MEET DECISION-MAKERS FROM SUB-SAHARA AFRICA

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), in collaboration with Rand
Merchant Bank (RMB), will bring public and private sector decision-makers
together to discuss the enabling environment of cross-border payments across the
African continent. By highlighting key challenges around money laundering,
greylisting, and due diligence relating to payment processing across the African
continent, the conference will highlight the key measures required to improve
financial inclusion across African markets. Improvements in governance, leading
to increased access to hard currency in African countries, will unlock further
USD-denominated trade flows in the region. Various payment processing mechanisms
will be showcased, spanning across fintechs to banks, as well as featuring RMB’s
Africa Gateway payment processing solution. In addition to banks, fintechs,
regulators, and U.S. government officials, U.S. software providers will be
present, demonstrating capabilities and the latest developments in payment
processing technologies.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The South African energy sector is set to undergo significant changes over the
coming decades. The country’s heavy reliance on coal has led South Africa to be
the fourteenth largest producer of greenhouse gases and the most
carbon-intensive electricity producer in the world. South Africa is committed to
decreasing coal usage in favor of more renewable energy solutions in the coming
years. Eskom, the state-owned power utility, aims to achieve carbon neutrality
by 2050 with an increasing emphasis on wind, solar, and hydropower generation.

Green hydrogen is a focused solution related to renewable energy that would
significantly reduce CO2 emissions, while providing reliable energy and
feedstocks. South Africa is uniquely suited to benefit from green hydrogen to
become a leader in pioneering a fuel of the future.Green hydrogen opportunities
are only expected to increase as new renewable energy is added to the grid. The
Government of South Africa has defined its clean energy priorities, signaling
potential market opportunities in the near-term and an improved business climate
for green investments. Under its plan, Round 6 of the Renewable Energy
Independent Power Producer Programme will double the procurement of wind and
solar projects. Eskom has launched a tender to secure 1,400 megawatt hours of
energy storage capacity, both the increased renewable generation and energy
storage capacity will complement the green hydrogen economy.
