PRODUCT REVIEW: CARVER SKATEBOARD – C7 TRUCKS – SURF THE LAND!

October 30, 2014October 30, 2014 / laurajanescully / Leave a comment

I’ve been passionate about water and all things board sports since I was a young
kid. Until 15, you could regularly find me skating around my village, popping
ollies (about the only trick I perfected) and really pretending to carve up the
street. As far as I was concerned, this was the closest I could get to surfing.
I can’t remember what happened to my skateboards, but at some point I ‘grew up’
put the boards away and that was that…..or so I thought.

As a member of the midlands biggest and best SUP club, Central SUP, I get to
enjoy trying out new and emerging products including land paddles, which have
been kindly loaned to the club. Land Paddling really took me back to my
skateboarding days! One evening I found myself casually browsing the internet to
relive my skating youth, when the guys at the SUP HUT tipped me off about Carver
Skateboards and in particular, their C7 trucks.

Carver are a US company set up in the mid-1990s by a couple of surfers who,
after a winter enjoying the waves, found themselves disappointed by the flat
summer spells (they obviously hadn’t discovered SUP at this point). They began
experimenting with their skateboards and eventually came up with a prototype for
a new type of truck that is spring loaded with a rotating arm. This rotating arm
allows the rider to effectively gain momentum by pumping the board, in exactly
the same way as you would on a wave.

So after much research (I do love researching!), I bought myself a Carver
Fraktal and one sunny afternoon, took it down to my local park.

CARVING UP THE PAVEMENT

After spending just 5-10 minutes getting the technique right, I felt like a kid
in a sweet shop as I twisted and turned the board through the park. I spent a
good 2-3 hours boarding and the time flew by. You know when you were out playing
as a kid and your Mum calls you in for tea and you’re like ‘it can’t be that
time already’ – well that’s how it was. This board is so well designed that you
literally feel like you’re surfing. You have to work your body to get that
forward momentum but the motion that you make to move the board is exactly the
same as you’d do in surfing.

I’ve given the board to a few other surfers to try out over the last month and
their feedback has been the same, in fact, pretty much every person that has
tried it has told me they have to go out and buy one!

THE MOST FUN WORKOUT… AFTER SUP!

After just half an hour playing on the Carver – my ass, back and legs feel sore
and tired – I know I’ve worked hard but it is fun. Would you say the same after
a workout in the gym?

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER WITH A LAND PADDLE

With the Carver board, the only thing that I miss is having a paddle in my
hand and the perfect solution to this is the land paddle.

With land paddling, you take to a skateboard with a land paddle in hand and
propel yourself forward in exactly the same way as you would with a paddle in
SUP. The sport is growing across the UK and I’m seeing many SUPers using land
paddling for cross-training and as an alternative when SUP isn’t available. I
love land paddle that much, that I’ll dedicate a post to this amazing new sport
later in the year.

This winter, at Central SUP were looking to incorporate land paddling as a nice
cross trainer / sport for SUP. Our members love trying the land paddle out and
so do I! When it’s dry, I’m going to be land paddling around the park this
winter, with my carver board….watch out!

INTERESTED IN GETTING YOUR OWN CARVER?

If you’re interested in the Carver – I’d recommend you visit The SUP HUT in
Swansea. They’re one of the best SUP shops in the UK, they stock the Carver
board and ship throughout the UK.

Come and join me for a Land Paddle this winter!

RECIPE: BULLETPROOF COFFEE

September 25, 2014September 30, 2014 / laurajanescully / Leave a comment

About a year ago, I experienced an intense one-month where I moved house,
suffered a family bereavement, had surgery on my stomach and to top it all off I
started an exciting new job.  Up until that point, I’d been comfortably
competing in SUP, running, doing SUP training, whilst feeling good and having no
issues with tiredness or brain fog.

Having everything going on at once, had an impact on my body that I hadn’t
expected and it’s taken me a year (I’m not there yet either) to recover. Within
a few weeks, I’d started to feel tired all day, suffering from continuous
viruses and started to feel like my body was struggling. So I retreated from my
usual activities and since then, have poured my energy into what Americans would
term as ‘bio-hacking’ – meaning basically, trying to find effective ways to
maximise the body’s / mind’s performance. The process has been like opening
pandora’s box – it’s a never ending experiment that gets you considering
everything from your sleep patterns, to your diet, to the mold that grows in
your house – and believe me, there is a tonne of weird stuff out there!

One of the first ‘discoveries’ I made and one that I want to share today because
it’s had such a positive impact on me is Bulletproof coffee. I stumbled across a
website run by Dave Asprey, did some of my own research and as an avid coffee
drinker (although I’d stopped at that point and switched to Matcha Tea) I bought
some of his Upgrade Coffee Beans, MCT brain octane oil and decided to give it a
whirl.

What is Bulletproof Coffee:

Bulletproof coffee is a blend of high quality coffee beans (carefully produced
to eliminate toxins and mold), MCT oil and grass fed unsalted butter. Sounds
yuck right? Well, it’s inventor claims that it’s one of the best ways to start
your day, can keep you feeling full for 8-hours and will give you great mental
clarity.

The quality of the beans, will not only mean your coffee tastes great, but your
body isn’t taking in that nasty mold that grows on 95% of coffee beans and are
known to cause the jittery coffee buzz and subsequent crash. The MCT oil
(medium-chain triglycerides) – it’s a form of fat! But the type of fat that it
is, means that the body rapidly metabolizes it into ketones, providing instant
energy to the brain without breaking down glucose from dietary sugars or
carbohydrates. The butter – well, that makes the coffee taste creamy and is
another healthy fat source – although I don’t add it as I don’t eat dairy (one
of the first things I gave up after starting my research).

What Bulletproof Coffee does for me and why you might want to try it:

Well despite what you might think, it’s tastes delicious! Immediately after my
first cup, I noticed the lack of the jittery, itchy & warm coffee buzz that I
normally get. I also felt that my usual morning brain fog lifted.

But after about 4 hours (twice as long as normal for me), I did feel slightly
peckish and whilst I wasn’t as hungry, I did still eat a light lunch. I also had
fairly stable energy levels throughout the day. That’s been about the same since
I started Bulletproof coffee in March. If I’m not at work, I have bulletproof
for breakfast and then my body doesn’t need food again until dinner time.

What I wasn’t expecting were the following benefits:

 1. I started to lose weight, which feels counterintuitive because I am
actually drinking fat. I’m a slim woman, but I noticed that I was able to
get away with more of the naughty treats that would I normally wouldn’t.
Unfortunately, this has made me eat more naughty treats!
 2. The most surprising benefit and the reason it’s on my blog today, is the
impact on my exercise. I usually run 10km on a Sunday morning and what I’ve
found is that if I go about half an hour after a cup of bulletproof coffee
that I have more energy, like there are more natural stores within my body
to push harder. My 5km split is down from 29 minutes to 27 minutes and my
10km times are regularly at 56 minutes.
 3. I sleep a lot better and I’m wide awake every day at 6am. I have no idea why
this is but I am not complaining!

Making PROPER bulletproof coffee:

The true bulletproof ‘way’ recommends that you use a metal filter or french
press to brew your coffee.

 1. To enjoy the benefits you really have to start with the best coffee you can
find. I started with bulletproof then switched to a load of different brands
and came straight back to bulletproof coffee, because the other brands did
not leave me feeling anywhere as good and in some cases, made me sick. I’d
recommend you take a look at Evolution Organics and Functional Self to try
out the products for yourself – Amazon is expensive. Oh, and you’ll need a
grinder to grind your coffee beans.
 2. Boil filtered water – I’m like most people and don’t have a filter
on my kettle, so I’m just sure to keep mine clean.
 3. Once brewed, pour a small amount of coffee over your measured amount of MCT
/ Brain octane oil and/or butter in a cup. Now the MCT oil can cause
diarrhoea if you OD, so start low and work your way up. I have about a table
spoon, that’s enough for my 9st (?) frame.
 4. Using a small electric whisk or milk frother, blend the coffee and the oils
together. It makes a very frothy and foamy drink. I whisk together a small
amount so that it doesn’t go everywhere and then after it’s mixed and is
still whirling around the cup, you can add the rest of the coffee.
 5. Enjoy!

If you’re thinking of giving the recipe a try, then I would recommend that you
do some reading over at Bulletproof Exec. I’m not a nutritionalist or qualified
health expert but I do like to share a good recipe when I find one, particularly
one that has had a positive impact on my health.

If you know me and you want to try a cup without forking out for the
ingredients, let me know and I’ll brew you a cup some time.

SUP GEEK: 5 WAYS TO PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR WETSUIT

July 2, 2014July 2, 2014 / laurajanescully / Leave a comment

I LOVE my wetsuits, they keep me warm in the water and the right one makes you
look super awesome! However, they can be very expensive and after a tough SUP
session, it’s all too easy to just rip the thing off (often easier said than
done) and hang it over the car or a washing line to dry, or worse let it fester
in a heap. After years of hard wear, they often end up torn, wearing holes
(usually in the knees and shoulders) and it’s soon time to fork out another
couple of hundred quid for a new one.

By following just a few good disciplines, you can keep your wetsuit fresh, clean
and in one piece for a very long time and save yourself a heap of cash!

1)        RINSE

When you get your wetsuit home, you should rinse it inside or chuck it in a BIG
bucket and soak the thing. Come winter or summer, when I get home I just get the
hose out and soak everything inside and out. This simply rinses of salt water or
river water that will destroy your wetsuit over time. Neoprene hates heat – so
always use cold water.

2)        P!$S OFF!

It’s about £6.99 for Ripcurl’s wetsuit shampoo – named ‘P!$s off. It smells like
Vicks vapour rub and it cleans your neoprene, acts as an anti-bacterial and
helps to get rid of any nasty smells. After every few months of wear or at the
end of a season, I stick a capful (or two) in a bucket of cold water, chuck in
my wetsuit and then get scrubbing away with just my hands. Make sure you go over
the hard to reach areas and the zips. After you’ve washed it in this stuff, you
don’t need to rinse the wetsuit, simply hang it up.

3)        ENSURE IT’S WELL HUNG!

There are a few different opinions on hanging a wetsuit. The main idea is to
reduce neoprene stress. When it’s drying hang it inside out, then flip it so
that it’s the right way for putting on and let it dry on the outside too. I only
use one kind of hanger (a strong suit hanger) as it supports the shoulders in
the suit (these tend to be the first things to go). No metal hangers or thin
hangers should be used, if you don’t have a good suit hanger then go out and buy
one. Some people advise you to fold it, because hanging puts pressure on the
shoulders, but I think folding just creases the neoprene and this reduces the
wetsuits ability to do its job effectively.

4)        AVOID THE SUN AND ALL HEAT IN GENERAL

Neoprene hates the sun, it will boil your wetsuit and destroys the neoprene
faster than anything else. So don’t stick it in the washing machine, don’t stick
it in the dryer, don’t leave it in a hot car and NEVER hang it up in the sun.
Also, DON”T pee in it. SUPers tend not to because we’re standing and we would
just look freaking bizarre but it’s a tendency for surfers to pee in their suit
to keep warm and prevent a trip back in. What most people know is that pee
stinks, it makes your wetsuit stink and because you’re in the wetsuit…you stink!
Less known is that pee contains acids that destroy your neoprene.

5)        WEAR A PLASTIC BAG

It can be hard to put a wetsuit on, the neoprene is designed to take stress but
you can make life for your wetsuit and yourself a bit easier by wearing a
plastic bag over your feet and hands as you slip into your wetsuit. This reduces
friction and makes the suit just glide on. I always keep a stash of carrier bags
in my SUP accessories kit.

SUP GEEK: 5 STEPS TO TRANSFORM YOUR SUP BOARD HANDLE

June 21, 2014June 21, 2014 / laurajanescully / Leave a comment

Ever struggled with the handle on your SUP board? Particularly those older &
heavier models? There’s nothing worse in SUP, than walking back with your board
after a long exhausting paddle, only to keep losing your grip and having to stop
every 15 metres. There are carry straps out there (I have one) but half the time
you’re not going far enough to warrant putting them on and you just wish you had
a better designed SUP handle or a better grip. My current SUP also suffers from
having the handle installed away from the balancing point, which makes carrying
it even more of a challenge. I couldn’t combat a badly balanced handle position
but after stumbled upon a product called Sugru, I realised I might be able to
address the handle design.

SUGRU – DUCT TAPE FOR GEEKS

Sugru describe their product as a ‘self-setting rubber that can be formed by
hand’. Open a packet and it looks and feels like play dough, mould it into your
desired form then leave it overnight and it becomes a hard and tough silicone
like substance that is water resistant and can withstand extreme environments.
It’s been hailed as the new miracle product capable of fixing everything from
washing machines, to water sprinklers to fixing dings on your surfboard. So I
ordered some online and decided to give this stuff a go on my un-ergonomic SUP
board handle…..

TRANSFORM YOUR BOARD HANDLE FOR LESS THAN A TENNER!

1. Get yourself some sugru.

I ordered 8 packets for about £10 and I’ve kept the remaining packets in my SUP
box in case I need for an emergency ding repair.  I used about 2 packets on my
board.

2. Clean and lightly sand your existing board handle.

Once it’s ‘cured’, Sugru forms a silicone-like rubber grip, which makes it
non-slip. But it’ll only work well if the surface you’re working with is clear
of sand, water and dirt. So give your handle a good clean and sand it down a
little to give the Sugru something to bond well with.

3. Get molding.

When you take it out of it’s packet, Sugru is like play dough. I stuck it
straight on my board’s handle and played around for about an hour, trying to
create a comfortable lip that I could get my fingers under. I then got my
partner to have a check that he could still put his big man hands into the
handle.

4. Leave it to cure for 24-hours.

Try not to use the handle before it’s cured – because that will just mess up all
your hard work.

5. Add more if you need to.

The trick I found worked best is to build it up slowly. You don’t want to put
too much on, only to find you have to rip it all off and start again. Once
you’re done, you should have a nice grippy handle that improves your trips from
the car to the ocean, saving your fingers and arms.
