The numbers increase with each generation, with 15 percent of Gen Z identifying as bi. It’s hard to put the word “bisexual” in a box. At the most basic level, the folks at the Human Rights Campaign say a bisexual person can find more than one gender attractive. But they also say different bisexual people can describe themselves in different ways. Robyn Ochs, a leading bisexual activist, speaker, and writer, puts it in her own words: > “I call myself bisexual because I acknowledge that I have in myself the > potential to be attracted romantically and/or sexually to people of more than > one sex and/or gender, not necessarily at the same time, not necessarily in > the same way, and not necessarily to the same degree.” Writing for Healthline, Maisha Johnson says some bi folks might be attracted solely to cisgender men and women, while others are attracted to people across the gender spectrum. It also doesn’t denote some fifty-fifty split right down the middle, with some bi people being attracted to one gender more than another. Johnson also drops a few more facts about our bisexual buddies: Bisexual people are still bisexual, even if they’re in a monogamous relationship. Just because a bi guy is dating a gal, it doesn’t suddenly render him straight. There’s no such thing as “picking a side.” Bisexual people can have different kinds of relationships with different genders. That means a person might be romantically interested in multiple genders, but only find one sexually attractive. They can also be asexual or aromantic—but still bi. Bisexuality is not a phase. Many people live their entire lives under the banner of being bi. Others might identify that way for a time and later as something else, but that doesn’t invalidate the orientation as a whole. People can use whatever identifiers they’re comfortable with. Only you can determine your sexual identity. That’s a journey each one of us is on. Watch: In this video, actor Stephanie Beatriz of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Encanto fame dispels some of the rumors surrounding the bisexual community with a healthy dose of humor. Need help with this video? Click Here Take Away: Like everyone else in the LGBTQ+ community, bisexual people are first and foremost just that: people. Each bi person is unique and defines their own interpretation of what it means to be the B. There are some misconceptions about the group, but with a little learning and a lot of love, we can help bisexual people feel accepted for exactly who they are. SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW True or False.
