Morocco is a land of wonders, with unique heritage and cultural treasures found
throughout the length and breadth of the country. Ranked as one of the top
destinations to visit in 2024 by CNN Travel, the country attracts travellers
seeking wide open spaces and ancient stone ruins both. Here are nine sites
listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Travelling to Morocco? Here are some articles to help you plan out your trip:

 * Marrakesh: 7 places you need to visit in the city
 * The most beautiful place to discover in Morocco
 * What is the best time of the year to go to Morocco?

THE FEZ MEDINA

Founded in the 12th century, the medina of Fez is the oldest fortified quarter
in Morocco. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, it is a veritable
labyrinth of narrow streets. The architecture of the medina is incredibly rich:
medersas (Koranic schools), over 300 mosques, palaces, fountains, etc. A
particular point of interest is Bab Bou-Jeloud, a monumental gateway decorated
with blue and green earthenware opening onto the medina.

THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF VOLUBILIS

Founded in the 3rd century BC, Volubilis was the former capital of the kingdom
of Mauritania (a Roman province at the time). The city was home to sumptuous
monuments, of which only remains and ruins remain today. Nearby, at Moulay
Idriss Zerhoun, you can find the tomb of Idris I, founder of the dynasty of the
same name and a spiritual landmark for Moroccans.

Founded in the 11th century by the Almoravid dynasty, the medina of Marrakech
covers 600 hectares. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, it is
the Mecca of tourism in the ochre city, home to monuments, mosques and the
inevitable souks,. Like the other medinas, its fortifications are accessed
through seven monumental gates.

THE HISTORIC CITY OF MEKNES

This medina, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, was founded in
the 11th century by the Almoravids. Nicknamed the “city of a hundred minarets”
because of the large number of mosques within, the medina stands out for its
imposing walls with nine gates. Inside are palaces, granaries, mosques and much
more.

THE MEDINA OF TÉTOUAN

At the northern tip of Morocco, Tétouan features characteristic Arab-Andalusian
architecture. Its medina reflects the Spanish influence in the region. Built on
the slopes of Djébel Dersa, it is one of the smallest medinas in the kingdom
(the surrounding walls measure 5 km).

THE KSAR OF AIT BENHADDOU

At the gates of Ouarzazate, the Ksar of Ait Benhaddou is an earthen brick
fortress, typical of southern constructions. The word ksar means “castle” in
Arabic… Built on a foothill, this 11th-century fortress has been used as a
backdrop for many films, such as Indiana Jones and Gladiator. It became a UNESCO
World Heritage Site in 1987.

The medina of Essaouira (formerly Mogador), built in the mid-18th century, is
one of the most picturesque in Morocco, being located just a few metres from the
ocean. Its fortifications bear a distinct Portuguese influence found throughout
the region (Vauban architecture). For several centuries, the port of Essaouira
played a strategic role in international and sub-Saharan trade.

THE PORTUGUESE TOWN OF MAZAGAN (EL JADIDA)

Mazagan, now known as El Jadida, which means “the new one,” is a fortified city
built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. Its fortification style, with
bastions and ramparts, is typical of Renaissance military works.

In Morocco, the entire city of Rabat (the capital) is classified as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. It is home to many exceptional historic sites, including
the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Chellah Necropolis, the Hassan Tower rising above
an incomplete mosque, and the Mohammed V Mausoleum.
