Sophomores in Honors English are working in groups analyzing Steinbeck’s Of Mice
and Men. They are working to understand and apply the poem that inspired the
novel’s name, looking at characterization, and examining the issue of morality
in the book.

The senior class spent a day at Camp Wartburg for a Leadership Retreat. In
addition to group challenges and team-building, the seniors were challenged to
lead the school using Christian care, encouragement, and confrontation and the
five leadership characteristics: Model the Way, Inspire A Shared Vision,
Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. The sun
was bright and the day hot, but students and leaders had a great day!

You may be familiar with Erica Polk. She was Lutheran North's volleyball coach
last year and is joining us as a middle school teacher this year. Mrs. Polk will
teach math and health and coach volleyball.
She is a graduate of the University of Missouri - St. Louis and worked at
Compton-Drew ILC Middle prior to North. She is married, has two sons, and three
koi fish - Alex, MyLove, and GiGi.
She is looking forward to being able to incorporate God's Word into her lesson
plans and motivating students to reach their greatest potential.

Lutheran North.
First up is Julia Weingart. Mrs. Weingart will be teaching Family and Consumer
Science this year. She graduated from Truman State University and earned her
master's at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. She retired after working at
Pattonville High School for many years and is looking forward to getting back
into the classroom at Lutheran North!

Steve Atwater’s journey to the Pro Football Hall of Fame began with long rides
and short walks, well before starring at Arkansas, joining the Broncos,
delivering a legendary hit on Kansas City running back Christian Okoye, earning
the still-fabulous nickname of “The Smiling Assassin,” making eight Pro Bowls
and winning two Super Bowl rings.
Walk 200 yards from his house. Board the bus on West Florissant Avenue. Get off
at Lucas & Hunt Road. And walk up the street to Lutheran North High School in
St. Louis.
“It seemed like it was 50 miles back then,” Atwater said during an interview
with The Denver Post . “But it was 6-7 miles.”
Six or seven miles but a world away from the environment he was growing up in.
It was a new experience that helped create the foundation for a professional
career that will culminate with his induction in Canton, Ohio. >>

Connie Teaberry-Lindsey, LN '88, competed as a high jumper for the U.S. Olympic
Team in the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. She finished second in the high jump
at the 1996 Olympic Trials and tied for 15th place at the Games.
She was a four-year varsity member of North's track and basketball teams and was
elected most athletic in her class. She attended Kansas State University with a
scholarship in track and field, was a four-time outdoor All-American, and set
the school indoor high jump record.
She was inducted into the Kansas State Athletics Hall of Fame, the St. Louis
Sports Hall of Fame, and the Crusader Hall of Honor. She currently coaches at
Northern Illinois University.

It was a weekend of golf at Lutheran North with the PGA Tour Champions competing
at Norwood Hills Country Club. Alumni and friends got a close-up view of John
Daly and enjoyed cheering on Jack Nicklaus and Ozzie Smith versus Tom Watson and
Craig Berube.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered to direct parking on our campus. The
tournament was a great opportunity for our community and gave us a chance to

David Schoedel is joining us on campus this year as a theology teacher and
assistant athletic director. Mr. Schoedel previously worked at Immanuel Lutheran
School in St. Charles. He is looking forward to working alongside his son, Adam

he enjoys playing games, building things, and spending time with his three

There are different faces in different places at Lutheran North, but the mission
remains the same. After winning four consecutive district championships and
making four deep playoff runs, the experienced Crusaders understand there are no

It's game week!
Tickets to Friday night’s football game against St. Mary’s are limited. Varsity
football players and cheerleaders have two reserved tickets available for
purchase in the office. The remaining tickets are available
first-come-first-serve. Tickets also can be purchased at St. Mary's on Tuesday,
Wednesday or Thursday from 5 - 8 p.m. in their gym. Tickets will not be sold at
the gate.

Caldra Williford, the No. 9 recruit on the Post-Dispatch Super 30 countdown, was
outstanding his sophomore season as Lutheran North rolled to the 2019 Class 2
state championship. He made 43 tackles and hauled in five interceptions.
Williford will be critical if the Crusaders are going to make another lengthy
playoff push.
“Caldra is an explosive athlete and a lockdown corner. He can lock down one side
of the field and he can also play safety,” coach Kyle Wagner said. “He’s a ball
hawk, he can tackle in the open field. He’s just a good all-around player. Any

After working with kindergarteners last year, Maryclaire McCabe is looking
forward to working with teenagers as Lutheran North's new art teacher.
She attended Missouri State University and works at Craft Alliance in the summer
teaching classes about glass mosaic, printmaking, sewing, fiber, and kinetic
arts.
She has a cat named Frances and enjoys spending time with family, crocheting,
thrifting and trying out new restaurants. She is looking forward to sharing her
love for art with everyone at North.

Ronnie Perkins, LN '18, officially signed his contract with the New England
Patriots! Perkins was selected by the Patriots in the third round of the 2021
NFL Draft. The 6-foot-3, 253-pound linebacker played for the University of
Oklahoma, finishing his college career with 99 total tackles, 16 ½ sacks and two

putting George Milton on trial for the murder of his friend, Lennie Smalls.
Students used what they had learned from reading to act as judge, jury, lawyers,

Introducing Joel Young, our new middle school teacher...
Mr. Young has been teaching for the past 16 years. He has tribal status with the
Lac Du Flambeau Tribe of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in Northern Wisconsin
and loves canoeing, old movies, and Cajun gumbo. He is an expert at grilling
bratwurst, a novice at chess, and a former swim coach.
He has lived in Wisconsin, Missouri, North Carolina, Ethiopia, and Kenya, where
he worked with short-term mission teams for five years, doing acts of service
and teaching at East African seminaries.
He loves teaching World Geography and United States History and is very excited
to be at Lutheran North where conversations about the Lord are expected in all
areas of the curriculum.

A half-century after he lost his class ring, Lutheran High School grad Paul Koch
got it back.
“I remember how proud I was as a senior at Lutheran High School Central when I

Jared Deken joins us from Trinity Catholic High School, where he taught for
several years. Mr. Deken is teaching math at Lutheran North. He attended Central
Methodist University and is married with two little boys, and a dog that loves
to hide from them.

Students in Honors Geometry started off the year in a yummy fashion. Using
graham crackers and pull n' peel licorice, among other items, they spent their
class modeling foundational Geometry terms and postulates that form the basis
for their Euclidean deductive system. Math, food, and fun - it can't get much
better than that!

Lutheran North has become known as one of the top small-school athletic programs
in Missouri. We have won 120+ individual and team District Championships.
Fourteen Lutheran North teams have won State Championships. Several other teams
in tennis, baseball, track, football, and basketball have finished in the Final

As Lutheran North basketball transitions to new leadership, we're thrilled to
announce Brandon Jackson will remain as the girls' varsity assistant coach.
Jackson has been a part of the North program for the past three years as an
assistant girls coach and middle school coach. He was a part of the coaching
team that took the girls team to the state finals in 2019.
