By Johnnie St. Vrain |
PUBLISHED: May 1, 2022 at 4:08 p.m. | UPDATED: May 2, 2022 at 9:36 a.m.

Dear Johnnie: What is the status of the cell towers constructed on U.S. 36
between Lyons and Estes Park? The masts went up last summer, and the cable has
been buried, but there are no antennas yet. Did Crown Castle go broke or abandon
the project? — JR, Pinewood Springs

Dear JR: The towers are there, but the cell service is not. And no, Crown Castle
has not gone broke or abandoned the project.

Speaking with someone at Crown Castle does require a little creativity, though.
The online “Media Bundle” provides no contact information, and when I emailed
the manager of marketing communications, I received an “unsubscribe please”
reply.

So I tried Crown Castle’s main number. Without an option for “general
inquiries,” I pressed 2 “to inquire about becoming a new Crown Castle customer,”
and someone picked up the call right away.

When I explained what it was I wanted to know, the friendly fellow on the other
end — who would not give me his name — told me that “Crown Castle owns and
operates over 40,000 cell towers. We do business with all the wireless carriers.
As far as who’s going on (the U.S. 36 infrastructure) and when, (that’s not
public).”

That information, he said, is for shareholders.

However, he did share with me enough information to make sense of this, which is
that Crown Castle is waiting to do business with or at least announce that it is
doing business with wireless carriers — probably one or more of the big four —
to use this network that’s been installed.

So, JR, the next move likely is up to Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and/or Sprint.
