Close reading is an approach that tries to hear all that a text and its author
intend to communicate. In this verse, Paul’s audience is eager to hear his
message — “This is the Messiah, Jesus” (17:3) — but they want to do their own
close reading of the relevant passages before they accept his novel
interpretation of scripture. "
The practices of close reading can be a powerful way to allow God to “open our
understanding” of scripture in small group Bible study. For more on close

Individual close reading followed by discussion in a small group is an effective
practice to help better understand the Bible. I am privileged to regularly meet
with eager students at home and abroad in close reading of God’s word. We look
for the passage’ s meaning to its original audiences ” back then” and its
significance for us today. Together, we walk a journey of discovery.
As I share this method with church leaders in the majority world, I’d love to
