That's leaving a lot of even quite big clients feeling like they're not very big anymore or not not as big as their service providers. So it's much harder for them as a client to be the jewel in the crown of somebody's business model. If you are the sort of client that might have been considered an important ‘trophy client’ in the past, it's really hard now even to get onto their radar. I won’t mention any names but I’ve spoken with a few big organisations recently and they’re feeling that with the large service providers they’re not being considered as a significant contract. One client hadn’t even heard from their contract manager in the last four months despite running the headquarters of a prestigious, global company. The medium-sized providers coming up in the ranks have an open goal to shoot at because they've got a shorter chain of command. When there's a pitch, they send in senior people. When there's a problem, they send in senior people. I don’t believe these big providers are worried about losing contracts because there are a lot more contracts to be won. They might be more worried about losing talent because if I was mentoring somebody and they said they wanted to build that career quickly, I might say, ‘Start in a big company to learn the ropes. Step out into a medium-sized company to develop yourself.’ INNOVATIVE LEADERS One of the things that is common across these kinds of more innovative, bolder companies – look at James Bradley at Churchill, Matt Chapman at SBFM, Andrew Hulbert at Pareto, they're young guys. They've already got on fast and they've got on faster than some of the people in some of the bigger organisations because they don't have as many layers of the onion to work their way through. These fast-growing, disruptive companies are going to become acquisition targets for the big companies because the best way to take them out of the competition is to swallow them. If you eat them, they are gone from the market. Obviously some of these companies are also showing themselves off for sale, and who wouldn't? Some will just get swallowed by bigger companies, which can sometimes work really well, like Norland’s Managed Services as part of CBRE. * SMEs disrupting the #FacMan market – Matt Chapman, chief executive officer, at SBFM * SMEs disrupting the #FacMan market – Andrew Hulbert, vice-chair at Pareto FM * SMEs disrupting the #FacMan market – Steve McGregor, MD at DMA Group Mergers and acquisitions are a bit like a mushroom cloud: all the big companies have become bigger and created this massive vacuum underneath and that’s where there’s a missing layer of companies on the next level. So those disruptive companies will become the medium level and occupy the space similar to what Norland’s once did.
