Register Now BACKGROUND INFORMATION The South African energy sector is set to undergo significant changes over the coming decades. The country’s heavy reliance on coal has led South Africa to be the fourteenth largest producer of greenhouse gases and the most carbon-intensive electricity producer in the world. South Africa is committed to decreasing coal usage in favor of more renewable energy solutions in the coming years. Eskom, the state-owned power utility, aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 with an increasing emphasis on wind, solar, and hydropower generation. Green hydrogen is a focused solution related to renewable energy that would significantly reduce CO2 emissions, while providing reliable energy and feedstocks. South Africa is uniquely suited to benefit from green hydrogen to become a leader in pioneering a fuel of the future.Green hydrogen opportunities are only expected to increase as new renewable energy is added to the grid. The Government of South Africa has defined its clean energy priorities, signaling potential market opportunities in the near-term and an improved business climate for green investments. Under its plan, Round 6 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme will double the procurement of wind and solar projects. Eskom has launched a tender to secure 1,400 megawatt hours of energy storage capacity, both the increased renewable generation and energy storage capacity will complement the green hydrogen economy.
