How can I treat my calf injury? Healing of a calf muscle usually takes about 6-8
weeks however everyone recovers from injury at different rates. The rate of
healing of your muscle will depend on how severe your injury is as well as any
other medical problems you may already have.

How do you treat a calf muscle injury? Rest your injured leg. Put ice or a cold
pack on the sore muscle for 10 to 20 minutes at a time to stop swelling. After 2
or 3 days, you can try alternating cold with heat. Wrap your lower leg with an
elastic bandage (such as an Ace wrap) to help decrease swelling.

Watch how you walk, and see if you can bear weight on the injured leg. Test the
different calf muscles for weakness. Look for swelling or bruising. Gently feel

(palpation).

Grade II calf strain: Moderate discomfort with walking, and limited ability to
perform activities, such as running and jumping; may have swelling and bruising
associated.

Symptoms. A calf strain usually starts with sudden pain in the back of the lower
leg. A pop, snap or tearing sensation may be felt. Occasionally, with a severe
tear, it may feel like you have been shot in the back of the leg.

A feeling of tightness, tenderness, or weakness in the calf area. Spasms (a
gripping or severe tightening in the calf muscle). Sharp pain in the back lower

it can still walk or move around. It typically takes 1-3 weeks to fully heal.

problems, such as muscle tears or ankle sprains.








WHAT IS A GRADE 3 CALF TEAR?

all of the calf muscle. Crutches or even a moon boot may be required to enable
walking due to severe pain and weakness. Immediate swelling and bruising will be
present within 24 hours.
