7 FACTS ABOUT HUMAN REFLEXES

Romana D'Souza
Updated on Apr 08, 2015, 07:00 IST

Reflexes are involuntary or automatic actions that your body does in response to
something. Reflexes occur with us even having to think about them. There are
different types of reflexes and every person has them. In fact, humans are born
with most of them.

Reflexes protect the body from things that can harm it. For example, if you
touch a hot stove, a reflex makes you immediately withdraw your hand before the
message even gets to your brain.

Here are some fascinating facts about human reflexes.

7 Facts about Human Reflexes

The mammalian diving reflex is a phenomenon that allows a person to remain
underwater for extended periods of time. This reflex is greatly exhibited in
aquatic mammals, but has also been reported in humans. The mammalian diving
reflex is triggered only when cold water contacts the face.

When a person’s face hits cold water, the diving reflex is immediately triggered
in an effort to maximise oxygen output. The heart rate of the person slows down
by 10-25 percent and their blood flow is constricted to their extremities.

This reflex helps prevent drowning and functions even if the person is
unconscious before falling into the water.

frequently been reported by men and a small percentage of women.

7 Facts about Human Reflexes

Goose bumps materialise on a person’s skin when it’s cold or they experience a
powerful emotional reaction like fear, melancholy, pleasure, awe, or sexual
arousal. Goose bumps get their name from geese. The feathers of geese grow from
stores in the epidermis which are like human follicles. When feathers are
plucked, the goose’s skin develops protrusions. These protrusions resemble the
human phenomenon.
