"FUTURE MANUFACTURING IRELAND: NATIONAL COORDINATION OF ADVANCED MANUFACTURING SUPPORTS" Speaker Bio Synopsis Experienced Technologist focused on strategic management of the National Research & Development ecosystem to support Advanced Manufacturing/Industry 4.0 and digital technology adoption and deployment across the manufacturing sector. Over twenty years’ experience encompassing technology planning, implementation and project management experience within academic and government research groups as well as in the chemical industry and nanotechnology start-up companies. Extensive experience interfacing and liaising within the National R&D ecosystem, Government Agencies and Departments, and with global technology companies as part of joint technical collaboration, strategic funding initiatives, and client relationships. Toby has 17 years’ experience in R&D and management roles in academia, government, and industry. Prior to joining IDA Ireland, he has worked within start-up nanotechnology companies in the UK, Silicon Valley, and Saudi Arabia, the chemical industry in Germany as well as working in and leading research groups in National Laboratories in the US and UK. Ireland’s National Strategy for Industry 4.0 was published in 2020 and set out a clear and ambitious vision statement. Ireland’s vision is that by 2025 it will be a competitive, innovation-driven, manufacturing hub at the frontier of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and at the forefront of Industry 4.0 development and adoption. Ireland intends to develop a global reputation for advanced manufacturing arising from state-funded and industry co-funded research in the country’s R&D Centres. To deliver this vision, The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) has established a new coordination mechanism – ‘Future Manufacturing Ireland (FMI), to ensure coherence and optimal delivery of RD&I supports to the manufacturing sector. This will be achieved through the coordination of resources across publicly funded centres with a dedicated focus on Advanced manufacturing/Industry 4.0, as well as through the support mechanisms from the Enterprise Agencies; IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland. FMI will develop the breadth of capability required across publicly funded research centres in a coherent and coordinated manner and to ensure that this capability if promoted to firms of all sizes. This new coordination mechanism will ensure maximum alignment of activities across the system, avoiding unnecessary duplication and fragmentation of effort. Through a coherent spectrum of supports the FMI mechanism will promote engagement between the network of Advanced Manufacturing centres and the enterprise base. FMI will support the drive to uptake and deploy digital technologies within the manufacturing sector and will ensure its competitiveness and future viability. In this talk, the mission and vision of FMI will be presented. The development of the unit and its remit will be discussed in the context of supporting the manufacturing sector. SÉAMUS CLANCY CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER - REPAK "IS IT BUSINESS AS USUAL OR DO WE ALL AS BUSINESS LEADERS HAVE TO RECALIBRATE OUR THINKING ON WHAT A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS WILL LOOK LIKE IN THE FUTURE." Speaker Bio Séamus Clancy joined Repak Ltd as Chief Executive in April 2014, with over 20 years’ industry experience as a senior executive. A native of Cork, Séamus holds a primary degree in Civil Engineering from UCC and a master’s from the University of Birmingham, UK. Prior to Repak, Séamus was Chief Operating Officer of Environmental Group One51plc., and also held the role of Managing Director of Rilta Environmental Limited and Director of Enterprise at the Rehab Group. Since joining Repak, Seamus has transformed the organisation, growing Membership by over 50% and establishing Repak as a leading environmental organisation and educator on packaging recycling and best practice recycling in Ireland. In 2015, Séamus oversaw the development of Ireland’s new End of Life Tyre compliance scheme, Repak ELT, which recycled 3.8m tyres in 2018, and is now a successful stand-alone organisation effectively managing tyre waste using environmentally responsible solutions, and reducing pollution More recently, Séamus has led the development of a number of new environmental initiatives including the Repak Plastic Packaging Recycling Strategy 2018-2030, the highly successful Repak Members’ Plastic Pledge and the ‘Repak Team Green’ campaign, aimed at encouraging the Irish public to protect the environment, and to reduce, reuse and recycle more and better. GUGLIELMO IOZZIA ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - BUSINESS TECH ANALYSIS, IT AND ANALYTICS - MSD "NOT ONLY DEEP FAKES: DEEP LEARNING GENERATIVE MODELS APPLICATIONS IN PHARMA MANUFACTURING" Speaker Bio Synopsis Guglielmo Iozzia is currently working at MSD, where he is a member of the Merck Manufacturing Division - IT. He is based in Ireland but involved in projects overseas as well. At MSD he is busy leading, executing and delivering ML/AI projects (with focus mostly in Computer Vision, but not restricted to this field anyway) and make sure they generate the expected business value. His journey into Data and ML/AI started more than 8 years ago at IBM and continued at Optum (UnitedHealth Group) before joining MSD in early 2019. He is also an international speaker since 2018: he gave talks about Deep Learning and Computer Vision to more than 40 events, including one edition of the Spark+AI Summit, the Open Data Science Conference, 2 editions of the Big Things Conference, DataWorks Summit and the National Manufacturing and Supply Chain Conference for Ireland and UK. Deep Generative Models are sadly used for Deep Fakes, but that's not the only field of application for such models. There are many other real-life use cases for good in diverse industries. These tasks come with challenges, but there is a great business potential for this family of deep neural networks that just started to be discovered. This talk will walk through a real-life application of Deep Generative Models in pharma manufacturing. MATT MORAN DIRECTOR - BIOPHARMACHEM IRELAND "BIOPHARMA MANUFACTURING SECTOR IN IRELAND – FUTURE CHALLENGES" Speaker Bio Matthew Moran is Director of BioPharmaChem Ireland. He graduated in Chemistry at Trinity College Dublin in 1980 and in Chemical Engineering at University College Dublin in 1981; he holds an MBA also from University College Dublin (Smurfit School of Business). He worked for over ten years in the pharmaceutical industry where he held a number of management positions both in active ingredient and dosage form manufacture. Hayes is an Engineering Technologist within the Dell Technologies Edge Solutions team. Speaker Bio Synopsis Luke co-founded and is Head of Technology & Innovation at DataDyne Consulting, currently operating in Ireland, South America, Asia and the USA. Luke's involvement in the medtech industry is often focussed on digitalisation of processes and companies themselves. With an MSc in Health Informatics from TCD, Luke has established himself as a high level medical IT consultant. Technology has changed how the pharmaceutical industry operates. Pharma and biotech companies can develop life changing treatments quicker and cheaper, often with a higher success rate. JUFAN ZHANG ASSISTANT PROFESSOR/LECTURER - UCD CENTRE OF MICRO / NANO MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY "3D STRUCTURED HOLLOW MICRONEEDLES AND DISSOLVING MICRONEEDLES" Speaker Bio Synopsis Dr Jufan Zhang is the Assistant Professor of UCD, working on the design and manufacturing of innovative medical devices and bioimplants. He has developed featured microneedle devices, including 3D structured polymer hollow microneedle array, solid metal microneedles, dissolving microneedles with modified HA to control the ingredient release speed. Microneedle is a user-friendly solution for transdermal delivery of medicament or cosmetic ingredient, thus has the promising prospect for a variety of applications. Two major bottlenecks identified in this market sector are the applicable drug dosage and cost-effective manufacturing process chain. New designs and manufacturing solutions are proposed by UCD researchers to make significant progress addressing these challenges. JOHN BEHAN HEAD OF SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND COMPUTING - TU DUBLIN "LABORATORY APPRENTICESHIPS - 'EARN AS YOU LEARN'" Speaker Bio Synopsis John Behan Graduated from NUIG with an Honours Degree in Microbiology. He completed a Masters by Research in Industrial Microbiology at UCD. After Graduation, he was recruited to work in the Dublin facility of the Dutch Multinational Healthcare Company Organon Teknika Ltd., initially as Project Scientist, and subsequently was promoted to Head of their Diagnostic Manufacturing Division. His roles included Technology Transfer and responsibility for the overall running of the Department. During this time, he completed the Masters in Business Studies - Manufacturing Management on a part time basis in the world renowned Smurfit Business School in UCD Graduating with Honours. After 5 years in industry, he joined the lecturing staff of the Institute of Technology Tallaght, Science Department, where his responsibilities included industrial liaison, delivery and co-ordination of fulltime and part time programs. In 2007 he was promoted to Head of the Department of Applied Science in the Institute of Technology Tallaght, now the Technological University Dublin, Tallaght Campus. Key roles include overall responsibility for the delivery of full and part time programs, industry training, International Program delivery and Research. In 2019, he was appointed as an Honorary Associated Professor by Nanjing Tech University, Nanjing China as recognition of his leadership role in the delivery of a joint pharmaceutical education programme between the two universities. In early 2021 he was appointed to the role of Head of School of Science and Computing in TU Dublin, Tallaght Campus joining its Senior Management Team. Key recent activities include playing a leadership role in the ongoing transition phase of the organisational design of TU Dublin. The laboratory apprenticeships have been designed by industry, for industry. They are closely aligned with the current needs of the BioPharamChem sector as well as the Medical Devices and Diagnostics, Food and Drink and Independent Testing Laboratory sectors. TU Dublin is the lead academic provider. TIM COMMANE DIRECTOR OF LIFE SCIENCE - IPP GROUP "REGULATORY GUIDANCE ON THE LIFE CYCLE APPROACH TO CONTAINER CLOSURE INTEGRITY TESTING" Speaker Bio Synopsis Tim Commane is the Director of Life Science at IPP Group and has worked in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries for over 15years. Tim has worked with many of the industry's largest manufacturers to help identify, develop and qualify solutions for package inspection. Tim hosts regular seminars at the IPP Group workshops where we create opportunities for learning and discussion amongst stakeholders and global experts on topics such as testing, serialisation, regulatory compliance and automation. This presentation will look at the path of regulatory guidance over the last decade, in the context of container closure integrity inspection for pharmaceutical product packaging and help explain what this means across the manufacturing life-cycle. EAMON JUDGE SENIOR DIRECTOR, GLOBAL ENGINEERING - ELI LILLY "LILLY KINSALE - DELIVERING ON THE PROMISE OF POWER FROM THE SUN." Speaker Bio Synopsis Eamon Judge graduated from University College Dublin with a Bachelor’s degree (Honours) in Chemical Engineering and joined Eli Lilly, Kinsale, Cork , Ireland in 1980. In the 1980s he held various management roles at the site and during the mid 1990s, Eamon relocated to Eli Lilly’s Corporate Headquarters in Indianapolis, US and held several leadership roles in Corporate Strategic Facilities Planning and Technology & Facilities Design. He completed an EMBD at Purdue University Krannert School of Management during this period. In the late 90s , Eamon returned to Ireland and became a Site Senior Leadership Team member as Director of Antibiotic API Production Operations. In the subsequent decade he has held Director level positions in Aseptic Manufacturing , HSE , Manufacturing IT and Automation, Supply Chain Operations and Engineering. In 2016 Eamon moved to an EMEA Project leadership role working for the Global Engineering function and was subsequently responsible for strategic planning for over $1b of capital investments in Europe and Asia. He is currently a Senior Director in Lilly’s Global Engineering Function with global facilities management responsibilities. He has a personal in sustainability and led the development of what is currently Ireland’s largest solar farm : a 26 acre development that supplies Lilly’s Kinsale Manufacturing site with over 8 GWH of power annually equivalent to the carbon sequestration of over 7,000 acres of forestry Eamon represented Eli Lilly for many years on the Council of BioPharmaChem Ireland, the industry association representing the biopharma sector in Ireland. Up to 2021 he was President of the Ireland Affiliate of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) and led the lifesciences COVID Alliance which brought together over 50 organisations to support the HSE and state in responding to Covid. He has been recognised by peers around the world by being awarded the Global Volunteer of the Year award by ISPE in 2020 and in 2021 was d This presentation will track the history of Eli Lilly’s Kinsale manufacturing facility as it has expanded over the past 4 decades and followed a sustainability journey culminating in the recent development of 26 acres of solar generation capacity . This largest ‘behind the meter’ solar development in Ireland is intended as a flag ship example of a mid-scale system which could easily be emulated by other organisations and delivers an annual carbon reduction equivalent to the sequestration of over 7,000 acres of forestry. This capital investment is one of the site’s key decarbonisation steps as Lilly intends becoming globally carbon neutral by 2030. DR BEN RYAN SENIOR LECTURER - RCSI "BSC (ADVANCED THERAPEUTIC TECHNOLOGIES) - DEVELOPING WORKPLACE READY SCIENCE INNOVATORS" Speaker Bio Synopsis Dr Ben Ryan is Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at RCSI and also Head of the Neuropsychoendocrinology Research Group. In 2021 he was appointed as Programme Director of the BSc (Advanced Therapeutic Technologies) degree programme which will intake its first students in September 2022. His research interests focus on depression with a particular emphasis on how endocrinological dysfunction may contribute to treatment resistant depression. In addition, Dr Ryan has published in the areas of cancer and recurrent infection with an emphasis on novel drug delivery systems/therapeutic strategies. Dr Ryan is a Pharmacy graduate of RCSI- University of Medicine and Health Sciences, and also holds a PhD (Neuropharmacology) and BA(Mod) Biochemistry from Trinity College Dublin. The (bio) pharmaceutical and health sector is facing a new era of opportunity as it incorporates healthcare innovations and technologies in areas such as genomics, precision medicines, big data and connected health. With issues of sustainability, an aging population and increasing levels of non-communicable diseases, the rapid acceleration of healthcare-related knowledge which fuses digital technologies with traditional science offers the potential for radical sectoral transformation and enhanced patient outcomes. This has led to an increasing focus on disease prevention and tailored therapies and technologies. Given this, there is a need to reimagine university science education to develop the next generation of scientists capable of innovating and collaborating to deliver novel and transformative therapeutic technologies. It was also reported that FM teams are overwhelmed with data and BMS alarms, - on average a BMS delivers 12.5 alarms every day, with 50% of sites reporting as many as 30 and 27% of respondents admitting to ignoring all BMS alarms. This alarm fatigue leads to inaction, and in CIM’s experience, this leads to critical optimisation opportunities being missed. Overall, alarms are generally not regarded as an aid to better control of a HVAC system or as a means for an organisation to mitigate its energy costs or reduce its CO2 emissions. Rather, alarms are being regarded as a nuisance that can be ignored, ultimately demonstrating that there is insufficient value being delivered by the BMS or the data.
