RESEARCH RADAR: THE PEACEMAKING MACHINE? HOW AI CAN HELP HUMANS FIND COMMON
GROUND IN DEMOCRATIC DELIBERATION

Researchers at Google DeepMind tested an AI system called the "Habermas Machine"
with over 5,700 UK participants to see if it could help groups find common
ground on controversial issues. The AI system proved more effective than human
mediators at generating consensus statements that groups could agree on, while
successfully preserving minority viewpoints. This has exciting implications in
our era of hyper-partisanship. While this research demonstrates AI's potential
to make democratic deliberation more efficient and fair and foster consensus
building, it also raises questions about whether academic focus on deliberation
itself, rather than practical problem-solving, best serves public needs.

USING AI? LEARN HOW, SAYS THE ABA TO LAWYERS IN A FORMAL OPINION

Yesterday the American Bar Association published a formal opinion, declaring
that under the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, lawyers using generative
AI have a “duty of competence” to develop an “understanding of the evolving
nature of GAI.” This is why InnovateUS is launching a new GenAI for Public
Lawyers course this fall. My takeaway on the opinion: the ABA is recognizing the
benefits of GAI but is requiring lawyers to: 1) Obtain truly informed consent
from the client, explaining all the risks involved, 2) Ensure no confidential
information is input into a GAI system, 3)Thoroughly verify all outputs for
accuracy, and 4) Use GAI for general tasks that don't involve specific client
information.

THE ARMS RACE IN ASSISTIVE AI

The advice "Write the first draft you want someone to send" is now being applied

highlight in the MIT Tech Review how AI could amplify this practice, allowing
lobbyists to analyze US law comprehensively, draft legislation more efficiently,
and potentially infiltrate law-making at various levels. While AI presents
opportunities for both exploitation and improvement in legislative processes,
the need for investment in these technologies to support quality lawmaking and
public accountability is critical, facing the challenge of misuse by those
