 20% seems to be the industry standard. At this point it is very important to
understand that on the hypothetical $30,000,000 yacht that you hypothetically
sold for a hypothetic commission of $1,750,000 you are highly unlikely to be
paid $350,000...even though that is 20% of the full commission. Other factors
usually come into play that will affect your commission, and you need to be
prepared for that: 1. The Negotiation A yacht owner once said to me that a
successful negotiation usually results in the buyer paying a little bit more
than he wanted to and the seller receiving a little bit less than he wanted.
Everybody comes away disappointed. Regretfully this often applies to the broker
too, who may have to show some flexibility in his or her expectations in order
to make the sale happen. Having said that, it is very difficult indeed to find a
buyer for a yacht - especially one of such a high value, and you should NEVER
undersell the value that you are bringing to the seller by finding somebody who
is willing to pay so much money for such a frivolous object as a yacht. Just as
a guideline...and I have no particular yacht in mind with this example...a yacht
with a $30,000,000 price tag may end up selling for $25,0000,000 returning a
commission of $1,625,000 to the brokerage of ($1,000,000 + $500,000 + $125,000).
This would give a net figure to the seller of $23,375,000. The seller may have
hoped to achieve $24,000,000 as a net figure so you may be able to to find a
middle ground between the two figures or you may have to cut your losses and
remember that a 20% of a million dollar commission is still a substantial amount
of money. Much will depend upon your ability to negotiate and the brokerage
companies disposition to reduce their commission. 2. The other Broker! The vast
majority of yachts that are sold when brokerage companies cooperate, with one
broker representing the seller and another one representing the buyer. When this
happens the commission is divided between the two companies. A Buyer’s broker
would usually expect 60% of the commission. This is because he will have put the
work into effectively “selling” the yacht to his client, showing it to him,
answering his questions, providing a contract, and facilitating the deal
sometimes by acting as stakeholder for the funds. In the event that you are
representing the Seller of the aforementioned $30,000,000 yacht, and another
broker brings the buyer, and the commission is reduced to $1,000,000 in order to
make the deal happen...your brokerage company would receive a commission of
$400,000 of which you would be entitled to 20%, or $ 80,000.

YACHT

A yacht /ˈjɒt/ is a recreational boat or ship. The term originates from the
Dutch word jacht "hunt", and was originally defined as a light fast sailing
vessel used by the Dutch navy to pursue pirates and other transgressors around
and into the shallow waters of the Low Countries. After its selection by Charles
II of England as the vessel to carry him to England from the Netherlands for his
restoration in 1660, it came to be used to mean a vessel used to convey
important persons.

Modern use of the term designates two different classes of watercraft, sailing
and power boats. Yachts differ from working ships mainly by their leisure
purpose, and it was not until the rise of the steamboat and other types of
powerboat that sailing vessels in general came to be perceived as luxury, or
recreational vessels. Later the term came to encompass motor boats for primarily
private pleasure purposes as well.

Yacht lengths generally range from 10 metres (33 ft) up to dozens of meters
(hundreds of feet). A luxury craft smaller than 12 metres (39 ft) is more
commonly called a cabin cruiser or simply a cruiser. A superyacht generally
refers to any yacht (sail or power) above 24 m (79 ft) and a megayacht generally
refers to any yacht over 50 metres (164 ft). This size is small in relation to
typical cruise liners and oil tankers.

Oregon, currently based in Los Angeles, California. The core group consists of
Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, but expands to include Rob "Bobby Birdman"
Kieswetter and Jeffrey Brodsky as touring members.

Yacht has released albums on States Rights Records, Marriage Records, DFA
Records, and Downtown Records.

HISTORY

EARLY HISTORY

Bechtolt chose the name Yacht in reference to Y.A.C.H.T., an alternative school
in Portland, Oregon. Bechtolt told Spin, "It stands for Young Americans
Challenging High Technology. It refers to an education program that was held in
Portland, Oregon. I was enrolled when I was 16, back in 1996."

2002–2008

Yacht was Bechtolt's solo project from 2002 to 2008. During this period, he
released three albums, Super Warren MMIV, Mega and I Believe in You. Your Magic
Is Real, on record labels in the Pacific Northwest area.
