DAN TAYLOR sat at his computer monitor, running the scene backward and forward,
backward and forward. ''This is one of our new creatures for this movie,'' he
said, as a 65-foot-tall spinosaurus turned, leapt forward and gobbled up a
screaming actor. ''So this one, obviously, we built from scratch for this movie.
Notice the movement of the muscles under the skin.''

Mr. Taylor is animation supervisor on ''Jurassic Park III,'' one of more than a
dozen sequels, remakes or spinoffs scheduled to be released this summer by the
Hollywood studios. It is a bumper crop of risk-averse imitation that many feel
is the inevitable result of the increasingly buttoned-down, bottom-line
mentality that has taken hold in the movie industry in recent years.

''You've got to make it better somehow,'' Mr. Taylor said. ''In the last movie,
in 1997, there were 65 visual effects shots, 50 or so of them involving
dinosaurs. In this one, there are 170 dinosaur shots alone.''

A correction was made on
May 20, 2001
:

An article last Sunday about movie sequels and remakes scheduled for release
this summer misidentified the director of the original ''Rollerball.'' He was
Norman Jewison, not John Boorman.
